Avifile

Avifile is a library that allows you to read and write compressed AVI files in most common video & audio formats (Indeo® Video, DivX, etc.) under x86 Linux. Compression and decompression are performed with Win32 DLLs. It includes a simple AVI player and a Video4Linux capture program. Currently it is under heavy development, and while some features (such as AVI playback) already work, some (audio compression) are not yet successfully implemented.

FLAC

FLAC is a Free Lossless Audio Codec. The FLAC format supports streaming, seeking, and archival, and gives 25-75% compression on typical CD audio. Input plugins for Winamp and XMMS are also provided.

GLAME

GLAME (GNU/Linux Audio Mechanics) is meant to be the GIMP of audio processing. It is designed to be a powerful, fast, stable, and easily extensible sound editor for Linux and compatible systems. Supported platforms are Linux, BSD, and IRIX. You need to have guile and libxml installed to use GLAME, having GNOME libs available is highly recommended.

GlobeCom

The GlobeCom Jukebox is a music jukebox with integrated CDDB-aware ripping and groupware functionality. It is completely configurable from the Web interface, seamlessly integrates ripping from CD to encoded MP3, and supports grouping of songs, peak adjustment, account management for access, streaming of jukebox or single song, themability, album handling, and online help.

MAD

MAD is a high-quality MPEG audio decoder capable of 24-bit output. All computations are performed with fixed-point integer arithmetic, making it ideal for systems without a floating-point unit. The implementation is entirely new, based on the ISO/IEC standards. The code consists of a decoding library (libmad), an ID3 tag manipulation library (libid3tag), a command-line front-end (madplay), and a plug-in for Winamp.

Rosegarden

Rosegarden is an integrated MIDI sequencer and musical notation editor. There are two branches. The Rosegarden-2.1 branch is very old but usable and well-featured, while the Rosegarden-4 branch is a wholly new development that currently supports only a very few features and is recommended for keen developers only.

Smurf

Smurf is a GTK-based sound font editor. Sound font files are a collection of audio samples and other data that describe instruments for the purpose of composing music. Sound fonts do not describe the music itself, but rather the sounds of the instruments. These instruments can be composed of any digitally recordable or generated sound. This format provides a portable and flexible sound synthesis environment that can be supported in hardware or software.

SpiralSynthModular

SpiralSynth Modular (SSM) is a fully-featured, modular soft-synth. You can build your own synth designs from module plugins. It can be used to mix together tracks constructed with samples and synth patches (sequenced via MIDI, or built-in sequencer plugins). Create your own pipeline of control voltages (CVs) and audio data to design your own sounds with huge flexibility. SSM makes no distinction between how you use the data; any output can be plugged into any input, and an oscillator may be used to generate audio data or to modulate the cutoff of a filter as CV data.

Umix

Umix is an advanced program for adjusting soundcard volumes and other features in soundcard mixers. You can control your volumes, balances and recording sources flexibly from the command line or with a fullscreen interactive user interface. Settings can be saved and loaded from a file. Umix supports multiple mixer devices and all mixer drivers and UIs are dynamically loaded at runtime.

Voxpak

Voxpak is a GUI for playing, editing, renaming, etc. voice and fax messages. It includes scripts for popping up sticky-notes or requesters with caller ID info, renaming voice messages to date+callerid, using Python and wxwindows, and a good start on a prefs program. A small Kaptain script is available as an alternative to installing wxwindows.
