Along with the regular monthly magazine, the Linux Format team also produces one-off special editions
focusing on a particular subject. Most recently we had Get started with Mandriva Linux, a full
guide to installing, configuring and using one of the friendliest distros around. Supplied in a bag
along with four Mandriva CDs, the guide took users from complete newcomers to familiar Linuxers.
Our second Special magazine, covering Fedora Core, is now on sale in WH Smith stores.
You can read more about the first Special below, and then see what's to come...
Our latest Special introduces Fedora Core, the Red Hat sponsored distro that combines
the newest software with a lively and helpful community. Like the Mandriva edition, this
magazine steps through installation, configuration and usage, taking you from the first
CD to using Linux in-depth.
- Includes Fedora Core 4 on CDs
- Step-by-step install guide
- Focuses on Gnome and supporting apps
Our beginner's guide, at the start of the magazine, explains what Linux is,
why it's growing so rapidly, and what it can
do for you. Then follows an eight page installation guide, with screenshots and tips
for every step of the way - there's no easier way to get started.
Once you're up and running with Linux, our guides on using the desktop software will
help you make the most of your new software. We have guides on web browsing with Firefox,
using OpenOffice.org, editing images in The GIMP, playing multimedia files, desktop
publishing, and more.
More advanced topics are also covered such as setting up a web server, using the
command line, setting up CD burning software and getting into programming.
If you're new to Linux, it's an ideal way to learn all about the OS via hands-on guides
and tutorials. The Fedora Core Special is available exclusively in WH Smiths shops.
