Linux Registration
Since Linux may be freely copied, it's difficult to know exactly how many Linux users
there are. Possible ways of estimating the number of Linux users include counting the
number of official distributions sold, and surveying the readers of computing magazines.
Another way is to ask users to register their use of Linux with a central site. For
Linux, the central site is the Linux Counter.
There's no
fee for registering your usage, and it's not compulsory, but doing so increases the
visible use of Linux, and encourages more applications to be written for or ported to
Linux.
A more direct advantage of registering your Linux use is that you get a pretty user
certificate such as the one shown.
Linux® is a registered
trademark of Linus Torvalds.
