Distros
Small Linux is a very versatile 50MB mini desktop oriented Linux distribution. See the Live CD roundup in the mag for more info, and burn and boot the CD-R ISO provided here to test it.

Fedora is a cutting-edge Live distro, as described in this month's roundup. You can try it out by booting your PC from this DVD and selecting it from the boot menu. See page 78 for more information on booting.

Gentoo Linux is arguably the most powerful and configurable distro around. It's geared towards advanced Linux users, and uses a software distribution system called Portage that compiles programs from source. This lets you optimise and customise programs your your PC. You can boot Gentoo in Live mode from this DVD, and then install it by following the guide in the magazine. After installation, see handbook.html provided here for info on using the distro - skip to the 'Working with Gentoo' section. (The installation guide in the handbook is for manual installations, which you don't need to do.)

Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating system with a modular approach and outstanding design. Despite its small size, Slax provides a wide collection of pre-installed software for daily use, including a well organized graphical user interface and useful recovery tools for system administrators.
