Contents of Distros

Debian GNU/Linux is one of the most respected and long-running Linux distributions, favoured by power-users, developers and system administrators. Although it doesn't always include the latest software, it has a strong reputation for stability and good uptimes. We've provided two CD images - one includes the KDE desktop, another includes Xfce - which you can burn to a CD-R and boot from (or install in VirtualBox). See the magazine for more information.

Mandriva Linux, well known for being one of the most user-friendly distros around, has fantastic configuration tools and a great selection of default software. This is Mandriva One 2008, which runs from the DVD in Live mode, and you can find out more in the DVD pages of the mag.

Created by Warren Woodford, SimplyMepis is a user-friendly desktop distro based on Debian. It runs in Live mode, so you can try Linux without installing, and it can also be installed to your hard drive. Features KDE as the default desktop environment. Mepis is supplied as a CD ISO image, which you can burn to a CD-R or use in VirtualBox.

OpenSUSE is one of the longest-running Linux distros, having started development in 1992 under the name SUSE Linux. Novell later bought SUSE, adding lashings of enterprise polish to the distro, thereby making it a solid choice for desktops and servers. Ubuntu is currently the most popular Linux distribution in the world, with masses of packages (based on the Debian repositories) and a lively userbase. Ubuntu has a fast installation process but also runs in Live mode, so you can try it straight from this DVD. It doesn't intend to smother you in a billion software choices out-the-box - instead giving you a subset of the very best Linux software. Boot from this DVD to run it.
