While GNOME offers a nice graphical desktop that you'll probably want to spend most of your time in, you can also use Unix/Linux commands if you are accustomed to that (or wish to learn).

GNOME provides a sophisticated terminal window called the "Gnome terminal". Choose Main Menu > Terminals > Gnome terminal to start it.

This may be something you want on your panel!
