EST'S LINUX TAPE DEVICE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM ENDORSED BY MAJOR TAPE DRIVE MANUFACTURERS
Industry Leading Companies Receive Compatibility Certificate at LinuxWorld Expo

Phoenix, AZ - February 8, 2000 - Enhanced Software Technologies, Inc., the leader in Linux-based backup and restore software, presented leading computer industry tape drive manufacturers (listing follows) with their Linux Tape Device Certification award certificate last week at LinuxWorld Expo in New York. The certification program, developed and maintained by EST, is supported by Linux inventor Linus Torvalds and Linux International.

EST recently launched its new linuxtapecert.org Web site that lists Linux-compatible tape devices by manufacturer and model. The new site is the outgrowth of the Linux Tape Device Certification Program, developed and administered by EST to test and certify tape drive manufacturer's devices under the Linux operating system. EST developed and maintains the site as a service and resource to Linux users needing accurate and up-to-date information to assist their tape device purchasing decisions.

"It's great to see companies like EST assume an important leadership role and responsibility for making Linux-based applications and Linux-compatible devices more accessible to users," noted Linus Torvalds, inventor of the Linux operating system. "Their objectivity and technical expertise gives them great credibility within the industry to successfully manage and promote this program."

"EST is providing a valuable service to the Linux community by creating the tape certification program," said Jon "maddog" Hall, executive director of Linux International. "Their position as Linux backup experts gives them great insight in answering the question: What tape drives work with Linux? This is the program's benefit to Linux users."

"As the first company to deliver a commercial Linux backup product, EST believed early on that Linux would become the phenomena that it has," said Ted Cook, president and CEO of EST. "We're proud to offer this certification program to make purchasing decisions easier for users and also to give them more choices by working closely with tape drive manufacturers to help develop Linux-compatible drivers."

Companies with Linux Certified Tape Devices

  • Benchmark Tape Systems Corporation - Boulder, Colorado
  • Ecrix Corporation - Boulder, Colorado
  • Exabyte Corporation - Boulder, Colorado
  • Hewlett-Packard Company - Palo Alto, California
  • OnStream, Inc. - Longmont, Colorado
  • Tandberg Data ASA - Oslo, Norway
  • Tecmar Technologies, Inc. - Longmont, Colorado

"EST's efforts in providing the connection between OnStream and the appropriate members of the Linux development community have been instrumental in ensuring compatibility between OnStream's drives and the Linux operating environment," said Jim Jonez, director of product marketing, OnStream, Inc. "We appreciate all the hard work and look forward to a continuing and successful relationship."

Driver Development & On-Going Program Support - EST will work closely with the drive manufacturers and the Linux developer community to ensure that any modifications required for device compatibility are implemented successfully. Any resulting changes or new device drivers will be provided back to the Linux community under an Open Source License, such as the GPL.

Linux Compatible for Backup Logo - this new logo will be provided for use by the manufacturer in their marketing documents, packaging, and internet sites. It will provide a marketing benefit for the device manufacturers by showing their support for Linux and also provide peace of mind for consumers, ensuring that the devices they purchase will function properly under Linux.

On-Line Certification Site - As part of the certification process, EST maintains the program site at http://www.linuxtapecert.org where the test result of various manufacturers drives and models are posted. The test scripts are also available for download by end-users to allow testing of their existing tape drives for Linux compatibility. See the above site for specific details on tape devices and models.
