>Err... In the UK it IS mandatory for all packet stations to use CW ID!
>Some people ignore this, but it's in the license. I think you may use voice
>ident as an alternative to CW, but no-one would dream of that.

Smells British to me, I think anyone who uses CW ID and Beacons on a data
network should be shot. You know it's wrong, the government knows it's wrong,
but you persist anyway. I think the British model is so foreign to most
Americans because we don't put up with that kind of bull. Like the 55 mph
speed law; we vote with our actions and the government finally gets tired of
enforcing worthless or dumb laws.

Here in Oklahoma we have several people who CW ID because their TNC has that
feature. No other reason, they like to see everyone get pissed and leave the
hobby. But this is the state where they have people in prison for failure to
return their video rental on time (Felony!), and release rapists because the
DA lawyers didn't get their case ready in time. So brain damage is pretty
common around here.

What's the name and call of the US ham that suggested this? I think he
probably is one of those people who start a voice simplex net on 145.02 and
can't figure out why he's being interfered with, and probably needs some
mail and cow dung delivered, he's probably an Extra Class Okie . . .

You can easily identify packet interference without CW ID, it would entail
spending a couple bucks and buying a used TNC, however most Official Observers
of the ARRL, or other national leagues should be able to afford this.

Sounds like the turkeys around here who use 300bps on a busy channel,
"because they're allowed to."

Hello Jeff,
Here in UK it IS Manditory for either a CW ident or voice identification of
the transmitting data station to be transmitted at least every 30 minutes.

It is a bone that sticks in our throat, but is a legal requirement.so we do it!

We are required to put a hardware cwid on all our modes and speeds above 1200
baud.Scramblers etc. make it difficult for software generation.Below that you
can generate cwident in software with typically g8bpq John Wiseman's KISS eprom
with cwid is for genuine tnc2 clones.I understand the eprom in Kams can generate
a cwident whilst in kiss mode, but I have not used one to test .

I can only suggest you lobby the appropriate body/bodies to ensure you do not
get this millstone imposed upon you EVER!!

The reason the original TNC's in the US had the CWID command was because it
used to be a legal requirement on Data/ATV/SSTV/Etc. transmissions that a CW or
VOICE ID needed to be made during a QSO ... The FCC finally dropped the
requirement when they got their own TNCs, TVs, etc.

Without commenting on the merits (in the hope that this whole issue
just dies down as it should), I do want to correct the record on
W0RLI. His software was originally written for the Xerox 820, which
was a CP/M machine that someone (K8MMO?) managed to get a carload of
released into the hands of ham radio operators. The W0RLI user
interface and many other features were acknowledged to be common
in twisted pair BBS of the day, most noticeably in R-CP/M. While
the IBM PC had been out for some years by the time packet radio
came about, it was far too expensive for ham shack use. Also, the
landline modem of the time was often 300 or 1200 bps, so there was
a natural tendency to use a similar interface style for both packet
and landline BBSs.

The reason that W0RLI probably never gave recognition to the people
mentioned is that it would have been thoroughly obvious to anyone
at that time, much like Hayes giving credit to Alexander Graham Bell
for their use of the ATDT command.

I truly wish I could address to all involved but, I value my access to this
group and have NO other access besides via RF. I also have forwarded this to
the gateway sysop for him to manually forward it.

Fred....Take NO offence:-}. The current laws in this country disallow me
to talk directly to a 3rd party without another control operator. So I guess
it would be against current regulations to send anything directly to ya
wether or not a "hackers network".

Until there is some type of change in regulation here, I'll walk in thin
ice out of respect for my gateway's license...not necessarily mine!

My vote? A way I can access .ampr.org via RF without fear of regulations.
Any sugestions?

A number of people expressed interest in a SunOS 4.X AX25 driver. I
uploaded sunax25-1.2.tar.[Z,gz] to ucsd.edu in the /hamradio/packet/tcpip/
incoming directory earlier this week. It contains an updated kernel
driver which includes a number of fixes. Version 1.1 of the driver
was released (sort of) by the author, though it appears never to have
made it to ucsd.edu. I am calling this release 1.2 because it is
based on the 1.1 release which contains a fix for a kernel memory
leak. Please direct any comments or suggestions to me.

Ok, that's easy. I just did a 'grep opyrigh *' in the source directory of the
latest KA9Q snapshot of RCS files... here it is, for the grep-impaired. I
suggest that anyone using the code take a minute to peruse a few copyright
notices. It's not hard to do, and hopefully it will calibrate your
expectations. To my knowledge, the overall copyright schema has remained
unchanged since the original tcp-group formation after the MAPRC meeting in
Harrisonburg, PA, at which KA9Q, K3MC, N3CVL, , and I sat up all night and
agreed to go work on what eventually became known as NET, and later NOS...
