Subject: cutdown NOS again
To: tcp-group@ucsd.edu

Hi again,
I have had a few encouraging replies re the above.
In particular I have been pointed to the original
ka9q net code, which I'm told is pretty cutdown already
(compared to JNOS say).
Is there *anything* at all that can be cut out of this?
I'm thinking of a version that handles
a) only a PC
b) only ax25 attaches
c) only one type of session for each protocol.
d) trace
e) thats about it.

Any opinions/pointers appreciated.
Thanks

I have seen reference to wg7j 1.10 bits? I cannot find them on UCSD.
anybody have an idea where they might be?

Bob,
The 110x8 version of JNOS can be found on wg7j.ece.orst.edu, in the
beta dir... This is going to be the 1.10 JNOS version, but right now
it's in Beta Test. One REALLY nice feature is the Indexing of Message
Areas. Going in and out of a message area is really quick. It uses an
Index file instead of the actual message area. This saves disk space,
I/O and response time. This has caused lots of bugs however, but they
are gradually being worked out. Lots of different parts of NOS touch
the message areas. Making sure that they all work with the new Index
file has kept Johan pretty busy. He's been doing an great job. Check
out the NOS-BBS-GROUP list for more info on problems and new features
with the 110xX code.

The 1.10 stuff is beta and is on wg7j.ece.orst.edu plus a few
other places where people have copied them. I expect that Johan
will put the released version on ucsd.edu when it is ready, which
should be pretty soon.

Subject: OS/2 NOS Mailer with Source wanted
To: <TCP-Group@UCSD.Edu>

Has anyone seen an OS/2 based NOS Mailer ( NNTP would also be nice )
program with source? What about a non-NOS, stand alone, program that
could be adapted to use the NOS file structure. PM EUI would be nice,
but text based will work too. Thanks.

FYI:

I've been running JNOS in a OS/2 v2.1, 735K Dos Box for the last 2
weeks or so. So far, no major problems. So far, I've got the nos.bat
file calling an OS/2, REXX Command file that makes sure that the log
is less than 500,000 records. If it's over 500,000 records, it pkzips
the nos.log file into another directory.
I've also got a couple of OS/2 Rexx command files that look for data
in the spool\mail file. If a note gets sent to the printer area,(
printer.txt ) the smtp headers are striped and it is sent to the
printer. I'm also going to set up a callbook and mods server. No code
will need to be added to NOS. Just a couple of Rexx files to wait for
stuff to show up, process them, and then erase them.

You can probably use PMAIL, the mailer from PMNOS.

Why not just use PMNOS? It's native OS/2 so if you need to hit a
serial port, you don't hit the DOSbox interrupt problem.

Would some kind soul e-mail a brief overview of the NOS family to the
tcp group? It need only include the following information:

- Name
- platforms it runs on
- platform specific caveats
- networking services available
- strengths
- weaknesses
- who is developing it (or where)

Thanks....

I am running a DE100 in my machine. The DEPCA.COM driver works as long
as you have the card in 64K mode. 32K mode doesn't work for me for some
reason. Another fellow said it worked for him. Guess I have a strange
machine.

I got a copy of DLLPKT (from ucsd.edu I think) which lets you run NOS
on top of Pathworks. It's much nicer than rebooting every time I want
to FTP something.

Good luck!

Swinging to the hardware side for a moment...

I've recently been experimenting with 2 meter FM 9600 (have a
lot of experiance with a Tekk on 440) and am amazed at how
poorly it performs. I modified an ICOM 228A both to keep the
receiver on all the time (it shuts it off during transmit as
designed) and the normal VCO and Discriminator taps. After
discussing it, I'm pretty much convinced that the final IF
filter is the culprit. I'm using a PacComm TNC which has a
5 kHz cut-off on its input filter.

My theory is that 4800 Hz is the highest modulating frequency,
so the modulation index at 3 kHz deviation would be .625. Using
a Bessel chart shows +/- 3 sidebands for (6 x 4800) 28.8 kHz
Bandwidth. I assume the FIR filter on transmit greatly
attenuates the third sideband so we probably only need (4 x
4800) or 19.2 kHz.

The trouble is my ICOM (and most other rigs) has a 455 kHz filter
marked with an 'E'. PacComm says an 'E' is 15 kHz and a 'D' is
20 kHz. I'm not sure what the 10.7 MHz IF has in it. What's the
general consensus on this? Do those running 9600 sucessfully change
these out, or is my math all wrong?

Subject: WNOS Autoexec.nos
To: TCP-GROUP@ucsd.edu, packet-radio@ucsd.edu

I am trying to get WNOS4a8 going on a NEC Powermate with 2M of memory. I used
to run an older version of NET and decided I would try out the newer stuff. I
tried what a lot of people do and that is using my old Autoexec.net file in
place of the Autoexec.nos file. After reading the documentation I went back and
tried the Autoexec.nos file that came with the WNOS4a8 file that is on
ucsd.edu. It is configured for Europe and tried to use the documentation to
comment out what is not appropriate for my configuration and select what is. I
ran NET on a KISS PK88 TNC and it worked fine. Does someone out there have some
inkling of why I get a scrolling screen full of STACKViolations when running
with the Autoexec.nos file and merely a missing Autoexec.nos error message when
I run without? It seems to me it is something I have selected in the .NOS file
and I suppose without posting what my file contains it will be fairly difficult
for you to know what exactly it is ;-)

I'm just after general guidance. What other people have found as causing this
problem. I'm a newbie at this so this should be a nice break from some of the
indepth conversations I've seen going on here.

As a side question, I sup[pose that once I do get this working I need to become
a part of the system to be able to use NNTP?

Thanks folks
