Meteor 3-3 approaches morning terminator, APT is off. Meteor 2-21 too orbits around the day/night-boundary, but Mike Kenny (Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne, Australia) received APT on DEC 08. Meteor 3-5 transmits good vis-APT from noon-ascending passes, but still uses 20 lpm-format for IR-imaging from dark parts of the orbit (channel-switching occures at 65 deg NLat now). +------------------------------------------+ |Peter Henne (peter.henne@gmd.de) | | (henne@gmd.de) | |German Nat.Research Center.f.Comp.Science | |D-5205 St.AUGUSTIN 1 | |Fed.Rep. of Germany | +------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: 13 Dec 93 16:26:14 GMT From: ogicse!hp-cv!sdd.hp.com!col.hp.com!news.dtc.hp.com!hpscit.sc.hp.com!billg@network.ucsd.edu Subject: DOVE Transmitting? To: ham-space@ucsd.edu I've been away from amateur radio awhile as my HT batteries died and I never replaced them. What I want to know is, is the DOVE microsat still transmitting? Did they ever get the voice portion of the transmission working? At what time does it pass near enough to the San Francisco bay area for me to hear it? I've been listening for it for several days now for hours at a time at random portions of the day and have heard nothing. I have not been monitoring in the middle of the night however. Are there any gaps yet in the bandwidth? Whom should he : ask to? Federal Communication Commission? Any information would be appreciated. No such luck, Mike. There are some upcoming initiatives before the FCC regarding spectrum expansion for wireless LAN networks, PCS, and digital messaging, etc., but nothing that's available for the public. Any new spectrum allocation will almost certainly br accompanied by a license lottery, for which the applicant must post significant bond as proof of his/her ability to build a system. SMR, which was more akin to the older style 'mobile operator' phone system has undergone significant chages in the last few years, and is very cellular-like, although you don't really use cells, and roaming options are quite limited. SMR operators are employing these systems on the existing SMR spectrum. PCS is also getting a lot of attention, but the existing cellular carriers are making great strides at providing these services given their existing equipment. I would say your friend's cash is a lot safer in the bank than it is trying to create a new communications competitor. You're better off investing in one of the existing options- getting new spectrum for your own project would cost millions and require at least 5 years of paperwork. Just a quick question. I'm have been tracking amateur satellites for about a year or so, listening to SAREX and the like with the shuttle, listening to beacons on other birds. I'm interested in doing a little QSO work with these birds, but I can't seem to locate a book or anything with all the frequencies and information on the basics. Can anyone suggest a file to FTP or book to get that would explain much of it to me? Thanks in advance...
