Announcement - ARRL Information Email Server (info@arrl.org)

The services that the ARRL provides via the internet include the
Email Information Server and the Technical Information Service.
The Information Server is an automated mail server that gives you
access to many of information files relating to various facets of
Amateur Radio. You can retrieve any or all of these files by
sending an email message to info@arrl.org here at ARRL HQ.
Each file you request is then mailed to you automatically.

To use it, mail messages to:

   info@arrl.org

Each line of the message body should contain a command as shown below.
The subject of your message is not processed and may be omitted. You
may place as many commands in a message as you want. The files you
request will be sent to you in separate messages. Only ASCII text
files are supported.

Valid INFO commands:

reply <address> (may be needed - see below for explanation)
help
index
send FILENAME (example: send prospect.txt)
quit

In the above message example, "help" retrieves a brief set of
instructions for info, "index" retrieves a list of available files
and "prospect.txt" retrieves a text file containing information on
becoming a radio amateur.

Note to users with FTP capability: All of these files are also
available by anonymous ftp to ftp.std.com in the
/pub/hamradio/ARRL/Server-files/info area.

If you want to retrieve several text files with one message, use a
separate line for each "send filename" request.

Your From: field or Reply-to: field in your header should contain a
valid Internet address, including full domain name. If your From:
field does not contain a valid Internet address, the answer will not
reach you. If this is the case, then use the reply command as shown
above. When needed, this command should always be the first command
in your message.

IMPORTANT: Please use the quit command in your message. This will
prevent processing errors from message signatures.

PLEASE NOTE!: This is an automated system not capable of handling
written requests. Any questions on the info-server or the content
of any of its files should be directed to mtracy@arrl.org.

ALSO NOTE!: Do *NOT* reply to messages sent from info@arrl.org - the
reply address is redirected to keep bounced messages from endlessly
looping. Write a new message to info@arrl.org instead.

The Technical Information Service gives League members on the
internet better access to the knowledgeable technical staff here
at ARRL HQ. Questions relating to Amateur Radio and related
technical topics are welcome. To use this service, send a normal
e-mail message to tis@arrl.org with your question spelled out in
plain english. For best service, be as specific as possible and
keep your line length in messages to a maximum of 80 characters.
Due to personnel limitations, priority will be given to questions
from League members.

Best Regards,

Michael Tracy, KC1SX, ARRL Technical Information Services Coordinator
(e-mail mtracy@arrl.org)

Subject: Can you tell me what these memory chips are?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hi,

I have some memory chips that I need more info on. Specifically, I
have these chips:

 KM41C1000AJ-8
KM41C1000BJ-8 Is this really different from the AJ?
 KM41C4000AJ-8
 M5M44410AJ A Mitsubishi chip

I am reasonably sure the first two are 1Mbit x 1 chips. I hope the third is a
4Mbit x 1 chip. I hope the fourth is also a 4Mbit x 1 chip, but fear it is a
1Mbit x 4 instead. I intend to use these chips in having some SIMMs made up
for a PC.

In a somewhat related topic. Do any of these companies that build
SIMMS from "your" chips offer to remove the surface mounted chips from existing
PC boards?

 TIA,

The XR-2206 is made by EXAR, and is a monolithic function gernerator. It
makes a sig generator - it can make sine, square, triangle, ramp and
pulse waveforms.

I don't know of any crosses, but most electronics wholesalers ought to be
able to supply EXAR ics.

It's made by EXAR and is very common. Jameco Electronics (1-800-237-6948)
lists it as part #34972 and sells it for 3.75 in quantity 1. Jameco's
address is 1355 Shoreway Road, Belmont, CA 94002-4100.

I certainly hope it's not too dead. I should have my rig finally ready to
hit the airwaves this weekend, and hope to be CQ'ing away on 10 meter
novice band, so listen up folks :)

I have never heard any direct obscenities on the HF bands, but I
do know that they exist. I have heard a few EXTREMELY RUDE operators,
who, when questioned about excessive bandwidth and splatter, were rude to
the point of near swearing.

Along the same lines, to my knowlege there was only one time that
I swore on the air. I had just wrecked my car, smashing into the side of
a mountain cliff. It was about 7 AM, and I autopatched my dad to come
help me. I wasn't hurt, but I was still shaken up.

 Dad: "What happened?"

Me: "Well, I'm okay but the car is a little fu***d up."

I didn't realize it at the time I did it. Several hours later it
hit me, and I felt terrible! I never had anyone call or write me
regarding it, so I assume either anyone listening understood that I was
still in shock, or nobody was listening. In either case, I now keep it in
mind every time I key the mike.

      Louis

BTW: To all the foul mouthed hams that are out there...there is
still plenty of room on the good old 11 meter (Childrens
Band). Take it down there, and let's keep it clean on
              the ham bands!

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

It happens again and again. Every couple of weeks six tremendous large
files with AMATEURS ON USENET. This times each part from the six even
three times. I think al the FCC's and PTT's like it, because it keeps
my modem so busy....

ok, ok, I know it is a lot of work to keep this list updated and, ok it
is usefull to know who you can reach by usenet. But why not this alternative:

AMATEURS ON USENET: Those interested can download the latest updated
version by ftp form server....

This saves a lot of unnecessary downloadtimes, my phonebill and I must
say some irritation.
What do Y'all think of my idea??

Assuming the 5-12 watt CB entries were sideband (ie legal), was anything
done to the illegal CB operators? As a side note, none of the Amateur
stations were over the 1500W limit, although there's no way to prove
they were within the other constraints of their license.

Re: 5200 shutting off. Check to sse the the remote head is securely
seated in the radio or bracket. If it loosens, the rig goes dead.

This happens once in a long while with mine. Espcially the remote
bracket, as it's not that rigid and the left end wiggles loose.

The beauty of the CW bands is that all the obsenity is being *beeped* out.
That's what you're hearing :-)
