Hi Bruce! I have a pair now. All I did was order a replacement crystal
pair (RX and TX) from Jan crystals in Fla (they advertise in the ham
mags), replace the xtals, and retune the radio. Work pretty good, too!

Can someone tell me what is meant by the "MA" numbers listed with AO-13
operating schedules? They look like this:

Mode-B: MA 0 to MA 90
Mode-BS MA 90 to MA 120
Mode-S: MA120 to MA 122

I understand the meaning of the "modes" (tho I'm not familiar with
Mode-BS).

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------

             Solar activity was very low. The only x-ray flare of the
       past day was a B3 (no optical) at 26/1503Z. All sunspot regions
       currently on the disk are small and relatively inactive.

            Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
       very low.

            The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled.

            Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
       expected to be quiet to unsettled, becoming active by 29 March
       due to a recurrent disturbance.

NOTES:
     All times are in Universal Time (UT). Characters preceding begin, max,
     and end times are defined as: B = Before, U = Uncertain, A = After.
     All times associated with x-ray flares (ex. flares which produce
     associated x-ray bursts) refer to the begin, max, and end times of the
     x-rays. Flares which are not associated with x-ray signatures use the
     optical observations to determine the begin, max, and end times.

     Acronyms used to identify sweeps and optical phenomena include:

          II = Type II Sweep Frequency Event
          III       = Type III Sweep
          IV        = Type IV Sweep
          V         = Type V Sweep
          Continuum = Continuum Radio Event
          Loop      = Loop Prominence System,
          Spray     = Limb Spray,
          Surge     = Bright Limb Surge,
          EPL = Eruptive Prominence on the Limb.

 Please follow up with a post. I to am interested in getting an HT.

 Q. Are dual banders (say a 2m and 70cm) poor performers due to any
    compromises that are need to rx/tx on dual bands with 1 antenna?

 If the above is true then I gues it would be better to invest the money
 and buy a seperate unit for each band.

 Also has anyone gotten a Yaesu FT-11 (the really small new unit) No one
 talks about them on the net?

I just passed my no-code test last week, and have been listening to some
ham chatter on my SW receiver. Saturday night on 3910 kHz I heard some
of the most disgusting language I've encountered anywhere. One guy was
spouting one obscentity after another, and three other guys were laughing
at his inept signal and giving it right back to him. All but the
instigator were regularly giving their calls. Is this pretty much what I
have to look forward to?

Is that the only contact you listened too?? It doesn't take much SWLing
to notice that isn't the normal contact on the ham bands.

This sounds familiar.

I've seen this in two instances. In the first, the air flow around the unit had
gotten blocked, and the unit was overheating. Removing the offending blockage
and allowing the unit to cool back down did the trick. However, this doesn't
sound like your problem.

In the other instance, I had just had electrical work done on the car. The
radio would randomly shut itself down. I also had it turn itself on automatically
whenever I started the car. TO solve this one required resetting the unit (there's
some combination of keys to hit at startup, or some internal button you have to
press that resets the thing to factory settings. It's in the manual somewhere).
I guess it had just gotten internally confused when my electrical system broke...

If none of these do the trick, you'll probably have to ship it back, but do give
the factory reset a try before you dig out the shipping materials... Good luck!

Well, Jeff. Now I *know* you are in mathematics :-).
(Were you really afraid that this audience does not recognise "iff"? :-)

My V7A "postcard" came, so it was not a figment of my imagination.

BTW, the OKDXA folks are really fast at QSLing. The V7A card arrived in
about 10 days from when I dropped mine in the mailbox. The 6D2X folks
are *even* faster, 7 days portal to portal! Hats off to K5TSQ. A miracle
considering, in total, the cards went through at least 4 post offices :-).

No. It is a supernatural phenomenon called a "contest." :-) :-) Been
known to bring activity to a seemingly dead band.

I hope that the folks who have been complaining about 10m's death
turned their radios to 10m this (WPX) weekend. My 10m log for the
weekend shows CE, CX, HC8, HH, HK, HP, J3, KH6, KH8, KP2, KP4, LU, PY,
P4, TI, TG, VK9N, VP2E, VP2V, V3, YV, ZD8, ZL, 8P.  All done with a
wimpy setup from an apartment.
