To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hi, I am kinda new at this. I just picked up an Alinco DJ-180 TH and was
wondering if there was some reference book that was out that talked about
it's features. The documentation that comes with it isn't very good.

Thanks,
     Alex

RTTY gains another contest
--------------------------
Another RTTY contest will commence from this year. The total
is growing testifying to the popularity and usability of this
mode at any time of the sun-cycle.

This contest will be run by the Polish RTTY Society and will
take place on the last full weekend in April in every second
year. Mode will be Baudot only.

It is good to see new contests coming in, there have been
several started in the last two or three years, and
particularly good to have one established in what was a
country restricted by previous governmental practices.

Perhaps more countries from that region will become interested
in running contests in the HF digital modes, we hope so.

The rules will be published in April so keep watching and
please support this new contest -- give them a good start.

Information and rules supplied by VK2SG.

April is Good Friday.

Hope to see some of you there. Time is 7.30 pm and takes place

Paper for Teleprinters
----------------------
Please, PLEASE, does anyone want some teleprinter paper, I
have boxes of it. It is triplex paper (three sheets of paper,
two sheets of carbon paper), you can have it for the cost of
freight (you pay the freight). This paper will work in any
pressure machine, or even typewriters, no good for tractor
machines. When you unroll it you finish up with three rolls of
paper and two rolls of carbon paper. The paper you can use,
the carbon -- well you can give it to the children to mess up
the house. Don't worry about the amount you want, I have
enough.

18,000 ho ho, you've been reading the brochures ! Just decide on a
few creature comforts, a radio other than the one that comes standard
(unbelievably nasty) and you are talking a lot more dosh still. I managed
to resist the temptation of the central heating boiler and freezer, but
occasionally wonder about adding a winch. The headlamps are a bit
lacking (remember Spike Milligan's landladies' light-bulb jokes?) so a
pair of decent lamps is essential, and the lamp bracket needed is #200+
bull-bar shaped... these things are not much diffeerent to range-rover
prices when you get to decent levels of equipment...

With a heavy trailer behind and a pair of large horses, it's true
class shows.

The local RIS man has been given a Discovery with a pneumatic mast
through the roof. He's as happy as the proverbial dog with 2 tails.
they've bolted a 240v generator where the airconditioner pump would go.

Note for US readers, see lower photo on Feb QST cover to see one of
these vehicles out for a little fun....

    Cheers

My intention here is to set up a internet<->packet gateway. The catch is I
want it to be automatic. Once I made that decision I have to deal with
Part 97's rules about third-party traffic. That's where the issue greys...
What are my troubles? I know vulgarities are a problem, but anything else?
If it's just vulgarities, I can just write something to screen those out.
What other issues need to be dealt with. Or has that already been done?

There are several places that have this information. They are
called libraries and bookstores. Ask for atlas's and gazeteers. A good
gazateer has every four pub town in the country mentioned with lat,
long, pop etc.

I've tried mailing and each time have it is returned "Host Unknown". Our
systems administrator tells me that pro-janin.cts.com is "Not a Known
Internet Host".

 Would appreciate help. 73

Here in the US, us in AFROTC, at least, are *also* taught to pronounce Quebec
as KAY-BEC.

Subject: Ramsey P-IBM Packet Modem Help
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

HELP????

Well, maybe it's not so urgent, but...

I recently completed my Ramsey FX146, which seems to be working
just fine, so I figured I'd tackle the P-IBM Packet Modem.

Well, it only took a couple of hours to get put together, BUT
I can't seem to get anything out of it.

After looking through the schematic, and also looking at the serial
port signals, I've got a feeling something's wrong here.

The schematic (and artwork) show that the Packet RXD signal (from
the modem) is wired to pin 8 of the DB-9 computer serial port
connector, BUT, as far as I can recall (and the table on page 15
confirms), pin 2 is supposed to be RD for the computer. TXD is
wired to pin 4, but the table says it should be 3. RTS is wired
to the PTT signal (which seems ok, I guess). In fact, the packet
modem has pin 2 not connected to anything...

I quit the Baycom software and brought up a term program, which
showed no data when connected as instructed... but I DID get "activity"
on the display when I jumpered pin 8 (modem) to 2(computer) through
a break-out box... (Even with this jumper connection, the Baycom
software just sits there...).

I called Ramsey and was told to just simply connect the modem 9-pin to
the computer 9-pin 1-for-1.... but I just don't get it...

Has anyone else gotten this thing to work with a PC/AT style 9-pin
(or otherwise) connector as instructed, or in any way at all..??

Has anyone used the BayCom software with this unit, and am I
missing something big here??

The kit design is several years old.... I'd like to think that SOMEONE
has messed with this before....

Thanks in advance, and 73's all around...

Subject: Using a cell phone transmitter ??
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Has anybody here experimented with using the transmitter section
of a cell phone. Can the xmitter section be effectively isolated
from the rest of the phone or is the typical cell unit highly
integrated. I've never opened one up (yet :) so I'm interested
in any comments, speculations, experiences etc.

Thanks

Kok & Will: A number is appended following the prefix if and only if
the country in question has divided itself into districts. Thus, because
the Marshall Islands are so small in land area (lots of islands, though)
the Marshallese government has chosen not to partition the islands
into different radio districts.
