    As a regular reader of INFO-HAMS it would appear that there is someone
on the net that could help me. I am using a UNIX work station for my hobbie
computer. I am trying to Get UUCP to work with a friends computer that is on
the inter_net. Most of the time I can send mail to a user with a node address
but not allways. All of the time I can send mail and receive mail to the
machine doing the uucp connection with mine. Allways when mail comes from
the network to mine it ends up in the dead.letter file. I am looking for
someone on the net work to exchange headers with that could help me
with this. Working thru this has been a lot of fun but this is kind of
a bump. Thanks for your time ....

I will be in Edmonton in late June/early July and want to be able to use a
dual band HT.

Having previously had a short term reciprocal licence when in Vancouver some
years ago
I am aware that the best thing to do is to apply to the local Department of
Communications
 Regional Office. Can some one tell me which one that is for Edmonton, and
let me have the address.
If you know the fax number that is even better. (Faxes are wonderful for a
fast reply!)

Thanks for your help, maybe talk to you when I am there.

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------

       SESC SYNOPSIS COVERS THE INTERVAL FROM 13/2100Z TO 14/2100Z:

            Solar activity was very low.

            Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
       very low to low. Region 7688 (N19E20) has the only flare
       potential with a small chance of C-class activity.

            The geomagnetic field has been at unsettled to active
       levels for the past 24 hours. High latitude stations reported
       minor storming for the last half of the period. Energetic
       electron fluxes (GT 2 mev) have been at moderate to high levels
       during the period.

            Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
       expected to be mostly unsettled for the entire forecast period.

                        Major-Severe Storm    05/05/05

            STD: HF propagation conditions continued to gradually
       improve throughout most of the UTC day. Renewed activity near
       the end of the UTC day appears to be producing minor signal
       degradation again for transpolar and transauroral circuits.
       Similar periods of minor signal degradation can be expected
       over the next several days, although general conditions should
       continue to gradually improve.

NOTES:
     All times are in Universal Time (UT). Characters preceding begin, max,
     and end times are defined as: B = Before, U = Uncertain, A = After.
     All times associated with x-ray flares (ex. flares which produce
     associated x-ray bursts) refer to the begin, max, and end times of the
     x-rays. Flares which are not associated with x-ray signatures use the
     optical observations to determine the begin, max, and end times.

     Acronyms used to identify sweeps and optical phenomena include:

          II = Type II Sweep Frequency Event
          III       = Type III Sweep
          IV        = Type IV Sweep
          V         = Type V Sweep
          Continuum = Continuum Radio Event
          Loop      = Loop Prominence System,
          Spray     = Limb Spray,
          Surge     = Bright Limb Surge,
          EPL = Eruptive Prominence on the Limb.

   A first class enigma ! Ever try a spectrum analyser and
close-field probe on it ? Another thing would have been to try to use a
scope to verify that it was repetitive at engine revs, and if so what it
coincided with. I hate to have missed such a puzzle.

   Seems I got a couple of (mild) flames about saying no computers on my
Diesel, well MINE HAS NONE. There's one in the pull-out entertainment
radio, but that just pulls out. No engine management CPU, no computer
aided instruments of airconditioning, manual gears. Nice ! and it meets
all the emissions regulations scheduled to come in up to the end of the
century. It's a direct injection unit, and apart from start-up runs
without any visible smoke even on throttle opening and full boost.
 Fuel consumption is better than HALF that of the petrol (gasolene)
version of the same vehicle.. this translates into less CO2 as well as
less money. Direct injection turbodiesels have reduced the particle
problem somewhat, and it looks like the cyclone particle traps should
kill the problem completely. I'm not sure how the petrol engine could
compete afterwards without a CO2 remover....

  Cheers

Questions about FTP mirroring and access to appropriate software should
be directed to me, or do an Archie search on the keyword "mirror."

For those without FTP access (and only those without FTP access,
please), there is an FTP mail server at ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com. Send
the word "HELP" to this address for more information.

Additional documents on Usenet and other newsgroups may be obtained
from rtfm.mit.edu via anonymous FTP or via mail server (send the word
"HELP" to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu).

The American Radio Relay League has recently made available a
mail-server to distribute many of their informational documents in
electronic form. Send E-mail to info@arrl.org with "HELP" in the
message body for more information. These files are also mirrored
on ftp.std.com.

Yet another mail-server has been made available by Steve Harding,
KA6ETB. Send E-mail to ham-server@grafex.sbay.org with "HELP" in
the message body for more information.

Subject: Info Req. Vintage Gear
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hi Folks:

I'm new here. Are there people around this group who might be knowledgable
about older communications receivers?

I am interested in starting to collect some of the gear I and many of my
contemporaries started out with. (Hammarlund, Hallicrafters, National etc.)

I am concerned about availabiliy of service info and not paying too much
(I would not pay HRO-60 prices for a Knight Ocean-Hopper :-) )

Any direction and comments from like-interested people?

I agree 100% with Dan. I cannot remember things unless I really understand
them and the league manuals are definitely the optimum IMHO. They give you
actually more than you need to take the test and the good is that you can
use them later as a reference.
Regarding the code test, I'm with Dan again suggesting SuperMorse in any
version you can find (I think the current is 4.10 and should be widely
available on the net). Using the tape I guest can lead to memorization
after some time while SM can generate random patterns that teach you to
really copy code (the blocks are meaningless group of words) instead of
presuming the word before it is really received (useful when you'll
be on the air).

Subject: TX Amp for 20 mtrs QRP rigs.
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hi,

 Need recommendation for a small TX amp kit which takes about 4 watts output from my QRP rig and puts out 20-30 watts with
built in T-R switching (preferably solid-state T-R) and runs off 12-13.8v DC power supply. Must be small so I can fit it into my
existing rig's casing. Should be something similar to the QAMP-20 from Ramsey Hobby kits. BTW, this is for 20 meters. Tks.

See February QST and other amateur radio magazines for all the details --
maybe even look at ftp.fcc.gov (although i doubt anything on this is there...)
haven't pulled an index in a while, but also see info@arrl.org and some of the
other places (what is it? world.std.com? for one...)

QST printed the RM in Feb in it's entirety. The ARRL filed for and got an
extension of time for filing comments.

And if you have the bucks (proposal would be $70) and the call is unassigned
(it would be #1 on your list of 10 you submit - if the proposal were to pass
unrevised) you could get it...although i believe you pay regardless of whether
or not any of your ten favorite calls is available...
