I just bought my first 1296 rig and naturally have no
antenna. I am looking for input on what to get and/or
wanting to buy one. I have hade recommended to the the
loop Yagi from Down East Microwave. Opinions and offers
will greatly appreciated.

OK, since everyone else is dreaming of confusing calls, how about if I get:
W5HSI

Try sending that one in cw, with a paddle, especially at hi speed.

Actually, I think I'll keep mine. I've thought about changing it to a
WB
or
WA
or K
prefix but I rather like KB. Besides...I haven't been around long enough
to earn the W. ;)

Subject: Best truck/sport util for HF/VHF?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Thanks for your input on cars etc. so far.

I have narrowed my thinking to a small pickup or sport utility such as
Bronco, Trooper, etc., probably 86 to 91.

I am told that American cars have less solid state devices to go awry
due to RF from HF or VHF rigs, that Ford seems to be a good choice, that
Japanese vehicles may be more susceptible to RF.

Again, besides physical comfort (my back) criteria include lack of problems
from car to rig and vice versa, and other normal concerns.

All input welcomed. Thanks again. Bob

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------

Solar activity was low by virtue of a single,
uncorrelated C-class xray burst. Region 7690 (S15W54) was
       numbered.

Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
very low to low. Regions 7688 (N19E47) and 7690 have the best
       chance for C-class activity.

The geomagnetic field has been at unsettled to minor
storm levels. High latitude stations saw major storm levels.
Energetic electron fluxes (GT 2 MeV) were at high levels during
       the period.

Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to be unsettled to active levels for the next 24 hours
then mostly unsettled for the remainder of the forecast period.
High latitude stations will experience minor storming for the
       next 24 hours.

HF propagation conditions were below normal again over
most regions. Conditions are expected to gradually improve
over the next 48 to 72 hours, although a return to near-normal
conditions is not expected for several days thereafter.
Transpolar and transauroral circuits will continue to see the
strongest signal degradation and will be the slowest to
       recover.

All times associated with x-ray flares (ex. flares which produce
associated x-ray bursts) refer to the begin, max, and end times of the
x-rays. Flares which are not associated with x-ray signatures use the
optical observations to determine the begin, max, and end times.

Acronyms used to identify sweeps and optical phenomena include:

II = Type II Sweep Frequency Event
          III       = Type III Sweep
          IV        = Type IV Sweep

Ussually the shape would be the Freq at the top of a curve at 6 db down over
the frequency at the bottom of the curve at 60 db down. In other words if
attenuation is 6 db at 4 mhz and 60 db at 8 mhz then the shape is 2 to 1. It
can get more complicated that that but that is the idea.

Subject: Ham Radio Mail/UUCP/FTP Software Archive & Callsign Server @NS.RISC.NET
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

     * RISC.NET Ham Radio Server *

RISC.NET has established a series of services which all radio amateurs can
access. These services currently include access to the Buckmaster CD ROM
public domain files in addition to the Buckmaster callsign database.

Additional information can be obtained by writing to: root@ns.risc.net

This file contains information on:

 1. Accessing RISC.NET's callsign database
 2. Accessing RISC.NET's public domain shareware database

==============================================================================
1. ACCESSING THE BUCKMASTER CD-ROM CALLSIGN DATABASE

The Buckmaster Callsign Database is accessed by logging into a special account
called "hamradio". From this account, you can access the Buckmaster CD-ROM
callsign database (only the US calls at this point, as the international
database is encrypted and Buckmaster will not provide the key so we can
create a UNIX version of their ICALL.EXE program - if anyone knows how to
decrypt this data, please contact us!) or you can TELNET to the Buffalo or
NJIT callsign databases.

Procedure:

Telnet or rlogin to "155.212.2.2" (or, "ns.risc.net")
Login with user-id "hamradio". No password is required.

At this point the system is self-explanatory.

==============================================================================
2. ACCESSING THE BUCKMASTER CD-ROM PUBLIC DOMAIN SHAREWARE

The Buckmaster PD Software Library can be accessed in one of the following
manners: UUCP, FTP, or Mail-based archive server. A complete list of all
files available for transfer may be obtained by retrieving file:

 !~/ham-radio/mascd.dir

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   Anonymous UUCP Information:

Telebit Trailblazer Plus Dial-In: 1.401.455.0347
9600 to 300bps v.32/v.42 Dial-In: 1.401.331.3706
               ns.risc.net!login: xxcp
                  Password: xenix

To download a file, issue the following uucp request on your machine:

 uucp anomaly!~/ham-radio/files/<filename> yoursite!<to-filename>

All files are stored in /usr/spool/uucppublic/ham-radio on RISC.NET's
Archive.

To request the master list of ham-related files, uucp as follows:

 uucp anomaly!~/ham-radio/mascd.dir yoursite!yourname

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                         Mail-based Archive Server:

To answer the interim demand of people on the Internet who wish access
to the ham radio files, we have established a mail-based server which can
process requests for files. Note that in order to keep our SMTP connection
from getting bogged down, we only process *5* megabytes worth of software
requests PER DAY. Users with alternative means of obtaining files are
encouraged to do so.

To receive instructions on how to use the mail-based archive server, send
an e-mail message to "snarf@ns.risc.net", with a Subject: of 'snarf'
and the following two lines starting in column 1:

snarf address [your e-mail address]
snarf help

For example:

snarf address wb9aaz@gello.pcb.org
snarf help

These commands will forward a help file to your reply address. This help
file contains all information you require on how to obtain software listings
and uuencoded mailings of archive contents.

To receive a 104k detailed description of all ham files in the archive,
include the following line in the body of your message:

snarf send ham-radio/mascd.dir

Note that if you do not have an address line, or you have other errors in the
body of your text, you will not get a reply from the server.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

               Zmodem/Ymodem/Xmodem/Kermit/Sealink:

All files can be accessed from RISC.NET's "bbs" login, for those users without
UUCP or FTP access. Validation is required to access the file sections,
though, so on your first call leave a note in FEEDBACK stating that you're
calling to download from the ham-radio archive, and we'll see that you get an
special access account.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    FTP Access:

Our IP Address is: 155.212.2.2! Or, for those of you with Nameservers, try
"ns.risc.net"! As with our SMTP connection, the number of FTP users
we allow on our link is also limited to prevent net-congestion. If you
receive an "all ports are currently in use" message, please try again later.
Login using anonymous FTP account "ftp", and your e-mail address for a
password!

Subject: MGT - Semantics - 7/7 - Words To Avoid

Amateur Radio operators have a tendency to use terms that are
meaningless to others with whom they work (which leads to
confusion) and even cases where Amateurs are not used due to that
confusion. Accordingly, over the past two years a concerted
effort to avoid certain words has paid off in many areas in those
organizations cognizant of this aspect of interpersonal
communication.

Astute Amateurs do NOT say to the sheriff's deputy at the
roadblock "I'm a ham radio operator in the RACES, or the Vista
Radio Club." Rather, they reply "I'm with the Vista Country
Emergency Management Agency reporting to my duty station."

Here, our State Auxiliary Communications Service participants
make a conscious effort to avoid these terms: Amateur, ham,
ARES, ARRL, DEC, EC, RACES, SEC, section or emergency
coordinator, and volunteer. Instead, they say they work for the
Governor's Office of Emergency Services. If needed, they add that
they work for the Telecommunications Branch. Rarely is it
necessary to indicate in what capacity; but if needed, they are
FCC licensed communications specialists, not Amateur Radio
operators.

Recognition of how Amateurs deprecate themselves by their own
terminology was emphasized by a California Department of Forestry
official who pointedly requested that "Never say you are just a
volunteer, or an Amateur. Say you are a CDF Fire Information
Officer, for that is what you have been trained for, and are in
fact."

The words YOU use DO make a difference in how YOU are perceived
by other people. A poor choice of words (no matter how highly YOU
think of them) can unknowingly convey a concept or picture that
is totally at odds with what you THINK you conveyed!

Recently I have aquired a THP HL-90U amplifier with it I got
a schematic drawing only no other docs. I would love to aquire
both the owners manual and service manual. Actually I would be
happy with anything. The usual offer to compense for copying
mailing etc applies.

Thanks to all of you who have pointed out to me that ftp.std.com does in fact
allow anonymous logins. The first time I tried to login via anonymous to
them, I got the message about paying for an account and then FTP promptly
disconnected me - leading me to believe that a paid account was the only
access they allowed.

Someone pointed out via mail that the limit on anonymous logins may have
been exceeded resulting in the ftp disconnection.

Anyway, I tried again - and success! FTP anonymous DOES work! Thanks to
all who straightened me out.

This rule is violated all the time. Examples are V7A and V7X.

The ARRL DXCC list shows

    A2 Botswana
    A3 Tonga
    A4 Oman
    A5 Bhutan
    A6 United Arab Emirates
    A7 Qatar
    A9 Bahrain

Geez, perhaps I can move to the UAE and use A6TY :-).
