This really isn't all that uncommon. Most businesses wait until they
receive notification from the bank that a deposit was made for $X.
They then process a credit memo for your credit card, which has to
be processed by the credit card company, so it can take upwards of
two months before a credit is realized. Not ideal, by any means,
but not uncommon or completely unacceptable either.

I purchased an AR-2500 from ACE, the only complaint I have is that I
asked for a schematic for modification purposes, and I received a
hand-drawn schematic which was very difficult, if not impossible in
places, to read.

The scanner itself, internally, seemed rather cheesy, but then again,
there really isn't alot to scanners, is there? The first question that
I, and other friends who saw the unit, asked ourselves was "is this
thing really *worth* $450?" Since I've never opened a Bearcat or
Uniden, I really have nothing to compare it to.

Overall, the unit works just fine, and I have no complaints with
performance. From that perspective, I would say that indeed, yes,
the unit is "worth" $450, since it performs as expected, and I was
willing to pay $450 for that level of performance.

Would I purchase another unit from ACE? I would have to say yes.
Would I purchase the same unit? Probably.

Special reminder
----------------
As next weekend is Central Coast Field Day at Wyong, please
note that the usual Sunday morning broadcast will go out at
the same time a day earlier on the Saturday...

Repeat, the morning broadcast will take place at 0030UT on
Saturday 26th February.

Of course, this is so ANARTS relay officers can go to the
Field Day along with the rest of the East Coast amateurs. Look
for us there, and say hello.

Back to normal the following Sunday ...

          ------------------------------------------

Change in 80m broadcast relay
-----------------------------
Due to very poor propagation in this part of the cycle during
summer months, it has been decided to drop the 80m relay of
the cast from December to March inclusive. The relay will
resume on the first Sunday in April, which is the 3rd this
year.

This could be reviewed in future years, but should be in force
until at least 1997, judging by the way the current solar
cycle is progressing. The minimum for the cycle is estimated
variously to come from late 1995 to around April 1996. This
presumes that the cycle length will continue to shorten to
under 10 years, the last cycle being 9.6 years in length. The
decline of the present cycle is running three to eight months
ahead of cycles 18, 19, and 21 (cycle 20 was of much lower
amplitude).

Something good to remember -- the present cycle (cycle 22)
reached its maximum in the record short interval of 2.8 years.
Perhaps this next one will be similar.

Geophysical Summary January 1994.

A reminder for the Gosford - Central Coast Field Day
----------------------------------------------------
Don't forget the Central Coast Field Day on 27th February, at
the prestige venue of the Wyong Racecourse in Howarth St.
Wyong.

There you will meet the committee of ANARTS -- Col VK2CTD,
President, Jim VK2BQS, Vice-President, Alan VK2DPM, Treasurer,
and Pat VK2JPA, Broadcast Officer, will be floating around
somewhere with a video camera. (I am also a member of the
Gladesville Amateur Radio Club Inc. specialising in ATV, and I
have been told that I don't float! Pat)

Don't forget to enter the Morse contest ANARTS will be running
again. It was such a success last year that it will be a
feature of the stand again this year. Polish your sending and
receiving skills and come along and participate in this most
historic method of amateur digital transmission.

A late amendment to our previous announcement of a display of
computer pictures. Murphy has struck again and the hard disk
crashed rather permanently by the sounds of things, so we
can't show the fractals and other images we had lined up for
display. There's always next year.

See you there.

Conditions on 16th were unsettled to active, and quiet to
unsettled on 17th.

Ionospheric F2 critical frequencies at Sydney were near
predicted levels 11th to partway through 13th when frequencies
were firstly enhanced by up to 40 per cent, then depressed by
up to 30 per cent after 1700UT. Frequencies on 14th to 15th

I'd expect this will come under the "vanity call sign" program ... if and
when it occurs ... and will require FCC 610V.

I doubt that they (the Government) will reissue old calls if they can be sold
thru the vanity program (sure don't like that name!!!).

Good luck. Hope you get it.

Subject: Chest Harness for HT?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

A few years ago, at a cross-country ski center, I saw an employee with a
handheld radio attached to his chest with some sort of harness. It held
the radio at a diagonal angle such that the antenna (VHF duck) pointed at
his left shoulder and the base of the radio pointed at the right side of
his waist.

The harness seemed to be made out of neoprene or nylon and was black in
color. I want one. It would be terrific for cross-country skiing,
because if you fall, you don't fall on your radio. Even if you
don't fall, it makes the radio easier to use because you can simply
press the ptt switch without removing the radio from the harness.

Does anyone have any information?

I think WD40(tm) will cut it. I don't know know what would be a good cleaner
to remove the WD40... Jim KA4GHX

Tin cans is another good one. Maybe not as colorful as XYL,
but should help with the project. For the new fellows, tin
cans is an OF word for headphones. Ya don't hear it much
any more. I guess everybody uses speakers now.

The problem here, of course, is that the aviation handhelds are type
accepted for aviation use, and the TH-78A is not. It's against FCC
regulations to use the TH-78A to transmit in the aircraft band. If I
had one along in an airplane and there was an emergency requiring its
use, then I'd use it, but I wouldn't expect the FCC to be pleased.

Hello, Tony. Nice to see you post again. You have been strangely
silent of late. :-)

It seems that we have a wild assumption here on the motives of some of
the staff. I am a paid staffer, but I would never take the kind of
abuse I sometimes have to take just for the money; I may enjoy the
"power" of my position, but to me it is a power to get things done --
a power to help make the world a little bit better than it was
before I started messing with it.

I think I know the HQ staff and management better than you, and I
couldn't say with any certainty why they are here or whether their
dedication to Amateur Radio is greater or less than their appreciation
for their paychecks. I can assume safely that they have both dedication
and appreciation, but, then again . . . don't we all. You spoke with
certainty where certainty just can't exists.

: Actually, I'll have to go over the annual report I have for the ARRL more
: closely.

Actually, actually, our dues are $30 per year, $24 for over age 65,
$4 for family members, $4 for blind members (no QST), plus special
rates for hams under 21 that are the oldest licensed amateur
in their households.

I had sent you MY copy of the 1992 Annual Report, so I will have
to leave it to you to look up all of the applicable salary information.
As you do, we usually have about 115 employees or so. Take the total
reported for salaries and benefits and divide by 115. I am sure
you will appreciate that the benefits part includes medical insurance,
all applicable taxes and workman's compensation. Hopefully if it
is all thoroughly analyzed we can all feel a little bit richer. :-).
This year I will get two, so I can send you one and still have
mine; it makes great reading. :-)

Do point out the cost of living up here in the expensive Northeast.
It will help everyone put it all in the right perspective.

For now, 73. You all gotta' invite me back to do another presentation
at your local club. I thoroughly enjoyed my last visit. Ed.

I have been known to give a 2 by 2 report. I reserve it
for the obnoxious, ill mannered operators who have
transmitters with more Watts than their IQ.

Does anyone know how well this device works? I saw it in my most recent catalog
from Tucker Electronics and Computers. The description says it requires +12VDC,
so I guess you would have to haul around an extra battery if you wanted to go
pedestrian mobile! Has anyone tried it with the TH78a?
