Well, its sad, but then I suppose all of society in dumbing down,
why should we expect amateur radio to be different?
If you doubt what I'm saying, read a few packet bulletins and then tell
me if the writer was even literate.
I'm not talking about typos... we all make these... without an editor or
the time to proof.
I'm talking about horrible spelling and grammatical errors in basic syntax
and sentence constructions.
If the writer cannot compose a coherent sentence, then why should we
believe they are enough of an in focus thinkers to bother reading?
I had one idiot on packet jump all over me for typos of a minor
punctuation ommission. Then go one in this one 200 byte diatribe to
spell grammar (grammer) and lose as (loose).
You would have though that this idiot,who was so intent on drawing
attention to construction, grammar, and punctuation errors would have
gone to the trouble to check his own!

A CSCE ... is valid for up to 365 days after it is issued.
So, clearly, it depends on leap years. :-) I would interpret this to mean
Nov. 7, 1993-Nov. 6, 1994, since 1994 is not a leap year.

I'm with Gary on this one, as far as choosing a mobile rig over an HT. I
have both, but the real workhorse is the mobile rig, and the HT tends to be
mostly a "toy" (although occasionally it's useful for public service work).
I have a mag-mount antenna and a power adaptor that ends in an alligator
clip for ground and a flat blade for +12V; I use this in three different
Chevrolets, by slipping the flat blade into the connectors on the
electrical (fuse) block. I've used it in rental cars with a cigarette
lighter adaptor, but only on low power.
Personally I like Icom for VHF/UHF; I've got their IC-3230 and old IC-27,
both of which are fine. For bells and whistles, you need several memory
channels for the local repeaters, a tone encoder for those that require
CTCSS tone access, and if you get a lot of interference from distant
repeaters on the same frequency as your favorite machine, a tone _decoder_
is a blessing. Here in the East, with repeaters everywhere, 25 watts is
plenty, and the ability to decrease power to 5 watts or less is nice. Out
west, with longer distances to cover, you might want to go with a 45-watt
unit.
Those are the basics. A touch-tone mike for autopatch is nice.
Dual-banders are nice if there are active 440-MHz repeaters in your area.
More memory channels seem to be always needed, but you can get by on half a
dozen in a pinch.

I'm an ARRL member, and considering ARRL put a fair amount of effort into
compiling the Repeater Directory, I'd feel they weren't using my money
wisely if they did _not_ enforce their copyright to the Directory. I doubt
they said they _own_ the _facts_ represented there, but still you can't
just rip off their effort to create your own competing directory, on-line
or printed. Many city directories bury errors in their compilations, and
have sued people who reproduce those same errors.
You should check with a lawyer on this, but it's my understanding that if
you do the basic research to compile all the data _yourself_, and choose a
format that is dissimilar to the existing, copyrighted work, you probably
don't infringe it.

Anyone have an opinion on the smallest and lightest 2 meter HT out there
on the market (even if it is not currently sold new?) I would require
a watt or a little more output, PL tones, but don't really care about
memories much. I would require some sort of alkaline battery pack.
My plan is to hike a long piece of the High Sierra, or possibly a long
stretch of the Appalachian Trail from Maine south for the summer.
I just turned 40, and things are looking bleak from the inside, I need
a lot of time to think.
So, I am going to backpack, and must go for 7 to 10 days at a time without
resupply. All my items must be light and pack very well. The two luxury
items I plan to take are an HT for 2 meters, and the NorCal 40 CW
transceiver, for weekly contacts and any possible emergency. I may take
one or the other alone, but the next few months of planning and shakedown
cruises will tell the tale.
SO.....anyone ever look into this? I am NOT concerned with brands, ruggedness
is not the main factor here either. Weight and size are the controlling
dimensions.

Creative Technology DSP folks have given me an unbelievable reply. The
Sound Blaster 16 with ASP has been on the market for some time now and
people are still scrambling for information. It seems it will not soon
be forthcoming. They have said to me that they are going to keep their
Advanced Signal Processor chip, its programming model, etc. a secret. The
shortsightedness of companies in this area is never ending. The secrets
inevitably come out and the people who could make their product for them
are to put off by this attitude. An open system always sells better than
a closed one and inevitably leads to applications the developers never
dreamed of. I had several in mind which they will now have done on a
competitors card. If you can believe it, they had the gall to ask detailed
technical questions about modems without answering a single technical
questions other than to tell me the development system cost $5200. FORGET IT.
I will develop using the Cardinal or Hamblaster depending on which turns out
to be more open about its architecture and/or the most versatile for our
applications.

I will be travelling to Cairo in the near future. I have been told to forget about
bringing any amateur radio equipment as there is no possibility of getting an
operating license there.
But I was also told by the ARRL to not even bring a short wave receiver/alarm
clock/AM/FM Radio as they were very strict on any type of radio equipment.
Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this?

BTW my Local Notice to Mariners this month stated that 500Khz CW was
discontinued to allow 518Khz SITOR - the CG feels that is a much more
useful service I guess. Oh well.
