Frank, The best source of info re: GMRS, by far, is: Personal Radio Steering Group they are at: P.O. Box 2851, Ann Arbor Mich 48106, Voice (313)-MOBILE3, and have a BBS at (313)-995-2100. P.R.S.G. membership is very reasoanble, and will provide you with more information on GMRS than you'll ever want or need. Additionally, they will supply the necessary application forms from FCC as well as information as to how to complete them. When I got my GMRS license, it was $35. Forms are also available from FCC, General Mobile Radio Service, PO Box 358230, Pittsburgh, PA 15251-5230 ask for FCC FORM 574. Hope this helps. PS. Iv'e not seen a GMRS FAQ on internet. Like yourself, I spent considerable time investigating the price/benefit of the competitors. I purchased my rig primarily for use while camping. I've used it very sucessfully with just a long wire up in the trees. The optional antenna tuner is well worth the investment. CW performance is superb, and I've work plenty of DX on SSB. The FT-890 is now my promary rig. The optional CW and SSB filters make a small improvment, but frankly I think a good DSP Digital audio filter would be a much better investment. On the down side, I've been less than thrilled with RTTY performance, owing probably to the already narrow passband of the SSB filter. There is no provision for a RTTY passband IF filter as found on many other transceivers, and while Yaesu describes RTTY/PACKET operation in their FT-890 manual, I'ld be a lot happier to have an IF filter better taylored to the wider shift/bandwidth of these modes. helpful. 73s, Thom/N2CBV ------------------------------ End of Info-Hams Digest V94 #98 ****************************** ******************************
