Talking about looging programs?

Look at the Windows program created by W5XD -- a demo version is
available on the CompuServe Ham Forum, and some other outlets.
You can also contact Wayne directly (he is good in the book, Round
Rock TX). I've run his demo on a notebook 386 quite nicely. Wayne
used his program in his section winning CW scores.

I have no financial interest; Wayne was VP of the Williamson County
(TX) ARC while I was Pres. (before moving to Atlanta). A friend,
a good programmer, and a genuinely nice amateur.

systems + executables created on a Sparcstation running SunOS 4.1.3.
You should be in good shape.

Yes. All the information in the database is also in a simple comma-

I'm really, really impressed with the QRZ! CD. I haven't seen the
other you mention, but having seen the QRZ! CD, I see no reason to
look further. Like everything else I've ever bought from Walnut

Even with the correct numbers here, you would need 60 to 70% efficiency.

Steven has hit it on the head. As hams, we have for years said "can't
afford a commercial rig? Home-brew or build a simple kit." Then
QST and all the other magazines which bang this drum (which quite
handily fills up magazine pages with circuits that few ever
build) reap big advertising dollars from kit companies.

We, as a hobby, actively encourage newcomers to try these things
out.

As a hobby which has a tradition of mentoring ("elmering"), we are
doing the Right Thing(TM) when we identify something like a Ramsey
kit which is apt to blow a new ham's radio budget out the window
while discouraging him or her, and leaving him without a working
rig. I'd much rather see a Novice/Tech find an old but serviceable
IC-2 (and maybe put the Ramsey 'brick' on it) than have him or
her get their hopes up on the FX- kits, only to be disappointed.

I fell into this as a newcomer. I bought a Heath HR10-B and found
out that construction was a LOT harder than thinking about it. And
for the price, I *could* have found a used, solid, working receiver
and saved much grief. I still would have done some construction,
(QRP transmitter, Xtal calibrator, etc.) but would have initially
tackled less imposing projects.

Keep in mind, this was with a Heathkit, which was absolutely the
best. I think all of us who knew Heath know that Ramsey is no
Heath.

(This information may be reproduced freely).

Russian Amateur Radio Emergency Services (RARES) was born
during the turbulent days of the Chernobyl tragedy. But RARES
true abilities emerged in December of 1988, at the time of
Armenia's devastating earthquake. No communications were
available with the disaster zone, with a notable exception of
amateur radio. Our emergency network was fully operational two
hours after. Rescue teams, as well as the Disaster Relief HQ
in Moscow and Armenia, had their communications provided by
RARES and the amateurs of the former Soviet Union. May 1991 -
another earthquake in Georgia - and again RARES assisted the
search and rescue teams. There are many similar examples, where
RARES provided invaluable life-saving links, in situations
   totally lacking goverment communication support.
On August 19, 1991, the faithful day, when democratic
movement in Russia was hanging by a thread, RARES station
begun transmitting Boris Yeltsin's decrees to the peoples of
Russia. And the following day, R3A became operational from
Moscow's "White House", providing communications support for
three days to the President of Russia, the members of the
Parliament and the "Radio Russia", when the putschists took
control of media and telephone facilities.
We, the RARES members, are ready, willing and able. We are
ready to react immediately, in Russia or anywhere else (like
during Iranian earthquake of 1989), where our help is needed.
We are a thousand-strong with members all over Russia. Our
sole purpose is to provide disaster relief communications. We
do the job, but at present lack outside financial support and
modern equipment. High on the list of our needs are mobile and
portable equipment, generators, means of transportation and
tents. We are in dire need of digital communications
equipment. Any and all assistance would be welcome and
attention to our needs would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Seeking Opinions of Memory Keyers
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

I have a Logikey, an AEA MM3, and a MFJ (newer model with the "menu
system"). I vote for the Logikey. Smoothest keying, most integrated
operation. Most ability to embedd instructions in the memories (ie:
programming the memory, in addition to saving code, that is). My only
complaint is that it only has 4 memories. I would really want at least 8.
However, I still think its the nicest overall.

Will run off of a 9v battery (although I havn't tested how long.

Mine had a problem - it generated RFI in the 17 meter band - in the CW
subband (imagine that - a keyer generating CW RFI!!). I called W9KNI, and
he suggested more shielding. Added several wires, slightly bent the audio
cable I was using to key the radio (to improve shield contact), and the
problem went away. My guess is that they all cause slight RFI, but most
outside of the CW subband, or outside of the ham bands entirely. If this
was the case, I never would have known of the problem, and it never would
have bothered my.

Hope this helps

Subject: Stolen TH-78A - Need your help!
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Ham Radio Ops. in New York and Arizona please take note!

Returning from my trip from New York (LGA) to Phoenix via Philadelphia -
My baggage was lost by US AIR. When I picked up the luggage from
Tucson International where they had flown it via America West, my KENWOOD
TH-78A and a camera had been stolen. The Kenwood has my callsign on powerup -
N7QVL.

If you live in one of these three areas, !PLEASE! be on the look out for the
radio at swap meets and/or my callsign on the air.

I realize that this is a long-shot but I thought I would put the power of the
InterNet to the test.

Information concerning the radio or other recommendations can be E-Mailed
to me at....

Thanks - Mike

ps. Yes, a claim IS being filed with the airline. But I would like the thief
put UNDER the jail. :)

Subject: The differences in CW filter performance

Hi Conway, I have both 250Hz and 500Hz CW filters and I prefer the 500Hz.
The center frequency 750Hz component in the background noise bothers me with
the 250Hz and it does ring worse than the 500Hz filter.
The big boys tell me that 250Hz filters are for "really serious CW".
I'm hardly ever serious.
