$.40 per watt is great and with a controller to boot. Tell us
where these guys are and/or their phone number please.

Does anyone know if and where a callsign server exists? I thought I saw
some discussion on this a while ago, but I didn't get around to reading
the posts. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Can anyone recommend some good books on copying code??

Next test date is in March here, and I want to be ready
to "ace" the 13wpm general class code test. I'm using
SuperMorse and listening to code on my radio. I remember
hearing about a book or two that describes how to copy
behind and gives other hints and tips on copying code.

Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated.

Gary Coffman KE4ZV mentioned:-

Yes this is certainly the case, if he wanted to broadcast
WFM (which I suppose is the idea anyway).

>2) redesign the PLL synthesizer to cover the new range.

I don't know about this, there are some handhelds which already
cover (on RX) these bands or at least very close. I suspect then that
those PLLs have the inherent ability to receive the 88-108 without
redesign. What needs to be changed is the controller. Similar things
have been done in some mods for handhelds. Given that the PLL can already
reach the frequency, it must be that the computer automatically disables
TX on unauthorized bands and I presume this could be over-ridden manually
or something similar. Just a theory.

>3) rebuild the driver and PA output networks.

Probably, if you want maximum efficiency and its a high power
unit so you don't destroy output section.

Uh, folks, Fred Lloyd posted a note here about the date of birth error a few
weeks after the spring CD came out. A new program for that disc was immediately
posted to an FTP site that fixed the problem. The new (fall) disc does not
have this problem.

As a matter of fact, I do. I went through the exact same thing with
Harley Davidson during the '70s. Harley's were lousey then and now
they are the most successful motorcycle company in the world. If

Didn't H-D change ownership around this time? I seem to remeber Hogs were'nt
a good buy in the 70's and early 80's but after Americans bought it back from
the Japanese parent company, quality shot thru the roof.

Maybe Ramsey should sell now, and buy back in about ten years.

I believe kits should be engineered better than assembled gear, since there
are more variables and less quality control with kit assembling as opposed
to factory assembling and testing.

Many people buy kits because they can't afford assembled. If they can't afford
assembled, how can they afford the test gear to get a poorly designed kit to
work?

Maybe Ramsey should pre-assemble and test things like synths and filters.

Don't worry about the loss in the coils; it'll be small relative to the
loss from operating less than a quarter-wavelength above ground. I'd
adjust the antenna length and coils for about a quarter of the way from the
bottom end of the 160-m band, put the coils about in the middle of each leg
of the dipole, and use a tuner to cover the whole band (which is, in fact,
what I plan to do when I get around to it :-) ). Because you're working
at relatively low frequencies, I suspect you'll have to live with the large
inductances. You might reduce the size of the coils a bit by winding them
around a ferrite core _of the proper material_. Make sure it's a suitable
material for 160 meters.
