ANARTS broadcast schedules for the holiday season ================================================= The broadcast will go into recess after 19th December 1993 and resume on 9th January 1994. While this is not a long break for the hard-working relay officers, it is hoped they will come back fresh to many contacts on the bands. It gives time for antenna overhauls and the like, as well as making the acquaintance of their various families again, hi hi. We hope to bring you as much, if not more, news and information DXwise in the coming year. ----------------------------------------- Something to look forward to : Frank VK2FJL has sent us a large item on Guidelines for the preparation of programs for transmission by Amateur Radio teletype. Now, so close to the end of the year and to a three week break, is not good time to run this item as it will go over more broadcasts than that. In order to keep the material fresh and continuous, we will commence with the first broadcast for 1994, which will be the 9th of January (see above). We thank Frank for his contribution and trust he doesn't mind not seeing it in print until then. This should be very interesting so don't forget to be watching in the new year. There are no significant regions on the disk. Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be at very low levels, with a minimum chance of a C-flare. STD: A long-decay class B9.6 x-ray event was optically correlated with an eruptive prominence on the northwest limb near N14 between 15:43 and 15:51 UTC. Recent Yohkoh images suggest a new region may be approaching the east limb. A full-disk x-ray image from Yohkoh has been appended to this report. The geomagnetic field has been at quiet levels for the past 24 hours. Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels. Active conditions are expected around the 15th and 16th of December. STD: The responsible coronal hole is now crossing the central meridian. The weak state of the high and polar latitude ionosphere will continue to produce minor signal degradation for signals crossing these regions, particularly through the local night and sunrise sectors. Conditions are expected to worsen on 15 and more generally on 16 December due to enhanced geomagnetic and auroral activity. Middle and low latitude paths should continue to see near-normal propagation except on 16 December where night sector paths may see minor signal degradation due to the anticipated enhancement in geomagnetic activity. I find it extraordinary how many people have responded to what I haven't written, as if I have written it. Okay, folks, once again (too bad we can't make BIIIG SLOOW LETTTTERRRS for some people here): There is nothing in Scratchi which I find personally offensive. However, I know enough people well enough that will find it offensive that I can state that it's a good idea if it's handled delicately. The particular ham I'm thinking of is the son of Japanese American citizens were interred soley because of their national origin during the second world war. He is familiar with "Scratchi." He hates the kind of stereotypes it represents. And he wouldn't enjoy seeing it resurrected here. Off hand, about a half a dozen faces come to mind, when I think of potential negative reactions to this kind of ethnic stereotype in the popular press. I don't see arguing on behalf of these folks as 'politically correct,' and I damn well resent seeing valid concerns trivialized in that way. > You're judging it from your >cultural background but others may find something equally valid based on >theirs. One cultural background making fun of another one in the popular press, in the presence of people of that background, is not valid behavior. Lighten up a little, huh? And let's take this discussion to a more >appropriate newsgroup like alt.pc.cops. I'd like to re-define political correctness. After all, 'political correctness' means a knee-jerk reaction to what isn't said or meant. Clearly, there's plenty of that hereabouts. After all, here we have a guy who, when it's suggested that a bit more circumspection be used (not censorship, not silence, but rather a sense of context and purpose) in posting potentially offensive material, hops up and down shouting 'net.cop! pc! net.cop! pc!' Yeah, that requires deep reflection. Would the latter yield spurious readings? If the feedline were lossless, it wouldn't matter at which end of the feedline you insert the SWR meter. With a lossy feedline, you will measure a lower SWR at the transmitter end than at the antenna end. However, if you only need a relative reading (e.g. you are trimming the antenna for lowest SWR), you can put the SWR meter at either end: the "dip" in reading will occur under the same conditions. (But the dip will be lower and broader at the transmitter end.) Please answer a few simple questions. Do you mind if Myron posts old Scratchi articles? Are you in fact encouraging Myron to post Scratchi articles? Would you prefer Myron (or anyone else) never post another Scratchi article again? Once you can determine exactly what your position is, Greg, then we can debate rationally. From your previous posts, it was pretty clear to me that you were sending Myron the internet equivalent of a neighborly "Cease and Desist" order. > If you continue to claim that I said this, you demonstrate that you > are either illiterate, or a liar. Tsk, tsk. Greg. I don't see that I have given you any reason to degenerate to the name-calling level. I don't think I've done justice to explaining my position. Let me go at it from another angle. I think it is important for all people to think of others as equals. Think of your fellow man as just another person. This "PC" emphasis sensitises us to the DIFFERENCES in people. So, instead of thinking of your fellow man as "Joe" you think of him as being "black", "asian", "Muslum", "Jew", "Christian", "Fat", "Skinny", "Homosexual", "Heterosexual", "Asexual", "male", "female", "native", "foriegner", etc, etc. When instead, you should think of him as just "Joe." > And we thought Archie Bunker was imaginary. What a creative bit of ad homenim argument. Trying to equivocate my good name with that of the fictious bigot Archie Bunker. Ok, Greg, try to find just ONE quote in any of my postings that shows me being a bigot. -- Bill Coleman, AA4LR ! CIS: 76067,2327 AppleLink: D1958 Principal Software Engineer !
