6CW4 ( and 6DS4 sub) if run at the usual 60-70vdc, will indeed be prone to
easy over load.

Increase the kathode resistor ( if none, use >150 ohms) and then raise plate
volts to 125.

Then it'll require more signal to reach the 'IMD point'

I have heard of people running em as high as 175vdc, but at 2-3ma....
I don't know how long it'll last up there....but....

Northlink indeed does get into Phoenix on four repeaters:

North Phoenix area: Towers Mtn 449.175

East Phoenix area: MT. Ord 444.500

South Phoenix area: So. Mtn. 442.125

Gary, you are seeing the devil behind every bush. You apparently don't
know much about the structure of the typical "cabinet." First, the
Section Managers are not the Director's "appointees." They are elected
by the members in each section within the Division. The ARRL Affiliated
club Presidents are also invited to attend the cabinet meetings, at
least in the New England Division. These are elected on a local level,
by each club. The rest of the cabinet often includes many of the
Director's appointees, but the cabinet is not the "old boy" network
that you are imagining, not by a long shot. I have seen more than one
of these "OBs" roast the Director for one thing or another.

Unfortunately, some of those who serve as "loyal" opposition do so
in ignorance of the facts. This significantly undermines their
effectiveness with those who have looked at things with their
eyes open.

>(Lord knows though that it's hard enough to find *any* volunteers

And unfounded accusations of "good ol' boyishness" directed at those

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to transmit data over FM radio with some speed if
possible.

I would appreciate some advice on what modems can be used, what protocols
and what is affordable but good hardware for FM transmission.

I will do some tests with one of these FM microphones over short distance
to check out Forward error control and the modem connection, but the
whole idea is that it will be a digital FM broadcast station sending out
various data.

Have no radio background, so if you have to use very technical words, please
explain them also.

Many thanks in advance for your answers.

Subject: Comments on logging programs solicited!
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

I received and tried five different general logging programs
this last September. These were mostly demo disks (but still
enough to get a good feel for the program's merits and failings.)
None were hot contest-style, ala CT. -- To shorten a long story,
I found WB2OPA's LogMaster Plus/Plus to come out on top. Its
main advantage to me was its ability to produce customized reports.
An example: to pull and print from the overall data base a report of
all contacts confirmed (QSL), by country, by mode, by alphabetized
call sign. This gave me a master report for my QSL file. I then
repeated the request for 10M, 40M, 80M and 160M as separate,
smaller reports. The LogMaster program easily produced these. Now
I feel I've some control over 1000's of bits of data and cards for
the first time in many years of DXing. -- Overall LogMaster has
proven a valuable tool and I continue to appreciate what it can do
as I use it. (By the way, for my "average" speed in contest, this
program worked fine for me. It might be a tad slow if you're making
several thousand Q's over a weekend, but for my several hundred, its
"rapid entry" mode and autiomatic date/time recording proved great.
-- I'd suggest trying several demo programs, just as I did. Include
LogMaster in your trials. Its worthy of a test.

I can't find the Mailgroup for Macintosh users but perhaps someone here knows
how I might upgrade my Mac Plus from it's present 1 Mb RAM to 2.5 or 4 Mb.
I think it's more than just swapping SIMMS - if I recall, it involved clipping
some resistor ?
Anyone else out there using MacRatt with the PK-900 ? Any ideas on how to open
an additional receive window and have all traffic of P1 go to one window and P2 go to
the other ?

REPLY: Amateur Radio volunteers are actively involved and are
on-call as an emergency response team. They are dispatched by the
fire communications center and have a Multi Agency Command Support
vehicle equipped with fire, police and Amateur radios as well as
several telephone systems, FAX, on-board computer with hazmat
programs, copier and fieldcommand supplies.
Past responses for the Amateurs include:
Greater alarm fires (Command support functions)
Police SWAT responses (Command support functions)
Search and Rescue operations (Multi agency-communications
coordination, command support)
Loma Prieta Earthquake; Oakland (Provided communications for
Red Cross)
Oakland Firestorm (One team operated a staging area in Orinda
where resources from all over Northern California gathered pending
assignment to the firestorm and two other significant area fires. A
second team provided command support for the tactical branch operating
on the ridge above the firestorm.)
The District operates a packet radio bulletin board and has
packet capabilities in all fire stations. 2M and 70CM voice
capabilities are provided at the headquarters station and is available
at the outlying stations. The Emergency Operations Center (at City
Hall) also has HF capability.
Amateurs are used in many roles which permit uniformed fire
personnel to remain available for more dangerous duties.

Subject: Russian Robinson Club
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

                        Hello ALL

The radio amateurs-travellers club named "Russian Robinson
Club" interested in world island program - IOTA is applied
to separate radioamateurs, associations, funds and also
clubs, interests of which are equally connected to the
above mentioned club.
The club "RRC" ( Russian Robinson Club ) created at the
beginning of 1993 rendered support in organization more
than ten island arctic DX' pedition in 1993, two of which
are NEW IOTA:
4K2RRC (EU 019), 4K3RRC (EU 082), 4K4RRC (AS 005), 4K5RRC
(AS 025), 4K3GW (EU 161), 4K3WQ (EU 162), 4K3/RW3GW
(EU 082), 4K3/RA1ZA, 4K3/RA1WQ, UW1ZZ/A (EU 082), UW1ZZ/A
(EU 161), 4K4DV (AS 029).
During this year Russian island national diploma program
(RRA) has been developed like national island program of
Italy (IIA), Spain (IDEA), France (DIFM), Portugal (DIP),
Polska (SP IOTA A).
Competitors of this program have receive already more than
120 diplomas. We greatly hope that interest to Russian
national island "RRA" will be increased every year. Besides
it a list with separate numbering of Russian islands
according to "RRA" has been developed already.
Club "RRC" publishes magazin - report every quarter which
informers about members of this club; last island, polar and
sea expedition (.../mm); IOTA - News; database of Russian
island stations, antarctic station (4K1); diplomas and other
news.
Every Sunday at 08:00 utc 14.120 +/- QRM this club organizes
different discussions.
The club "RRC" includes a great number of polar explorers,
islanders, navigators which had a lot of expedition to
islands, Antarctica (4K1) and (.../mm). Besides it there is
a lot of radioamateurs interested in IOTA and "RRA".
At present this club experiences a great financial problems
for arranging expeditions to Russian islands and other places.
There are wonderful opportunities to visit many islands among
which rare available and desert, which are of great interes-
ting opportunities and suggestions.

This club has many problems with industrial radio apparatus
which is sometimes necessary in expeditions. Now many of
radioamateurs work with home-made apparatus which often break
at unsuitable moment. Sometimes there are rare possibilities
to visit islands of Arctic and Antarctic basin. The club has
a wonderful developed diploma program but financial means are
greatly need for its realization.
Council of "RRC" applies to sponsor, radioamateurs, organiza-
tions, associations, funds and clubs to render any financial
support in carrying out islands expeditions.
We shall also be thankful to all who give us any used (second-
hand) industrial radio apparatus for its further using in dif-
ferent expedition.
In all cases any sponsor will receive a description of events,
photos, slides or videofilm from the participants of DX' pedi-
tions.
The sponsors indicate in their agreement what they want to
have in return for their financial support or apparatus. All
those who will render any support in any cases they'll be
free of charge subscribers of our magazine-report "Russian
Robinson News". "RRC" invites all interested HAMs from diffe-
rent countries of the world to arrange joint expedition to the
islands of Russia.

"RRC" can help to arrange any visit to any island of Russia and
to settle all organization problems. Wait for your suggestions !

RED FLAG...RED FLAG...

Exactly HOW is the house wired for cable in every room? If the
house cable wiring uses one or more of the typical 75ohm cable
spitters and then has the cable termninated to a wall jack in
each room, then each of the wall jacks that do NOT have a TV
plugged into it SHOULD then have a dummy 50ohm terminating plug
pluged in. If that's not the case, then each of the unterminated
wall plug appearances can serve as a point of leakage either into
or from the neighbors TV house wiring.

This is something that the ARRL should help out with. How about coming
up with some suggestions for jammers/unlicensed operators? There are some
that seem to never go away. We as hams have the technology to track them
down pretty easily. At that point, you try
to talk them into getting licensed, show them how cool ham radio is, etc.
If they don't budge, then what?

You log all of the information. Tapes, logs of transmission times, etc.
Then what? Realistically, there isn't a damned thing you can do about
a jammer, and most jammers probably know that. The old "ignore them and
hope they go away" doesn't always work.

I'm not advocating vigilante tactics (in fact, I've personally heard cases
where the vigilante went to jail for slashing tires), I'm just wondering
what others do. Civil suits are out for most of us.
