Considering that 10-codes aren't really followed 100%, what exactly was
the error? (sorry I missed the original post--i think)

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------

Solar activity was low. Region 7629 (S22E02) slowed its
growth and simplified magnetically. It had only a few C-class
subflares during the day. However, it remains the most
       interesting region on the disk.

Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
       low.

The geomagnetic field was generally quiet until midway in
the period. Active to minor storm conditions have prevailed
       since.

STD: A sudden magnetic impulse was observed from Canadian
magnetometers near 12:00 UTC. Geosynchronous satellites also
observed the impulse, which was followed by active levels of
       geomagnetic activity.

Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet to unsettled. The current disturbance
should decline by early 08 December.

STD: Periods of minor storming have been observed over the
middle and high latitude regions just prior to the release of
this report. Additional minor (to major) storming over the
middle and high latitudes will remain possible until
approximately 15:00 UTC on 08 December.

                        Major-Severe Storm 05/05/01

HF propagation conditions were normal over the low and
middle latitude paths. High and polar latitude paths were
generally below-normal with poor propagation conditions
attributed to minor enhanced levels of auroral ionization
through the night-sectors and increased levels of geomagnetic
activity experienced after approximately 12:00 UTC. Poor
conditions are expected to persist over the higher latitude
paths, particularly on night and sunrise-crossing circuits,
for the next 24 hours. Conditions should begin to improve
thereafter. Middle latitude paths will see near-normal
propagation with enhanced levels of fading over night and
       sunrise-crossing paths.

All times associated with x-ray flares (ex. flares which produce
associated x-ray bursts) refer to the begin, max, and end times of the
x-rays. Flares which are not associated with x-ray signatures use the
optical observations to determine the begin, max, and end times.

Subject: Icom IC-745 32 memory mod
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Adding 16 more memories to the Icom IC-745

While installing the Willco memory board in my IC745
I noticed that it uses a 16 position rotary switch to
select the memories. The common lead to the switch
connects to Y5 which is a strobe line from logic board.
Four other contacts connect to the data bus at DB0, DB1,
DB2 and DB3. The switch uses a BCD sequence that selects
0 - F hex.

Other radios, like the Icom R71 and the IC751 use the
same logic board and they have 32 memories. If they
use the same logic then why can't the 745 have 32
memories?

I noticed that the R71 uses two IC's (IC4 and IC5) on
the matrix board that selects the memories using the
same data lines. However, the R71 uses 5 bit counter
(instead of 4). The additional bit connects to DB4.

I experimented with my 745 by connecting a diode from
Y5 to DB4 on the logic board and shure enough, the
memory selector switch selected a new bank of 16
memories.

You can use the PREAMP switch to enable/disable the
"mod" by removing the original preamp leads. A toggle
switch can be mounted on the rear apron and wired the
leads that where removed from the preamp switch. The
the empty preamp switch (which will function as a bank
select switch) should be wired in series with the diode
and the Y5 lead. The other end of the diode goes to DB4.
You can use a 1N914 low power, high speed switching diode.

Because the leads should be as short as possible, I
relocated the preamp switch to the rear apron. You can
find the signals (Y5 & DB4) on the Matrix board at P1
and J11 which is only about 6 inches away from the switch.
Re label the preamp switch "Bank 2".

When the BANK select switch is out or open, memories
1 to 16 are selected. When the button is in, memories
17 to 32 are selected.

With the Willco "no fail memory" and this modification,
I can select all 1024 memories. I have 64 banks with
16 memories in each bank. The mod also gives me access
to the 250 "Hot HF frequencies" that are pre-programmed
in the Willco board.

Greetings -

I'm seriously in the market for a mobile unit and am looking at
the following units -

 Standard C5718DA
 Alinco DR-600T
 Kenwood TM-742A

I would be extremely interested in feedback from the group as to
performance, ease of use, bells & whistles and possible modifications.

If there is an ftp site I should be checking out for archive info
I'd love to hear about it.

Many thanks for any information,

Subject: Mods for ICOM, YAESU and KENWOOD gear
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hi all.

I'm posting this for a friend who is nuts into radio hardware, so
any help would be appreciated! His name is Mark O'Leary, known
in Cork area as EI5EFB (it says here :-)

He's looking for any keyboard or hardware mods for the following
units:

ICOM ICP4ET 70 cm handheld

YAESU FT530 dual band handheld

KENWOOD TH78E ditto

Or maybe someone could point me towards some FTP site that keeps
docs/FAQs on this kind of stuff.

Replies by e-mail please (if no-one else is interested!)

Thanx in adv.

Fergus.

I have been thinking along the same line although I prefer a stand alone
retractable antenna so that it can be hidden out of sight when not in use. With
a dedicated unit, the car radio is safe and the antenna can be tuned for
max performance. I know there are glass mount 2m antenna similar in size to
a cell phone antenna, but I am looking for a electrically retractable whip.

Greg - You must not have been dry behind the ears the first time that
Scratchi letter was published (I cleaned up my first thought). I rather
enjoyed the nostalga of rereading Scratchi and I'll not allow your liberal
attitude to ruin that. Go rain on someone elses parade. Take your
politically correct narrow nose and poke it up the Clinton's backside
instead of sticking it into a part of Amateur Radio history and trying to
make it into something it is not!

AT is assigned to the country of India (VU). The full prefix allocation
is ATA to AWZ. DXers may remember working such stations as AT0N or AT0U
during any of the past DX contests.

It's not considered a "parent prefix" (like VU), so you may not see a
general call listing of it in the Callbook.

If so desired, I could probably operate from India with a callsign such
as NJ1Q/AT, or AT/NJ1Q.

I must be missing something. Could somebody please explain to me how the Scratchi
article was racist? I certainly didn't read anything racist in it. Matter of
fact, I rather liked the article. It took a bit to read the "accent", but then
it took me a while to get into the swing of some of Mark Twain's works for the
same reason. And I identified with the poor fellow's only ending up with 1 out
of 10 of his students, too -- our ratio's a bit better than that, but not by much!

Awwww Shucks Greg...I got it now. I should get real hurt and mad at the
ARRL and Gildersleeve for all them Jeeves cartoons that made fun of us over
fifty, overweight, white, male radio flunkies... Why I'll bet that's why I
am the way I am. A product of politically incorrect amateur radio humor.
Thanks sooo much for your help!!
