You will probably do well to measure the F/D of the reflector and build your
own feed. Pyramidal horn feeds which taper from standard waveguide dimensions
are easy to make from copper clad PC board and copper foil tape (like
stain glass fabricators use). See my series in Feb/Jun/Oct 1988 Ham
Radio Magazine for some details. Your particular reflector my want a different
design but that should get you started. Don't trust information about
feeds in old versions (at least) of the RSGB vhf handbook.

Tee, hee, you may not find unoccupied spectrum around 28.35 MHz.

If "this weekend" is the weekend of the December 11, there are going
to be thousands of stations making a special effort to listen for you.
The ARRL 10m Contest is on! Donno what it will be like with sun
freckles near 100.

Contests are great as field strength meters manned by humans (are
contesters human? :-) Well, binary field strenth meters, that
is. In a contest, you are either 59, or you are "too light to copy" :-).
You can still get a quantitative feel by going more and more QRP
and see how many stations can still hear you. The big guns have
amazingly good ears, I have found.

The more sane Hams will be working the TARA RTTY Sprint this weekend :-).
The really sane ones will be staying away from 10m and the RTTY subbands
altogether.

OK, I'll admit it -- I am totally insane. If time permits, I will be
trying to have fun with both the RTTY (heck, it is only 4 hours anyway)
and the 10m 'tests :-).

ATV news from Sydney

Anyone interested in ATV in Australia might like to know that
the Gladesville Club in Sydney has just finished refurbishing
the TV station VK2TVG to as close to broadcast specs as
possible for an amateur station, with a view to a possible
further satellite test transmission next year. Still to come
are some microwave links to make this happen, these should be
only a few weeks away with a bit of luck. ... promises,
promises, you know the old song, but perhaps this time...

Anyway, we will keep you informed.

Announcing the new QRZ! Windows CDROM

Well, we've finally finished it and there are a bunch of new features.
First off, in addition to the DOS search program, we now have a
Microsoft Windows compatible search engine which adds tons of
new functionality. We now support searches by callsign, name, city,
zip code, street address, and previous callsign. The Canadian callsigns
are also integrated right into the main database.

The windows software allows printing on any Windows installed printer
and provides for editing of search results files - using any editor you
choose.

We've also added a new section containing prerecorded RTTY, AMTOR,
ASCII, and Packet messages for TNC testing. These .WAV files are
SoundBlaster compatible and come in all popular speeds and shifts.

We've also taken the mods database and placed it into hypertext format
which means that you can browse it using only the mouse under windows.
All of the popular text files from buffalo.edu are also hyper-ized.

In addition, we've included the last 10 months of the rec.radio.*
newsgroup articles, along with the usual large batch of shareware.

We have also committed to a quarterly updating schedule which will
mean a new disc every 3 months with the latest FCC data.

As before, we're making a special offer to readers of the rec.radio
newsgroups. To find out how to get your first edition copy of QRZ!
Windows direct from the author, send an e-mail message to:

 info@qrz.com

You'll receive an automatic reply detailing the particulars of the offer.

Also note that we're now on the internet with our own name (qrz.com), and
will be available to answer questions as best we can.

If you wish to contact me directly, just e-mail to flloyd@qrz.com.

73,

The ARRL Handbook can be found at most stores that sell amateur radio
equipment, and of course directly from the ARRL, 225 Main St. Newington
CT. There is a new edition each year. There are a couple of reasons for
that. First and foremost they have to dumb it down to the reading level
of current amateurs. It's currently at about an eighth grade reading
level. And second, the simple CW transmitter construction projects included
become obsolete because the parts are no longer available.

One of the better years for the Handbook is 1962. That's the edition to
which I refer most often. It uses bigger words and more complex sentence
structure, but it should be accessable to someone who was a tenth grader
in 1962, or to current college graduates. It includes more ambitious
construction projects, including SSB transmitters and receivers. It's also
printed and bound using higher quality materials.

You should also look for the various RSGB publications. The technical
quality, writing quality, and binding quality of their publications are
at a much higher level. If you read German or Japanese, their publications
are also at a high level of quality.

Sorry, but you know not whereof you speak.

"Scratchi," as a regular in CQ magazine, was a caricature of an Asian
(specifically Japanese) person used as a foil for various OP-ED
columns. He was depicted in very stereotypical fashion in both the
text and illustration, and always spoke in stereotypical pidgin
English.

If you present the "Scratchi" columns to some Asian folks, they will
probably tell you that they represent just the exact kind of racist
stereotypes against which they've been fighting since the 1800's.

While the ideas expressed in "Scratchi" sometimes had merit, it is
just as well that the mode of expression is now behind us. Let's let
it stay there.

No.

I was quite clear and quite measured in my initial response to Myron's
post.

I became much less measured when confronted with knee-jerk, reactionary
responses which failed to address the issues presented but instead
were written in response to some made-up image which bore little relation
to what was actually being said. And even less measured when confronted
with certain individuals attempts to remain ignorant of what was
actually said. And to continue to engage in and defend racist behavior.

You're so right, Dennis. Zealots who respond to any suggestion that smacks
of social progressivism with cries of "PC! PC!" are part of the problem.
Zealots who start screaming "First Amendment! Oppression! 1984!" if
someone dares to suggest that a writer voluntarily temper his words
in consideration of the feelings of others.

Well, I know *Dennis* doesn't have my password. He clearly hasn't read
my mail.

Wrong again, ace. I tried the reasoned approach. Usually when people end
up shouting at you, it is because you were too damned deaf to hear the
talking. And I didn't use sarcasm. The people whom I described as illiterate,
racist, and reactionary ARE that, in my opinion. I do not use those terms
lightly.

Dennis, if you have experienced racism first-hand, as you claim, why is
it that you continue to defend it?

Greg

Here's a koan: If you have ice-cream I will give you some. If you have none,
