Yes, we do, but I think part of that comes from the FCC's decision several
decades ago to create "a band of frequencies where any citizen can

results of that decision. Sometimes change is BAD.

(Please don't flame if you're an ardent CB'er--we've got lots of fine hams

Otherwise, I think many of the points you make are good ones, and as a VE,

I would assume that in the definitions section of the FCC rules there
would actually be a definition for "these rules". I don't have a copy of

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

I just joined this newsgroup and I have to admit that it has made me very
sad. To anyone with even an inkling of a clue, the Scratchi article
is blatantly racist. I don't think that it was anywhere near the line
between racist and a fringe concern to which only the most die-hard
"PC" person would take offense. While the original article was, in
itself, offensive, what I really can't believe are the responses that it
has gotten: people talking about how it could be a middle aged white
man with a spelling problem or a Cajun person (as if it's o.k. to
mock Cajun people). Were the minstrel shows of yore white people
who just happened to have had shoe polish on their faces? No, they
were racist people who were lampooning people of African origin.

The whole ``Political Correctness'' movement is an attempt at enumerating
rules of conduct for people who a) don't know history and are therefore
bound to repeat its mistakes and b) who were never taught the difference
between right and wrong.

To those who weren't involved in this mess and are interested in amateur
radio: I'm sorry for continuing the flame war.

To those who intend to flame me until I'm a charred biscuit: I've already
left this newsgroup and I have a wonderful mail filter (thanks to Chip
Salzenberg) that lets me dump junk e-mail down the tubes, AND I'm already a
charred biscuit.

Good day, good life.

that those of us who had a tech liscense were grandfathered into
the new system, i.e. we can still take take the 13wpm test and be
upgraded. However, when I recently received a new liscense in the
mail (just a replacement for the old one, which was lost), there
was no designation that I could see that would set my lisense
apart from any other (newer) tech liscense. Can someone shed
some light on the new regulations?

Quite right, you are grandfathered. It is not a designation on the
license; you have to be able to prove to the examiners that you were
licenced before whatever date in 1987 the new rules went into effect.
This is most commonly done with an original license bearing the
earlier date, but if you lost yours you may be able to substitute an
entry in an old callbook as proof. Or maybe you can get the FCC to
certify that you were a technician as of such-and-such a date.

You might try one of the outdoor or mountaineering supply stores.
Personally I prefer tower climbing to rock climbing. If your hook is large
enough you can slide out on cross-arms to check antenna connections. The
hook should be a closed loop when locked.

Like what? This 'let the proper authorities handle it' stuff is what
got us into the mess we're in today. (Discussions on the relation between
crime and punishment in the U.S. can be held in the appropriate talk.*
group.)

Also, consider it as a practical matter. You can hire lawyers ($$$!!!) to
try to drag the schmuck into court (send more $$$) and defend yourselves
against the inevitable countersuit(s) (yes, more $$$). Of course any
eventual decision in your favor will be ignored by the QRMer. What then?
More lawyers?

Or invest in a few of Palladin Press's classic 'revenge' books. Something
like "I Hate You" or "Getting Even" should be enough to get the imagination
going. Does poison ivy/oak grow in your area? Does the QRMer have exposed
phone lines? Is the car left parked in the driveway/street overnight?
The possibilities are endless. Have fun...

I don't know. I suggest you contact KFNN in Phoenix and ask. My guess would
be that it would not be available that way, since it is a commercial

It's funny how different people might interpret this. My wife is Russian.
While she has been in the US for almost 15 years and speaks excellent English,
she still has a Russian accent. She has several relatives who have immigrated
over the past couple of years and their English is another story. The image
I pictured while reading the story was of one of these Russian immigrants.
The fact that their English isn't very good doesn't mean they are ignorant
and broken English shouldn't imply ignorance. I thought the story was
amusing. Since I pictured Russians, the acceptance of old technology also
fits in pretty well.

Where will all this PC nonsense end? It's gotten to the point where you can
hardly say anything anymore without offending someone. Lighten up and
get a sense of humor.
