I haven't read the FCC Amateur Radio Regulations in years. I don't even
remember the part number (is it 97?)

Are the regs available by anonymous FTP? Or do I have to buy a copy of
the ARRL License Manual (assuming they are still in it.)

Jeff,

Come on over to the SBS folks. We have a bulletproof feed. People can
bitch, whine and complain about things you post to no avail.

And if someone doesn't like that... awwwww... too bad.

Next Summer, a Ukrainian-flag cruise ship is departing Montreal for outer
banks and St Pierre/Miquelon (French territorial), and return. Some

Assuming permission from the ship's captain, who/what agencies do I need

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------

Solar activity was low by virtue of a single C1/SF flare
in Region 7629 (S22E42) at 04/0117UT. This region was the most
productive of the past 24 hours but the remainder of its flares
were B-class sub faints. This region grew to a DAO over the
past 24 hours while Region 7627 (S18E17) decayed somewhat.
Region 7630 (S10E41) also showed growth and has emerged as a
       CAO spot group.

Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
very low to low for the entire forecast period. Regions 7627,
7629 and 7630 all have fair C-class potential and an outside
chance of an isolated M-class flare.

The geomagnetic field has been at mostly quiet to unsettled
levels for the past 24 hours

Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet to unsettled for the entire forecast
       period.

That's REF for REFlected.

Don't do the latter. Most modern transmitters, aside from HTs, will be
unhappy transmitting into an open connection. What you want to do is
reverse the connections to the meter. Now when you transmit into the
dummy, *without touching the CAL pot*, you should see a reading of
zero in the FWD position and full scale in the REF direction of the
switch. You probably won't however, and that will indicate how far
from perfect the bridge balance is. In typical monimatch meters there's
little you can do about this except note it and subtract the error when
taking readings.

The top scale of the meter is an analog computer that calculates SWR
from the forward and reflected voltages. The 3 to 5 region is in red
because that's the danger zone for many solid state no tune radios.
With the meter in the circuit correctly, not reversed, you put the
switch in FWD, adjust the CAL pot to bring the meter to the SET mark,
flip the switch to REF and read the SWR directly off the top scale.

A true directional wattmeter, such as a Bird, works somewhat differently.
With it, you rotate the sensing slug to the forward direction, transmit
and read the forward power off the meter scale, reverse the element, read
the reverse power off the meter scale, and then consult the chart, or use
the formulas, to calculate SWR. There is no CAL pot. The individual slugs
are calibrated for frequency and power level at the factory.

You ask: 'What is the largest R/C plane built/allowed?'

The largest that I know of, which is now, dead, and may not be the largest
to date was a B-29 scale ship with a 30 foot wingspan... It weighed either
150 or 375 pounds. For some reason, I can't figure out which... It used 4
100cc modified chainsaw engines (made by Quadra) spinning four 39 inch, four
bladed propellers...

You ask: 'What kinda money we talkin?'

Anywahere from $500.00 on up... The B-29 mentioned above must have cost
MANY thousands of dollars... ($10,000 ... $50,000 ... etc) I don't
know... In order to get a bird up in the air as you would like, you must be
looking at a pretty big ship. Something in the 30-40-50 lb range, with all
these computers and sensors and packet radio things... That will cost
easily into the thousands of dollars... Propellers for airplanes like these
cost $15.00 to $40-$80, and when you break them on landings, which WILL
happen, probably, you get to replace... :-(

The big birds generally cost MUCHO dinero...

Hope this helps, and I hope I answered some questions for you...

73 and happy flying...

the HF bands with an antenna and ground tuner? (My antenna tuner is
in a Pi network, if your wondering <HOME BREW, ALSO>). It lists it
for listening to 60, 49, 41, 31, 25, 21, 19, 16, 13, and 11<ewww>

Greg,

Myron should not have to explain intent until true offense, not pc offense,
has been indicated. By your intent we should disallow reproductions of bible
text because they slur certain pc categories.

so it's off to the doublespeak labs with old data! the past must be removed
and made to look like it's never been different than today! (maybe reading
1984 is in order here...) (or is it that today is just like the past and we
pretend that there is no slavery etc.... or do we have to make up stereotypes
to feed a bureaucracy responsible for removing them such that people are
categorized into a class from which there is no possibility of escape - all
white people are racists, all black people are criminals, etc. )

that's basically it...and it's funny too (since i've also done instructing and
have had similar situations happen even to this day..). not everyone speaks
good english.....and how else would you represent this in written text?

i'd suggest spending a day in a library with old mags of the time. i suspect
that by and large we suffer from having too many hams that are too prim and
proper and fear that even seeing a beer will cause one to fail a breath test.

and don't read things like the old Popeye's. Segar had to make him a "blastid
gentlemin" under orders from the syndicate. Disney's "Fantasia" is out as are
a lot of films from the 30's and 40's some might consider "classic".

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

A buddy needs the 11C90 Prescalar Chip for the ARRL Handbook frequency
counter design--it's the -only- thing left he hasn't got. He's checked
what we feel are most of the "usual sources" (Jameco, MCM, etc., etc.)
and they either "don't stock them anymore" or have run out and don't
know if/when they'll ever get more. Even Debco here in town is "fresh
out."

I've given him the "parts list" from the net but does anyone know a
retailer/reseller who -HAS- this in stock, still? Thanks for any
replies direct to me, or you can probably send the info direct to Jim,
N8INP@K8SCH if this fits into the new rules...(-:

Abou a year ago I got three samples of thhe 11C90 for free from
the current manufacturer, National Semiconductor. I suggest calling
a sales office for National or one of their distributors. Sorry
all of mine are spoken for :-)

Try Ramsey Electronics @ 716-924-4560 I believe they use it in their counters.
If no luck, send me a message - I may have some lying around.

Subject: Where do I find gorilla hooks?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

In the past all my tower work has been using a standard
climbing belt. I recently did some tower work with a couple
fellows that used a full body harness and belt. The also had
a couple 3 foot ropes that hooked to the harness with a small
clip at the harness and to the tower with what was called a
"gorilla" hook. This is a large hook that is quite quick and
easy to hook and unhook from the tower.

One of these guys worked for the city and said that the 'official'
policy was that they could not free climb so they used these while
moving on the tower and then belted in when they got to the working
position. I've deciced that I'm going to give this technique a try.
(Mostly due to breaking a wrist after falling 15 feet, and figuring
that 150 feet would be at least 10X as painfull. :-) Fall was from
roof and not tower related.)

I got a good body harness for $70 and now I want a couple of these
3 foot ropes and hooks. A place that advertises in QST sells them
for $39 each. I'm having a hard time spending as much on two of
these as I did on the body harness.

So I would like to find some place to buy just these hooks and
I will attach the ropes. I have checked with two safety supply
stores in town including the place that carried the harness.
No luck so far, so does anyone know where to get these?

They aren't the only organization for hams, and in fact they don't
even count a majority of current amateurs as members. They are the largest
single US ham organization, but don't forget NARA. SERA, AMSAT, TAPR,
probably several DXer groups, and the QCWA are all representative of at
least 5% of US amateurs, as are several of the VEC groups. Yes the ARRL
purports to represent *all* amateurs, but in reality they are mainly
representative of the DXers, contesters, and ARES types who depend on
the ARRL to manage their activities.

ARRL currently has the only full time paid lobbyist in Washington, but it
was not always so. Wayne's old alternate organization had the first paid
lobbyist, and all the other major bodies have at least part time volunteer
representation in Washington. I believe I heard that NARA intends to
register a full time lobbyist too.

The ARRL's attack on SERA is the latest example of their efforts to
stifle other organizations who they think stand in their way. Their
attacks on Wayne have been long standing, and dirty, but that's not
all they've done to try to retain hegemony over amateur radio. Even
inside the ARRL, the old guard has done everything in their power to
stifle dissent among the troops. The directors and the volunteers
form a strong "old boy" network that squelches dissent with a vengence.
That's why there have been attempts at alternative organizations,
reform from within has been nearly impossible. It's mainly the result
of the grim reaper that the ARRL has changed at all in recent years.

Note, I don't think there's a secret cabal controlling the ARRL with
evil intent. It just looks that way sometimes because the old boy
network is so strongly entrenched, and it's members are so fossilized
in their thinking.
