Be honest! I wanna know the facts! >(it broadcasts at 104.1 fm, if that helps at all.) Well if the station is Class A, 3,000 watts, then the field strength at the antenna is 387.3 V/m and 0.43 V/m at your window for a power density of 0.32 mW/cm^2. If the station is a Class B maxiumum power regional station, 100,000 watts, then the field strength at the antenna is 2236 V/m and 2.4 V/m at your window for a power density of 5.38 mW/cm^2. Note that both cases assume your window is centered in the main lobe of the antenna which isn't true unless your window is level with the top of the antenna. So your exposure is less. Field densities decline with the inverse square of distance, so tend to fall rapidly in the near vicinity of the antenna. The OSHA occupational exposure standard is 10 mW/cm^2, so even the worst case is only half the limit. The new ANSI limit is 1 mW/cm^2 for long term exposures, so the Class B case puts you above that limit. However, the radio regulations don't allow spaces regularly occupied by the public to exceed 1 mW/cm^2, so the station certainly is not a Class B. Such stations would normally use a 1000 foot tower that would put the field strength at ground level well inside the most stringent safety standards. So you shouldn't have any concern that you're being exposed to dangerous levels of RF radiation. Note that at this frequency the concern would be for RF heating of tissue, particularly the eyes. The concerns about magnetic fields at very low levels is in another frequency range altogether, the VLF region centered near power line frequencies of 50-60 Hz. The exposure you are getting to those fields is stronger from the power wiring in the walls of your room than from the radio station. Safe levels for protection from RF heating effects are well documented, you can feel sure you're quite safe at power densities of 1 mW/cm^2 or less. The possible risks associated with low level magnetic fields at VLF power line frequencies are much less well documented. Depending on the study, there may, or may not, be a correlation between magnetic field strength at these frequencies and certain diseases. No laboratory work has pointed to a mechanism to claim a cause and effect relationship. So the power wiring in your room *may* be a risk, albeit a tiny one. Research continues. Right. I don't know why people are still arguing about this - I have no qualms in saying "Morse is an international language", although I know that strictly it's not a language - but do we really have to care? Much sloppier writing goes on around us every day (not just on r.r.a.m., but it's hardly exempt). Morsum Magnificat (Aug 93) mentions a Brit newspaper (1943) as reporting that a "dotty American" (tautology?) has his name tattooed on his legs in more than 100 languages, including..... Morse code. That's certainly not an authoritative source, but we all know what it means. So - for those who care about all this, is sign language a language? I doubt it, but nobody's about to change the name. I prefer transverters for all round operation, and prefer multiomde/SSB. A new reasonably priced unit that is new on the market is from: Down East Microwave (see QST for their ad). I believe the transverter runs about $300 and looks nicely constructed, although not super pretty. Good luck either way P.S. My packet BBS address is AK2F@KA2UGQ if you want to reply that way. 73. The "Feel" (user interface) was quit nice but the program was EXTREMELY buggy, especially in tracking states/countries worked, etc. Also, it (obviously) didn't support SAM or other such databases (since they didn't exist then. What you are describing sounds MUCH better. Is there a recent shareware/demo version available (prferably FTP) that I could use to evaluate? If so, where??? BTW, I bought TOTAL HAM at the Va Beach Convention and I am EXTREMELY displeased - it is written in Clipper and OH SOOOO SLOW and the DB format logs are real Disk space HOGS. Also, it cost $50 (Show Special!) and quite frankly, I feel burned... ------------------------------ End of Info-Hams Digest V93 #1428 ****************************** ******************************
