Note that these are FM and therefore limited in range (except via repeaters).

I was able to pick up a pair of Yaesu ft620b's at a hamfest for $300. These
are all solid state, but the are old enough to be am/cw/ssb without fm. They
run about 10 watts pep on ssb.

I have a verticle antenna (about 20db loss when the xmit antenna is
horiz) and I can work some of the local hams with horizontal beams on 6
meters.

I was able to hear WA0KBZ last meek. He is in Cuba, Missouri
and I am in Philadelphia (about 1200 miles). He was using 10 watts and
6 element beam. I was using 10 watts and a dipole. He could not hear
me. :-( This was, of course the day before I put up the antenna. It was
sitting in the box at the time.

With 10 watts and beam you should be able to work 100 miles or so with no
problem. If you have an swr meter that works on 6 meters, you might want to
try an old tv beam.

BTW, If you think it is hard to find people to talk to you on 2m ssb, try
6m ssb.

Geoff.

How do you calculate SWR? I have a power meter...and I can measure the forward
and reflected power. How to I take the two values to determine the SWR?

Right now I have forward power of 5 Watts and reflected power of 0.1 Watts,
what SWR would that correspond to?

Jeff,
Jim didn't advocate an expenditure of budget in any real sense. He
and I feel some well placed phone calls and a written press release can
make a large stink in the San Diego community. If you don't think Public
Opinion counts look at the grief Janet Reno puts up with. This doesn't
require a major effort, just a few calls. The time spent in expressing
the opinion of hams around the country (from what I read on the original
thread most hams felt it was a stupid act) would be well spent. But
maybe a PUBLIC statement might be a bit strong from a national
organization.

I have noticed that my FT530 receives some of our local repeaters when it
is tuned slightly off of the known freq. For example the 145.23 may come
in a little better at 145.225 and 145.235. Any ideas??

Asked recently if Heath was still providing 10-meter-modification

I got this by stepping through the telephone tree accessible

Subject: Is my Kenwood TH78 dead?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

There is a warning on some of the rig mod bulletin boards about
this. The problem is that pins on the back side of the PCB that
is mounted on the front half of the TH78 can come into contact
with the volume control housings mounted on the PCB on the other half
of the unit. My radio had this problem until I put electrical tape
across these housings. Symptoms were: Display blanking momentarily
and the unit power cycling, sometimes causing memory erase, when
pressure was applied to the front of the unit or to the volume controls.
I originally thought that it was a loose battery connection, until I read
the message on the bulletin board.

Open up the radio and you will see what I mean, if the above
explanation is confusing (I just reread it, and it confused me). Believe
me, the fix is simple and it works.

Just a quick note. Peace Officers(i.e. county sheriffs, municipal
police officers, etc.) can make arrest for Federal offenses. Case law will
prove up this point. The offender and evidence are then turned over to the
Justice Department for prosecution. Additionally, property can be
confiscated without criminal charges being filed. It's done legally every
day.

Look at the w2a. The receiver coverage is the same, but since there is no
fm/am switch, the choice is fixed by the factory. This prevents you from
listening to your favorite FM broadcast station :-(

You only have one antenna instead of 2 (throw away ICOM's and get a
Larson or similar) and you get 2m/440 xmit too.

As for frequency coverage, I have received aircraft on the 108-136 band,
and 902 mhz band repeaters (there is one at about 925 around here).

A friend has received his fire company on about 46mhz on one, but I have never
heard anything on 6 meters on mine.

Note that a "mod" has to be performed to open the receiver and that the
coverage is NOT CONTINUOUS.

Now that has been said to appease the legal people, the mod is via keyboard
and the coverage is about 40mhz to 300mhz on 2 meters and 300 to 9?? on
the 440 side.

I do not know the origin but when I was in the Army (10 years ago) our
Radio teletype vans were always refered to as RATT RIGS and the operators

You could verbally *spell* the words to the person and their language centers
would be active too, but that doesn't mean that spelling is a language.
It's the natural language *words* being spelled that are units of language
(when coupled with grammatical structure). Stepping back one level further
to an aural encoding of the alphabet used to spell words, Morse is certainly
even further divorced from language.

Before my time. I didn't start working in broadcast until 1964. Another
maybe interesting bit of trivia, however. There was one AM station in
the US that was authorized to run 500,000 watts in case of emergencies.
It's a Cincinnati station, WLW, whose monster tower is north of the city
on the right of I-75 as you're heading to Dayton. A former co-worker was
a transmitter engineer there, and had some great pictures of the transmitter
plant. Seems the government wanted an alternative to CONELRAD where they
could blanket the country, at night one assumes, with a single transmitter.
The PA tubes are taller than a man.

He should have gone out and bought the most beat-up falling-apart old
used HT he could find, and given them that...
