Anybody out there who worked VE3ONT off the moon with their 150Ft dish this
weekend?

I did on 23, with 100W / 0.5 dB at the feed of a 4.5Ft dish.....

Ummm ... not really. DATA is a plural already, the singular being
DATUM. According to my Concise Oxford Dictionary, there is no
distinction between the singular and plural of BAUD. There's no
such thing as "bauds" in there either.

I have come into possession of 3 large 12v gell cells, manufactured by Best
with a part# bata-048. Could someone point me to a good source for
building/buying a charger for these. Also any specs that are available would be
appreciated.

Are they any good? I have been thinking about building a 2 meter
power amp with some plans from a Motorola Application Note. With the
price of a single transistor about a dollar a watt the price on these
kits is attractive.

Kenwood's USA operation is at 2201 East Dominguez Street, P.O. Box 22745,
Long Beach, CA 90801-5745. Their phone is 310-639-9000.

Last time I checked (about 1 year ago) the Amateur Radio Products
salesperson was Maria Lopez. You may talk her out of a manual, but it is
more likely she will refer you to their distributor to buy one.

Parts, service manuals, etc. are available from their distributor, Pacific
Coast Parts in Gardina, CA. Phone orders with Visa/Mastercard:
800-262-1312. I have had excellent service from them, more than I can say
for the Midwest outfit that supports Sansui (but that's another story).

craig -- don't forget to scour the pawn shops. that's where my Yaesu FT727R
and FT109rh turned up (still haven't found the HTX-202...). if someone finds
'em they should discretely contact the cops and let them retrieve the goods
(pawn shop operators hate being caught with stolen property...8) ).

hit up the radio shacks too. one of the guys at one of the stores had had
someone come in asking what the '109 was worth...but i hadn't worked my way
over to the store yet...was there that afternoon and the possible perp was
there in the morning.

i also tried to get the word out to all the various organizations in the area
-- including things like REACT (one of their guys found the 2 recovered rigs),
the pro radio shops, surplus dealers, and such. you never know exactly where
a trail will turn up.

it does depend on how much this stuff is worth to you tho, because it can be a
lot of work....but in my case it yielded 2 rigs and their battery charger so
i'd probably do it again.

Subject: The first repeater on the air
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

A couple of weeks ago I remember a discussion about the first amateur
repeater ever put on the air. Here's something to add to the discussion...

Last month, the guest speaker at our club, the Wellesley (Mass.) ARS, was
Steve Rudin W1WSN. Steve gave a very interesting talk on the history of FM
in amateur radio. He said that there was a FM repeater put on the air in
Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1939 (yes, that's not a typo!), so perhaps that
could be the first repeater. I don't remember the band or callsign used,
unfortunately. Perhaps, as I did, you wonder why and how people used FM in
1939. The motivation for FM was when hams tried to use AM while mobile: the
ignition noise was terrible. The AMers and mobile FMers could still talk to
each other quite easily, by the way, because FM could be slope-detected on
an AM receiver.

Yes, that would work fine for FM to AM, but how did the AM'ers talk to
the FM'ers? Seems if the AM xmitr is good there should be no FM.

Subject: VE3ONT summary
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

                      VE3ONT EME Test : 1993 Summary

During the two weekends of the 1993 A.R.R.L. International EME Competition,
the Toronto VHF Society used the 46-m (150') dish at the Algonquin Radio
Observatory. Here is a summary of our results.

Band QSOs Multipliers

144 235 46
432 246 41
1296 79 29

TOTAL 560 116 = 6,496,000 points

As a non-amateur antenna, VE3ONT's score should not be compared against
that of other stations. The above listing represents one day each on 144
and 1296 MHz and 2 days on 432. The 432 score may be broken down to:
    (first day) 167 * 37
  + (second day) 79 * 4 new ones.

Equipment: 144 & 432 MHz : KW, RHCP helix feeds; 1296 : 100 W, coffee-can
with L/R switching. Power amps and transverters were mounted at the feed.
Feeds were built by Bob Morton (VE3BFM) of Sinclabs Amateur Products
Division. Preamps on 432 and 1296 were made by WD5AGO. Operators: VE2DFO,
VE3ASO, VE3BFM, VE3CRU, VE3DSS, VE3EMS, VE3KDH, VE3VD, and W9IP.

Conditions the first weekend were fair, deteriorating after 1700 UTC
on Sunday. The second weekend, aurora-induced absorption was very bad.
QSB made copying weak 432 MHz stations difficult. 23 cm echos were
extremely loud; we could hear our own echos with << 1 watt output.
However, activity declined to nearly zero after European moonset. We
also listened extensively for the Mars Observer with no result, even
using AF9Y's extraordinary DSP software.

Equipment worked flawlessly the first weekend. During the second week-
end, we had some equipment troubles at about 0900-1100 UTC on 432; at 0400
local time Saturday morning, VE3CRU and had W9IP the pleasure of going up
in the 90' cherry-picker in wind and snow to fix the 432 MHz amplifier.

A large number of EME stations insisted on duplicate QSOs, sometimes
3 or 4 dupes (!). Needless to say, this cut into our ability to work
other stations even once.

Please QSL to VE3ONT (1993 callbook address ONLY) or to VE3ASO, Dennis
Mungham, R.R. 3, Mountain, Ontario K0E 1S0. Color photo-QSLs are being
printed; expect a few weeks delay.

VK2SG RTTY DX Notes for week ending 5 November 1993 (BID RTDX1105)

Looking at the reports being received, indications are that the bands
are going through a change. Solar flux has been quite low and the
forecasts are giving flux below 90 for several days. As result of
this situation together with the CQWW SSB Contest of last week, we had
general poor activity on RTTY.

Our information this week came from ZS5S, 9X5LJ, W2JGR, WB2CJL,
WA1MPB, I5ICY, I5IGQ, IK1HSR, F8XT, SP5AA and NJ0M node of the Twin

I have been told that it is made by Icom, but this was by an R.S.
salesdroid, so I could be wrong.

The recent policy change at Radio Shack to begin charging for the catalogs
has caused quite a bit of resentment. I resented it when I had to pay for
the catalog I use as a sales tool (I work there part-time). However, the
reality is that we have been paying for the catalogs all along. The
catalogs are expensive to produce and the cost of their production had been
part of the cost of the products. Not only did we pay for our own catalogs,
but the tens or hundreds of thousands of catalogs that were taken from the
stores by folks that took them just because they were free. Junk mail and
other "Free" advertising seems to have a very short persistance in most
folks homes, often landing in the trash the same day it's received.

Imagine you worked for a company that published a free catalog. Imagine
that 100,000 of those $3 catalogs were discarded within a week. That's
$300,000 ... a third of a million dollars that is spent on providing
substance for landfills. Given the recent economic climate where every
expenditure is evaluated for it's return on investment would you feel
that free catalogs were a valuable and cost efficient way to use your
companies advertising resources?

Although it's a pretty tough policy, I think the company did the right
thing, albeit an unpopular thing.

Charging for the catalogs reduces the number of catalogs that end
up in landfills a week later. (Why does a boogery faced 7 year old
need a free catalog and why do all his brothers and sisters need their
own catalogs?)

Offering discount coupons that more than offset the price of the
catalog make them an easier sale. (The people that want one and
will use one will pay for the catalog, realizing that the cost will
be offset with their first purchase.)

In the end, fewer catalogs are taken and those that are taken are taken
by folks that will keep them on their bookshelves longer. The cost of
publishing catalogs is still covered by the company through the discount
coupons, but the total cost is MUCH lower.

Anyhow, that's two cents worth from someone on the other side of the
counter.
