The DXCC desk reported a while back that he is real, has no documentation,
and won't disclose his address to anyone but his QSL manager. QSL cards
are very slow to come from his manager. But right now the cards aren't
good for credit anyway.

Not true as of a few months ago. Call plates cost $15 up front with the
application then an additional $5 per year above the registration fee. Be sure
you get the correct form, tho.

Subject: FITEX Manual wanted
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Hello,

My friend Ron (W3TU) has a FITEX Corp model UDT 170 interface for
ASCII, RTTY, and CW. He is looking for an operator's and/or service
manual for it. The unit has stamped on top "Universal Data Transceiver",
but obviously is a interface of some type. If you can help him, he will
either copy the manual(s) or pay reasonable charges for a copy. Please
contact him direct at (302) 834-9575 after 19:30Z.

Thanks,

Actually most HT's these days include all that standard. Why spend $250 for
a 2m mono band RS HT and then another $250 (?) for a monband 440 RS HT when
for way less that $500 you can get quality dual banders? My FT530 has no
optional extras and the total price was $429. All of those features you
mention plus a hell of a lot more are included.

Anyone in the market for a monoband HT should really consider if one band
is worth just a few bucks less than 2 bands. Recently I even saw an IC24AT
(dual band ICOM) in the .swap newsgroup for $275.

It may not have been the first, but you will have to go some to beat
K6MYK's AM repeater in LA. I used it in the early 60's.

SB SAREX @ AMSAT $STS-58.025
SAREX Keps & Update: 10/28

Thursday 10/28/93 @ 08:00 UTC

The last school group contact was completed yesterday. The Portsmouth HS
in Portsmouth, New Hampshire had a telebridge contact using stations in
California (Ralph Warner, N6MNN) and Texas (Bob Douglas, W5GEL). The
students asked 5 questions during this bridge contact.

Hams across the U.S. and around the world continue to work the Shuttle
Columbia on both voice and packet. Moreover, the completion of school
group contacts has cleared several school backup passes for possible
general QSO opportunities. While the SAREX Working Group cannot fully
guarantee availability, there is a high probability that the STS-58 crew
will be ready to take general calls over the continental U.S. on these
passes. Two of these "scheduled" passes remain. These include orbit
178 at MET 11 days 1 hour 42 minutes (10/29 at 16:35 UTC) and orbit 192
at MET 11 days 22 hours and 29 minutes (10/30 at 13:22 UTC). Please note
that the astronauts operated voice during yesterday's "scheduled" pass
which occurred on 10/27 at 14:59 UTC (Orbit 145). Also note that hams on
the ground heard or worked the Shuttle Columbia crew on several other orbits
yesterday.

Element set GSFC-031, generated by Ron Parise, WA4SIR, is the official SAREX
set for today. Please note that there is only a six second difference
between element set GSFC-025 (released two days ago) and element set GSFC-
031.

Subject: Standard Radio Repair Experience
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Last Sunday at a public service event, I noticed that my Standard C558A
portable was having intermitent receive (and transmit) problems. In
addition, I noticed that the antenna connector was loose. The BNC was a
flanged connector, with two tiny screws fastening it to the rear half of
the metal case. Tightening the screws had no effect. Upon further
inspection, I discovered that the case was broken around the connector and
that the center conductor was disconnected from the BNC. I could solder
the connector back, but part of the case was broken and there was no way to
securely mount it. Checking the warranty, I found that it was one year.
Checking my receipt, I found that I had owned the radio about three weeks
longer than one year. I called Standard Radio to get return authorization
and the mailing address. On Monday afternoon, I mailed the radio out 2nd
day. On Thursday evening (the repair shop has evening hours), I called to
find out the expected bad new$, only to find out that the radio had already
been repaired and sent back to me, no charge! I received the radio back in
less than one week, better than new. I say better than new because if
there are any 558 owners out there, they know that the battery does not fit
onto the radio very securely. With the new rear case, both my OEM battery
and my aftermarket battery fit securely. I am very pleased with the
service that I received from Standard and wanted to share it with the net.
We often hear of bad service stories and I wanted to relate a good one for
a change.

Me too! What's the price for the mem exp on you side? And the HT itself?
the TH-78A HTs are sold approx. US$400 in HK. I really love it.

University of Warwick Amateur Radio Society.
    --------------------------------------------

For some time now I have been considering restarting the U of W
Amateur Radio society. It would be of interest not only to licensed Radio
Amateurs but to anyone with an interest in wireless communication (shortwave
broadcast, datacomms etc.) and probably those who are simply interested in
general electronics. Obviously, the kind of activities undertaken would depend
on members interests, but would no-doubt include lots of beer drinking 8-)
It appears that there is a limited amount of equipment belonging to the old ARS
(which collapsed a few years ago) which might be reclaimed by the new club.

To start the society, we need 30 signatures of founder members,
so I need to have an idea of how many people are interested before
deciding whether to take the idea any further. I know there are several
licensed radio amateurs on campus, so finding 30 signatories may not be
as difficult as it sounds.

For further information, or to register your interest, please
EMAIL me at the address below, put a note in my pigeon hole (2nd year
Eng. Elec.) or phone me on 0926 428651.

It would also be interesting to swap notes with members of the old
ARS even if they don't want to be involved in the new one (I guess most of
you will be post-grads by now.)

Thanks,

 Rob.

I didn't save any of the articles in this thread, and the ones I'm thinking of
have expired here, sorry. Perhaps what I saw was not a specification of an
actual LARC demand, but someone's interpretation of what it would take to
satisfy what LARC says it is demanding, which among other things are an effort
by ARRL to repair the "damage" that has been done to LARC by ARRL's refusing
their ad back when ARRL was still refusing it.
