Does anyone know about the runner who died after/during the Marine Corps
Marathon? I heard a rumor and I am just wondering if it is true.

That's almost a fact! If you're a General or above and have
the capability to support HF in your vehicle, i.e. wiring harness
in the cab, coax to the an antenna support, antenna support in place,
then you are entitled, by Alaska law, to free call sign plates.

The law was established by the Alaska legislature shortly after
the 1964 Earthquake during which the only mode of communications
in and out of Anchorage was HF ham radio.

VHF and UHF are very popular. They have almost as many repeaters
as some of the big cities in the lower 48 plus extensive packet
networks.

Is the full specification for AX.25 available on the net? Is the description
of AX.25 in the ARRL Handbook adequate for writing PAD software?

I always heard that a baud was a change from one state to another on
an analog data circuit; so, more than one such change would be so many
bauds. On the other hand, one doesn't say WPMs when words per minute
is being discussed, the plural of WPM is WPM.

Funny li'l language we have here!

And ARRL in-house style is "bit/s" (from the IEEE?). We also use "mi/h"
instead of MPH.

Subject: ICOM 24AT problem **HELP**
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

I am having trouble with my ICOM 24AT HT...

I turned it on last week, and nothing happened. Nope, it wasn't the battery,
I tried my external source...

There was some static (noise) coming out, but the display was dead, and
it wouldn't transmit, etc.

I used the reset sequence, the FN key and CLR + light, and it came back
to life, and appears to work, mostly...

but when I try to type in a frequency number, it only allows me to
enter the 3rd digit! i.e. if the display reads 144.100, and I type 152,
the display will read 141.52 ...

Is it in some silly mode that I can easily get out of, or is it
hosed?

Thanks,
Joe Wetstein, KA3VJY

I'm uploading a file, BUG.ZIP, in response to David's (bogus@santafe.edu)
request for some information on bugging frequencies in issue 1276. Please give
the credit to the original source, and publish it for the benefit of all
readers if you feel it is useful.

On a different topic, we have a cellular surveillance interface that may be of
interest to those of your readers that are also scanner enthusiasts. We would
be pleased to send them an e-mail product brochure upon receipt of their
request.

SB SAREX @ AMSAT $STS-58.026
SAREX Keps & Update 10/28

Thursday 10/29/93 @ 01:00 UTC

All scheduled SAREX school and personal contacts are complete. This
mission was, by far, the most successful from a school group success
standpoint. Only 2 school group and 1 personal contacts had to be repeated.
The probability of a successful school contact on the first attempt was
nearly 90% for this mission. During previous missions, our success rate
was between 66-75% The majority of the schools had horizon to horizon
contacts and many schools had 10 or more questions answered. The SAREX
Working Group wishes to thank the school group volunteers for their
outstanding efforts, the AMSAT technical mentors who coached the schools
prior to the contact, and those who helped in the Mission Control Customer
Support room; particularly John Nickel, WD5EEV, and Karen Nickel, WD5EEU.

Because all scheduled SAREX activities are now complete, several additional
general QSO opportunities are now available. While the SAREX Working Group
cannot fully guarantee that the crew will be operating, there is a high
probability that the STS-58 astronauts will be ready to take general calls
over the continental U.S. on these passes. A total of FOUR "scheduled"
passes are now available. The two mentioned in previous bulletins include
orbit 178 at MET 11 days 1 hour 42 minutes (10/29 at 16:35 UTC) and orbit 192
at MET 11 days 22 hours and 29 minutes (10/30 at 13:22 UTC). In addition,
two other "scheduled" passes are now available. These include a pass on
orbit 176 at MET 10 days 22 hours 18 minutes (10/28 at 13:11 UTC) and a
pass on orbit 193 at MET 12 days 0 hours 6 minutes (10/30 at 14:49 UTC).
Please note that many hams on the ground heard or worked the Shuttle Columbia
crew on several orbits today.

Element set GSFC-031, generated by Ron Parise, WA4SIR, will continue to be
the official SAREX element set. When last checked by Gil Carman, WA5NOM,
there was less than a one second difference between the orbiter state vector
and element set GSFC-031.

If this ever comes to pass, perhaps they should let the morris fans
have the calls with the short letters, or those that have a nice
rhythm (ESE et al). You could be tested on morris speed, and all
those who can copy 40+ wpm get to choose the calls with lots of Es,
for 30-40 wpm you get those with Is etc. No-coders, including the
Extras who can't recognize their own calls at 10 wpm, get the calls
that have Q, Y, J and all the other junk. Simple.

I dunno how much I'd pay to get a call like AA5EEE, but I'd certainly
pay something not to get WJ0QJY.

AMATEUR RADIO EXAMINATION OPPORTUNITIES

*****************************************************************

Special Note: Amateur Radio licenses usually arrive between 8 and
10 weeks after the test session. The FCC considers their
processing time to be 90 days--from the date they receive the
application. The FCC usually receives the application one
to two weeks after the test session (once the VE Team and the
coordinating VEC have completed their processing).

Note: Codeless Technician to Technician w/HF upgraders (who pass a
Morse code test) will not receive a new license from the FCC.
The existing Technician license plus the CSCE conveying the Morse
code test credit is the only documentation issued for use of
    the additional HF privileges.

*****************************************************************

The following test session information is provided by the
ARRL/VEC for the upcoming six to eight week period. For
further information, please contact the test session CONTACT
PERSON at the telephone number provided. If necessary, you
may contact the ARRL/VEC at 203-666-1541 x282 for additional
information. Electronic mail may be forwarded to the ARRL/VEC
via USENET at "bjahnke@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
MCI ID: 215-5052.

Although the test session information presented here does
not indicate whether walk-ins are accepted or not, most test
sessions do allow walk-ins. We encourage you, however, to
always contact the CONTACT PERSON at the telephone number
provided so that the VE Team is aware that you be attending
the test session.

STILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAM?

If you would like information on how to become licensed; or
how to locate Amateur Radio clubs, instructors, licensing
classes and/or Novice examiners in your area; please contact
the ARRL Educational Activities Department (EAD) at 203-666-
1541 x219. The EAD can also provide information on
recommended study materials. Electronic mail may be forwarded
to the ARRL EAD via USENET at "rwhite@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
MCI ID: 215-5052.

This isn't a particularly useful rule. Anyone can get a mailing address
wherever they want.

Aren't #4 and #8 contradictory?

Why two months? Why not a term to be decided by the FCC and the applicant?

Why not 2x1?

Isn't this the same as making them renewable?

Subject: Was 'Vanity' Call Signs, now paying for call signs
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Doug,
I don't think it will be a problem. As we all are assuming, the fee
will only be charged for people wanting to get a vanity callsign i.e. a
short and/or cute call for DX and contest work... or even just for the
hell of it.
