It may not be that easy. Some units, like the Radio Shack multi-channel
model, cannot be modified. The cheapo kiddie HTs can probably
be modified this way, but they are AM, and have a less-than-stellar
receiver. If it's for a college project, fine, but don't expect to
hit repeaters with them.

Baud is essentially the frequency of the data signal. This is NOT the
same as the carrier frequency. With FSK modulation, 1 bit is transmitted
for each change in the data signal so in this case, Baud = bps.

The more sophisticated modems encode multiple bits per baud via phase
encoding and other methods. Your 9600 bps modem communicates at 2400
baud, but can send 4 bits per baud yielding 9600 bps. (14.4K send
6 bits per baud)

Most people mistakenly equate baud 1:1 with bps. I dunno what ARRL
folks do.

If your unit is only 6 months old, then the hardware problem should
have been fixed already, unless the store had one in stock from
two or three years ago and sold it to you. And I believe that the
hardware mod was for interference caused by the 162 MHz weather
stations.

The problems you mention are typical of Ft-470s and other HTs with
extended receive. You get something (more receive frequencies),
you give up something. (selectivity)

On the other hand, LARC's credibility is seriously in doubt, since they
keep shouting the word 'discrmination' over and over again, like some
sort of broken record. Yet when one of us says 'okay, other than the
ad, what discrimination?' LARC says nothing. I at first thought that
Mseers. Bledsoe and Kelly had missed the question. However, I'm now
beginning to believe that LARC is also, to paraphrase, refusing to
engage in any dialoge. I've seen Mr. Bledsoe post essentially the same
response several times now, and never have I seen an enumeration of what
this generic 'discrimination' is. Refusing dialogue with someonee you find
uncooperative may be a perfectly legitimate response, in this case. It is
not in and of itself, a grievance.

Don, some of your words do not support the position you state.

Subject: Help Get Started as HAM
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

Well, As the sub says, I'm new to ham radio and would like someone to direct me
to the proper FAQ or book that will tell me about the various areas of ham
radio such as packet, UHF, repeaters, DTMF, etc. (I don't REALLY know what all
that stuff means yet). I understand electronics fairly well, but can't find
any UP-TO-DATE info on what ham radio offers.

Anyone who wishes , please help.

USED HF & 6m RIG PRICE SURVEY
                  26 Oct 1993 Version

Here is a list of actual transactions involving buying
and selling of used HF amateur radios.

I have absolutely no affiliation with any ham-radio-related
business. Rigs are sorted by maker, model, and price. All
transactions were made within the past three years. I welcome
any additional responses; please indicate maker and model of
your used rig, date bought/sold, how sold (Usenet, retailer,
on air, private, etc.), price, condition, and any accessories
or options. This survey is limited to used HF and 6m rigs only.
For prices on new rigs, consult the AES catalog, or call a
ham retailer for a quote.

Subject: Need Manual for HP-2382A Terminal
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

I have an opportunity to acquire a HP-2382A Terminal that would be usefull
for use with packet radio. No manual is available and there is a good
sized collection of dip switches on the back of the display to contend
with. Can anyone out there in net-land find a copy of the users manual?

Subject: Radio Shack HTs
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

I am a soon-to-be-licensed ham, and I was looking at the HTs in Radio
Shack today (2m and 70cm bands). Does anyone have any opinions of the
quality of these radios for the price ($249-299)? Does anyone know who
manufactures them for R.S.? Any opinions etc would be appreciated by
e-mail to cravitma@cps.msu.edu, or posted here. Thanks.

It has to be recalibrated in Metric watts.
