Some units, like the Radio Shack multi-channel model, cannot be modified. The cheapo kiddie HTs can probably be modified this way, but they are AM, and have a less-than-stellar receiver. If it's for a college project, fine, but don't expect to hit repeaters with them. ------------------------------ Date: 26 Oct 93 21:57:59 GMT From: rtech!ingres!kerry@decwrl.dec.com Subject: BAUD VS BAUDS To: info-hams@ucsd.edu In article <2ajofp$stp@msuinfo.cl.msu.edu> cravitma@pacific.uucp (Matthew B Cravit) writes: >>IS THE TERM BAUD LIKE MOST PEOPLE USE OR IS IT BAUDS LIKE THE ARRL FOLKS >>USE? >>Roy > >As I have always used it (as a computer person soon to hopefully be a >technician-class ham), I have always said "baud" as a synonym for >"bps" or bits-per-second. With FSK modulation, 1 bit is transmitted for each change in the data signal so in this case, Baud = bps. The more sophisticated modems encode multiple bits per baud via phase encoding and other methods. Your 9600 bps modem communicates at 2400 baud, but can send 4 bits per baud yielding 9600 bps. (14.4K send 6 bits per baud) Most people mistakenly equate baud 1:1 with bps. I dunno what ARRL folks do. ------------------------------ Date: 26 Oct 93 20:25:29 GMT From: swrinde!cs.utexas.edu!math.ohio-state.edu!howland.reston.ans.net!spool.mu.edu!olivea!gossip.pyramid.com!pyramid!infmx!infmx!randall@network.ucsd.edu Subject: FT-470 Intermod problems To: info-hams@ucsd.edu kayd@prism.CS.ORST.EDU (Kayd) writes: >I have an FT-470 that is about 6 months old and I'm having intermod problems >when I have both 2m and 70cm receive turned on. Yet when one of us says 'okay, other than the ad, what discrimination?' LARC says nothing. I at first thought that Mseers. Bledsoe and Kelly had missed the question. However, I'm now beginning to believe that LARC is also, to paraphrase, refusing to engage in any dialoge. I've seen Mr. Bledsoe post essentially the same response several times now, and never have I seen an enumeration of what this generic 'discrimination' is. No manual is available and there is a good sized collection of dip switches on the back of the display to contend with. Can anyone out there in net-land find a copy of the users manual? Does anyone have any opinions of the quality of these radios for the price ($249-299)? Does anyone know who manufactures them for R.S.? Any opinions etc would be appreciated by e-mail to cravitma@cps.msu.edu, or posted here.
