This has always been one of my "favorite" topics, i.e. it really
torques me off that the good ol' US of A is, I think, the ONLY
nation in world where one cannot get a special callsign of any
kind. Ridiculous!

I think the FCC should sell off some calls in a lottery. How much
would someone be willing to pay for W6DX? How about for Don
Wallace's call, W6AM? $1000 or more? I'd bet on it!

But seriously folks, maintaining the ham radio callsign database,
including custom callsigns, is a trivially simple job that the
FCC can easily do, even with reduced staff. Someone just has to
get their attention. This job should have been turned over to the
ARRL years ago along with the testing. If it costs $15 to process
a callsign application, then charge it!

Is there a glimmer of hope on the horizon in this area, or is this
another round of speculation?

As the FCC is bound by ITU rules, one assumes that vanity calls must also
conform to the ITU allocation rules (ie: K, N, W for USA), so the IH8DX example
wouldn't be applicable. However, it does raise an interesting dilemma as to how
my logging program is going to deal with all this chaos!

(Pity really, I though the U.S. was one of the last sane places left where
prefixes didn't change with the weather conditions!)

DX advice from Jules W2JGR
==========================
Below is a reprint of the opening comments in the RTTY Journal
DX Notes column as written by Jules W2JGR in the September
1993 issue. This is good operating advice.

Jules writes:

It seems that every time a new rare station comes on the air,
an opportunity is provided to bring out the worst in operating
habits. What a pity! Take a recent case. The DX station made a
belated appearance on RTTY due to equipment problems, so the
whole world was perched, waiting to pounce. Propagation
conditions were far from good and copy was marginal in many
areas of the USA.

However, every report was RST 599, giving the DX station false
confidence that he was being well heard, when in fact he was
more like RST 349. He therefore neglected to repeat the
callsign of the calling station more than once when respond-
ing. And when turning it back, he did not give the callsign at
all.

This resulted in two abuses. Time was wasted when a calling
station asked -- PSE CFM MY CALL --. By that time the DX
station may have already left the frequency, and was trying to
pull out another call from the -- split -- pileup. This then
led to multiple -- insurance contacts -- made on the same band
by many stations, thereby possibly depriving others from at
least one contact.

The DX station is usually equally culpable, giving everyone
599. Why do RTTY operators do this? Lets stop kidding
ourselves, and the DX station, who in most cases, is trying to
satisfy a maximum number of people. If we can get into the
habit of giving true reports, the DX station can adjust his
operating technique to suit the conditions. Rates will improve
and both sides of the QSO will benefit.

The Motorola Maxtrac 900 go's to the ham band without too much work. First changing the two filters in the front end to 915 Mhz (Murata P/N DFC3R915P025BTD ph no 404-684-7821) is the fix for the receiver. Then changing two chip caps in the VCO brings the radio to the ham band. Then if the radio is the trunked version you want to change the Eprom to a FVN4019A conventional firmware. Using Conventional software you will be able to program the radio just disreguard the warning that you have entered an unautho

rized freq.

I have a 900 Maxtrac in my truck and it works well with the above mods.

WorldRadio and the W5YI report both carry callsign reports which include
some of the smaller areas. They don't include them all, however; there are
some areas listed in the DX list that I've never seen reported, like
Guantanamo Bay.

Subject: List of CEPT countries?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

In article <jfhCFHLCA.EBG@netcom.com> jfh@netcom.com (Jack Hamilton) writes:

>Does anyone have a list of countries which honor CEPT licenses?

Here's a list I found in our national amateur radio magazine. It lists
all countries in which Finnish CEPT licence is valid. I don't see why
the list should look different for other countries CEPT licences.

Germany DL/DC
Spain EA/EB
Ireland EI
France F
Guadeloupe FG
French Guyana FY
Martinique FM
Reunion FR
St Pierre & Miquelon FP
Mayotte FH
New Caledonia FK
French Antarctic FT
Wallis & Futuna FW
St Martin FJ
England G
Isle of Man GD
Northern Ireland GI
Jersey GJ
Scotland GM
Guernsey GU
Wales GW
Hungary HA/HG
Switzerland HB9
Liechtenstein HB0
Italy IK/IW
Norway LA
Luxemburg LX
Austria OE
Czech Rep. OK
Belgium ON
Denmark OZ
Greenland OX
Faeroe Is OY
Netherlands PA
Sweden SM
New Zealand ZL

Then there are a few countries in which a CEPT licence is an asset.
Note that not all CEPT member countries accept CEPT amateur licence as
a valid amateur licence.

Does anyone have a list of countries which honor CEPT licenses?

CEPT is a European communications organization (Comite European de Posts at
Telephones, perhaps) which issues amateur radio licenses valid throughout
all member countries. Some non-European countries honor the licenses, but
I don't know which, and I'd like to.

Its interesting to note that Motorola is sueing these people on the
basis that they stole copyrighted Motorola software which allows radios
to be modified, not that they are modifying radio firmware.

Bob,

you misunderstood completely. Yaesu's methods are different for selecting Data
modes. The 990 has 2 different buttons for selecting RTTY and Packet modes. In
each case, you can select which receiver mode to use: in the case of RTTY,
it toggles between USB and LSB, in Packet it toggles between LSB and FM.
The original poster's complaint was that it could not switch to USB in the
packet mode. In all of the data modes, the passband is centered and narrow
filters can be used. With the RTTY button pressed, I/O is via the RTTY jack on
the back of the radio, and with the PACKET button pressed, the PACKET jack
is used. This allows for connection and selection of both FSK and AFSK
inputs to the radio. The design is quite good in this respect.

So, in summary, the FT990 and the TS850 have equivalent capabilities with regard
to FSK for RTTY and the use of narrow filters.

Did anyone ever get a QSL from the Globex operation in Albania (ZA1QA, I think
was the call)? I worked these folks on 80 meters, and would love to get ZA
knocked off my wanted list. I've sent two requests to Globex (plus a number of
$1 bills), but no response. Anybody got any ideas??
