I'm working on simulating an interesting design for an antenna using twin lead, but I need a field pattern simulator which will handle diectrics ( i.e. the insulator separating the wires in the twin lead). I have a simulator called NEC (numerical electromagnetics code) from Lawrence Livermore, but it doesn't explicitly handle dielectrics. If anyone has, or knows where I could get, or knows anyone who knows where I could get, such a peice of software, I would be grateful for the tip. Thanks! To: ham-ant@ucsd.edu I've seen advertisements for this 14ga wire 'rope' for antennas, supposedly stronger than CopperWeld and something you can just tie to the insulators (I assume one still wants to solder). How good is it? What acceleration factor applies so one knows how to adjust length estimates? Thanks. 73 de Kevin, KB9IUA * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kevin L. The SWR would waver but remained about 4:1. All the symptoms of bad feedline (water?). Up we go with new feedline, new N-connectors - same problem. After getting the antenna down, the high SWR was still there. Checking it over, I can't find any shorts or bad connection points. The problem is that I don't really understand the theory of this antenna (multiple co-linear - I think). Any hints as to what to check for would be appreciated (so I can get back on 440). I too had a simular problem a couple of years ago. I installed my antenna up in the spring and it worked fine (no SWR) all summer. About December I started having a problem with high SWR. I too replaced the feed line but it didn't help. After I took the antenna down and dissassembled it I found the problem. I has a 17' hose. The antenna had asorbed water and was soaking wet inside. I then got in contact w/ RF PARTS and talked to them about the problem I shipped it back to them where they checked it out for any dammage to the componets. They informed me that the gasket that is used to assemble the sections had gotten damaged in assembly and water had found it's way in. I would recomend taking it apart and checking for water inside. Also the foam blocks used in keeping the element from banging against the sides will also soak up water so be sure to completely disassemble the unit. You can remove the lower fiberglass section from the base by using the "armstrong" method. Check for any corrosion that has started and clean it up. As an added safety measure I soldered all the connections within the antenna. It's been up 2 wet years since I did the repair and no trouble yet. I would call RF PARTS for any help or recmondations. They were very helpful. - >>>> "There's more ways to skin a cat than stickin' his head in a boot <<<< >>>> jack and jerkin' on his tail", Texas Bix Bender <<<< //// (o o) *-------------------------------------------oOO--(_)--OOo--------* | | | | | Eric Struble Landline: 916.785.8288 | | CPO Engineering Internet: eric@terrapin.rose.hp.com| | Support Materials Org. hp-Snail: MS R10-OL | | Hewlett-Packard RF: N6PYF 146.745- (N6PYF/R) | | U.S.A. I am new to this news group and having just started in swl, I have a question on what type of antenna would be best suited for the receiver I currently have. I purchased a Sony ICF-2010 with the standard features. I am willing to try to build an antenna or would it be cheaper to buy one from a reputable dealer. Which is preferred an active or passive antenna. As you can tell I am a neophyte when it come to this. Also I have plenty of room to string an antenna in my attic. I appreciate any and all responses. What would I have >to do to correct for this size wire? Should, or >should it not be insulateed (the stuff I found had >a thin green plastic on it.) The one gauge wire size change isn't particularly relevant, but the insulation will change the electrical length of the wire by the difference in dielectric constant of the insulation versus air. This is likely to only be a few percent change that can be compensated during tuning. When you substitute components, you should expect to have to do a bit of adjusting to meet performance specs. In fact if you follow directions slavishy, you'll *still* likely have to make some small adjustments, so don't worry about it. Use what you can get, and tune it to resonance by adjusting lengths and spacing.
