I am looking for some 4 conductor shielded wire, suitable for use in a home
weather station. I would prefer 20 to 22ga. Let me know what you have.

I didn't notice any noise when I used the cig plug. I also used 14 gauge wire
w/o any problems. The 580 will put out 5w on 2m with 12V in. Another important
fact to rememeber is that when the external power plug (located on the side of
the rig) is used, the battery is not connected electrically to the radio. So
your car can't charge your battery by using the plug. It's in the manual
somewhere.

Subject: DJ-580 UHF receive ragne
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

hi, guys:

I recently purchase a ALINCO DJ-580, it is a great radio. The quality of audio is great. I have no complaint about this rig.
I got one question here, the menu stated the receive range for UHF is from 430 to 470 Mhz, but what I found is that I can make it from 400 to 520 Mhz. I didn't make any modification on this rig, I don't know this is misinformed on menu? or .....
Any answer will be appreciated!!

PS. I don't have call-sign yet, just pass the test last week.

Hello,
Does anyone have any experience with the iambic Jones Key?
I have only seen pictures of it and have never tried one.
Is it worth its very high price ($135 standard, $160 Brass)?

I am in the market for an iambic key and curious what
people on the net would recomend.

To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I am selling an ICOM IC-229H 50-watt 2mtr mobile radio. The radio is
in excellent condition and the manual and mobile mounting hardware are
new. I am selling because I bought a dual bander for the car and
want to purchase an ICOM IC-W21AT dual bander HT and therefore need
the money.

This radio includes a battery-backed DTMF microphone that contains
DTMF memory storage for phone numbers, etc.

Amateur Electronic Supply (AES) is currently selling this radio for
$480 new. I will sell it for $340.

If interested, please reply via E-Mail.

73,
Bob.

Most of you probably already know this, but the commas in this posted
request serve the same funtion as our decimal points. So they are *not* looking
for XTALs in the GHZ range...

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a Kenwood TS-440S or a Yaesu FT-757GX.
I would be most interested to hear about your experience with either
of them, or even better a comparison between the two.
Also: any alternative suggestions, e.g. how inferior would a TS-140S or
FT-747GX would be?
My main requirement is good RX performance and I also need a computer
interface to store VFO and mode data, and for the remote control
of as many functions as possible.

Many thanks,
              John

Subject: Help with motorola MICOM...
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I outbid someone at our club auction for a motorola MICOM model
L70SCC-1180AM HF ssb rig. I took the silly thing home, and was lucky
to find that I had crystals to get it going on 160, 80 and 40m. Of
course, it's USB only, but I did manage to have 0.5 dozen QSO's on CW.

It seems that the RX sensitivity is down a bit. Can anyone tell me how
to peak the RX? How are the band pass filters selected? Any
info would be appreciated!

2m handheld, circa 1982? through ? Certain production series had LCD
problems (display turned dark), but mine has never done so. The standard
battery pack was 8.4V, 450mAH. The speaker-mic jacks are held in place
by the solder joints on the PCB, so be prepared to resolder if you use
them very much. CTCSS encode adjustment is potentiometer type. TX power
is 300mW/2.5W. Memory 0 is used for "odd" offsets. 73, de KA4GHX

The easiest transceiver that I know of to hack is the Ramsey
FX-440. I have mine under remote control from my PC or a
box with a microcontroller in it.

Subject: Yaesu MH-29 speaker/mike audio levels
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I am posting this because many people wanted a summary of what I found.

(Recall this is regarding low audio modulation levels using a MH-29
mike with an FT-530).

It seems that the source of this problem is a combination of poor
design and poor QC. I was able to demonstrate that a different
unit performed much better and was able to exchange my mike for
a new one. As far as the design problem, it was pointed out
to me (see article below) that Yaesu had neglected to put a hole in
the case for the mike. I have verified this. A bit of exploratory
surgery showed that there were no paths from the backside either.
The mike element is in a sealed chamber!

My suggestion: If you have a problem. Try another unit -- it
worked for me. Otherwise, you may have to resort to the drilling
suggestion as described below. (Warning: I take no responsibility
for the contents of the included article. Caveat hacker.)
