I have ordered (as part of a group purchase) the Yaesu FoxTango
newsletters from IRC. Unfortunately, the 1974 newsletters are no
longer available. I would like to obtain copies of the 1974
newsletters. Does anyone have them? I would be more than happy to
pay for copying charges.

Subject: Drake R-4 Crystal Substitute
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I've recently gotten an R-4B and am quite pleased with its performance
I'd like to extend coverage, however, and don't want to go broke on
crystals. I'm planing to build a substitution box which would be
essentially a coarse frequency synthesizer. Since the range is broad,
I'm planning to start at 50-80 Mhz and heterodyne down to the
necessary frequencies for the preinjection mixing. I'm interested in
any references as to the injection level for the crystal port. Since
it's coupled to the grid of the HS6 premixer I'd guess that necessary
drive levels would be low. Any hints or references on the subject
would be welcome. Thanks.

Subject: Kenwood TR-7800 memory backup?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have recently brought an old Kenwood TR-7800
2m FM-rig. I use it mainly for mobile, and have
+12V DC connected from the car battery. I think
this +12V is used for memory backup as well.

Sometimes rig needs to be disconnected, though, as
I would rather not leave the rig in a parked car
overnight. There are four NiCd cells for memory
backup, but current drain is so high batteries run
out in a matter of days.

NiCd's get charged when rig is connected to power
supply and turned on. But I do not need my rig every
day and would rather not have a big 12V/20A power supply
on just to have +12 on power conenctors to keep memory and
 charge those NiCd's.

There is small 3-pole male connector in the back of the rig
labeled "backup". This is intented for a small power supply,
just a few mA to keep memory. Such power supply is no longer
available and I have no documentation about connectors. I
was thinking of a small supply, if I would only know what
voltage & polarity the pins are... Maybe the connector also
needs to be changed because I haven't found female connector.
(like microphones, have you ever seen same kind of connector
 in two different rigs..).

Any advice will be appreciated. Please post or e-mail.

Their address appears in their ad on page 128 of Feb 1994 QST.

CQ Netters...

A friend just constructed the powersupply described in the
ARRL Handbook page 27-3 in the 1994 book (the page changes
depending on the handbook publishing year)
A few modifications were made in order for the supply to be
25 Ampere able (by using a different power transistor
and a larger transformer).
The supply worked fine, it only dropped it's voltage by
0.1 volts at 25 A. and all seemed fine untill we noticed
something really strange...
While having a TS140S hooked on the power supply, and while
the radio itself was off, when the supply was turned off
the voltage would jump to full voltage (30V+) for a second
or two before the capacitors would discharge...
While trying to simulate the affect with a 25A load (several
automotive lamps) the supply did nothing out of the ordinary
and no such "spike" was detected!
Has anyone seen anything like the above mentioned effect ?

Subject: What's a Motorola MC80 ?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

A friend of mine has a MOTOROLA transceiver and he wonders what it exactly is,
and whether it can be modified for use on perhaps 430 Mhz.

The transceiver type is MC80 and the full typenumber seems to be:
M.:MAD24TSA900AK

Can anyone tell me what this unit is and what we can do with it ?

thanks,

To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have a slightly used, 5 month old Yaesu 990 HF rig. It
contains all manuals (including the optional service manual),
the original box, and original stock accessories.

I have performed the factory modification for general
coverage transmit (easily reversable). The radio is in new condition.

Reason for sale: I find I need the operating features of the
Yaesu 1000 rig, so I need to upgrade.

Price: $1600 including U.P.S. ground shipping.
