If you happen to have an empty battery pack around that you will never use,
there is a good circuit in the '89 ARRL HB, and maybe later, that will
regulate the source voltage down to about 9 or 10 volts, and do a good
job of smoothing out variations, using an inexpensive 1.5 amp regulator

I strongly recommend paying the money and getting the adapter made for the
FT-530. I think the mere fact that they came out with the "adapter" means
that it will fair poorly for the radio if you
simply "plug and play." Remember, the FT-530 runs
a lot more power when plugged in (I think it's about 5 watts) and you will
notice it heating up to the point of being too hot to hold if you are "long

Hello. I am conducting some preliminary market research for a small
business which I plan to start during 94. I am considering offering 2m
amplifier kits. My questions at this point call for a survey of sorts
to determine what features are important and in fact is such a kit
likely to have any appeal.
Please respond via email if you have opinions on the following.
1. Would you consider building a kit amplifier if the performance was
comparable with current market offerings?
2. If yes to question 1, how much savings are required to justify
building a kit versus buying a built amplifier.
3. What features would you most like to have in a kit?
4. Are there any features which current market offerings do not have
that you would like to see in a kit?
5. Do you think use of amplifiers with HTs, particularly for mobile use
would significantly improve your communications?
Thanks in advance for any feedback, and please add any additional info
that you think is appropriate for this research.

Subject: Semi QSK on Atlas 350XL

I am relatively new to amateur radio. Last August I got my Tech+ and
last month I upgraded to Advanced. I've really been interested in HF
CW. I bought an Atlas 350XL at a hamfest a couple of months ago and have
tuned it to work ok, but while transmitting I often get a Vox feedback that
keys the transmitter. No setting of anti-vox, vox gain or delay seems to
prevent this. Also, the semi breakin mode does not work at all. The
manual mentions that some older 350's do not support semi-QSK and that
if you have one to "contact the factory". I can only guess that this
means there is a bug in the design.
Does anyone out there know of the design error and/or what the mod is
to correct it? I have a feeling that my feedback problem is related
to this defect. Any help?

Does anyone out there in net.land know of a way to latch the
lamp on the Yaesu FT-470 in the "on" position, as you can on the FT-530?
It would sure be handy if you could. On the '530, it's F-LAMP, but this
does not appear to work on the '470. Perhaps there's a mod (although
I'm skeptical, if it can't already be done from the keyboard).
Thanks for any suggestions (except the suggestion to buy a 530...I have
one, the '470 is my lovely wife's :-)

The chances are that your FT 5200 is not fatally dead. What may have
happened is that the battery voltage has dropped below one of the
thresholds and the internal micro-processor has locked up.
Try a full hard reset : Put a pin or similar thru' the RESET hole in the
back of the control head. Refit the control head. Press MHz and DVS
whilst switching on.

Actually, the wide Kiwa filter is just a Murata cermaic filter, and so has
about the same insertion loss as the original Sony filter.
The narrow Kiwa filter is actually a filter module, containing at least one
filter and two buffer amps - one on the input, and one on the output.
