I assume you already know this, but in case you don't own the 2SRA yet, let me
say that the receive side of the radio has a 1/8 inch earphone type antenna
connector and not a BNC. If you have an adaptor 1/8" to BNC that won't
make the antenna flop over, I'd like to hear about it.

Wide receive is literal for all this class of radio, they tend to be
very prove to losing the ability to hear an Amateur band signal when
there are strong out-of band signals about. The only cure is having
tight filtering around the amateur band, and this precludes wide range
reception.
You'll not be far wrong if you think of them as a box containing 3
things:
1) a "scanner" with performance that places it at the cheap end of
the scanner market, and less frequency coverage than usual.
2) A reasonable quality amateur band transmitter.
3) An amateur band receiver with only the performance of a cheap
scanner, that is very susceptible to strong unwanted signals.
There are many people who have these and are delighted with them.
Possibly due to being in areas away from non-amateur transmitters, or
perhaps because they don't know what they've missed because they never
heard it....
The Tandy hand-held may now be the only amateur hand-held that has
not seriously compromised its performance as an amateur band radio.
I understand that some hand-helds now have computer game modes. Could
they have been included to give the user something to do while in areas
where blocking is frequent?
Ok, I've got strong opinions in this area, but if scanning was your
prime interest, you probably wouldn't have got a licence.
If you can't hear 'em, you can't work 'em. whoever said it first
is probably long dead, but it is still true. Also don't you just always
lose contact just at a critical point in a talk-in etc.

Two questions folks, is the IC901 <Icoms Multiband mobile with
fiberoptics> still avalible? Is it a good rig? Any problems with it? etc.
Also the FCC opened up some band <cant remember which like 470MHz? for
low wattage at public use <i.e. no license> Do any companys make
handhelds in this range or a HT that can be modded into what ever that
range is. In my understanding of the rules you dont need a license. This
would be ideal for my girlfriend <until she gets her no code ticket> and
I to use while out shopping or caravaning in two different cars..
Id appreciate thoughts on both of the above either public or private..

You are not licensed for ALL GMRS freqs...
You need to specify up to 2 of the main channels and
(using low power) you are authorized to use any of the
interstial channels.

You're probably thinking of GMRS around 460 MHz. The FCC did *not*
recently open this band up to unlicensed use; you need to file a form
570 with $35 for the GMRS license. You are licensed for all GMRS
frequencies when you do this; you do not pay NABER for frequency
selection.
The only unlicensed band, other than Part 15 bands, is 27MHz CB.
Oh, yeah, you aren't permitted by law to use a non-type accepted
radio on GMRS. That means an opened-up ham radio is not legal.

Hi,
I have a 2m FM PLL transceiver model FDK MULTI 800-D. It was manufactured
by Fukuyama Electronics Co., Ltd., Japan.
I'd like to use it for packet radio but I am missing the manual.
Could someone be kind enough to xerox it for me (I'll naturally reimburse
all the expenses). I am particularly interested in the pinout of the
external 24-pin connector identified as 'ACC'.
Moreover this TX is configured for region 1, ie it works only from
144 to 146 Mhz. I know that it is possible to modify it to work from
144 to 148 Mhz, but HOW ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a Motorola Mostar (VHF Hi, presently on 153 MHz) that I need
reprogrammed, and neither the local dealers or the local Motorola
service center have the interface box and the software to do it.
(Some have the software, others have the RIB, and no two will get
together to get the job done. Ugh!)
If anybody out there in netland would be willing to burn a PROM and
mail it to me, please drop me a line. There'd certainly be the cost
of the part plus a few bucks in it for you. (And yes, I know the
receiver needs to be opened up a bit to cover the entire 2m band.)

I have gotten a maximum range of about 500 feet out of my Radio Shaft CB,
but I had to use a catapult to do it.
A friend of mine had better luck using an inner tube from a tractor tire
tied between 2 stumps. Range was easily 800 feet or more.
Another friend was less successful with his attempt at using booster
rockets attached to his old Navaho 23.
I suggest you buy the most expensive CB that they sell.

Steve Whitt mentions a rather detailed (but simple) fix in his book
involving replacing or adding 3 or 4 capacitors in the radio's IF
section. It DOES involve moving a shield and some pretty detailed
solder work so it isn't for the feint of heart or those with limited
soldering experience though!
Has ANYONE reading this group done the mod to see how it performs?
I haven't yet -- and have been trying to see if anyone else has before
I tackle it to see if it really does make a difference. I have been
getting more and more annoyed by the background "rumble" on 49 metres
in the evenings here, and would like to try the mod sometime t see
if it helps.

levels of voltage and current go through the CW key?
Anything where one has to be isolated from it?
I ask cause of the idea of homemade keys and paddles,

I have a Digicom DG800 2 meter HT that is around 10 years old (est.).
It is a synthesized thumbwheel style unit. I would really like to get
my hands on a manual, schematics, or any other info on the unit.
I would like to set the deviation properly, but without the schematic
I have been unsuccessful in locating the adjustment. I will be happy
to pay copy costs, postage, and handling.
The actual manufacturer is unknown and the importer/distributor
no longer exists, but the unit works fine.
