Subject: Bad Ham Company
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

Boy am I upset.. had my first bad experience with a ham company.

I purchased the Cmos superkeyer II from R&R associates. Had it working
and then put it away. took it out about 3 weeks later for a contest. The
keyer went crazy. I checked the circuit.. nothing wrong.. finally got
the chip out of my Idiom Press version and stuck it in the
circuit..worked fine.. seemed it was definetly the chip.

Wrote a long letter and sent the chip back to R&R. Dick had chip for a
long time. .got it back today.. he told me to send it back to Bud
Southard.. no address or anything.. told me to check for a bad soldering
joint.. also gave me the address of Innovative Electronics and told me
to deal with them .. because that is where he gets the chips from..

I bought the kit from R&R.. think they should have done something.

Anyone have a phone # for R&R or know who Bud Southard is.

I think this Dick, is definelty a real .....

Subject: DJ-F1T Buttons Fixed
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

Over the holidays, I found the time to dig into my DJ-F1T in an
attempt to make the PO button work reliably again. No small job--
and not one recommended for the faint of heart! The PO button (and
it's buddies, SCAN, V/M, and CALL, are as deep as you can go inside
a DJ-F1T. Tools needed: jeweler's Phillips screwdriver, needlenose
(to bend the LCD retainer lugs), tweezers to handle those tiny screws,
a smallish soldering iron and desoldering tool (to unsolder the PTT
switch assembly and the speaker).

With all laid bare, I found traces of liquid residue (no doubt Pepsi,
given our tastes) which I cleaned off with alcohol from the suspect
switch contacts (PWB traces which get shorted by a conductive button).

After reassembly, the radio still worked (which was not too certain
for awhile there) and the PO switch is working perfectly now.

quick follow up on R&R associates and the Cmos Super Keyer II.

I got Dick Rathburns number and gave him a call. I re-explained
everything I had said in the letter. The guy has a mouth like a sewer
and sure doesn't want anything to do with any problems.. just told me it
wasn't his problem and I should send the chip to the author of the
original article. I explained I didn't buy the kit from the author, and
didn't even know him and felt the problem should be handled by the
company selling the kits. He didn't have anything nice to say and
continued to use short words.

Well, on the bright side, I have found all the other people I have dealt
with in this hobby to be the opposite.

I'm looking for some comments on window mount antennas; specifically a 2 meter
Antenna Specialties antenna... A friend told me that they do not work too well.

I want to set up my vehicle and avoid drilling holes, so I'm looking at either a
magnetic mount or a coupled through the glass window mount antenna.

Any comments?

Thanks,

I've got 3 of them and I'm quite happy. They don't take too much power (<100W)
and they are fairly narrow, but if you put them on the back window and tilt
them back about 45deg, then you don't have trouble in cement parking lots. Mag
mounts are a pain to take off in a parking lot, and the stress of waving around
in the wind causes the paint to flake on the metal of the roof where the flexing occurs..
My constraints are convenience and beig able to get out at all.
If you want higher powernad further range - then use a 5/8 mag mount - I just
need to hit the repeaters and go shopping in the car.

I bought a mag-mount with a heavy-duty magnet. I don't think it would blow
off in any kind of wind that would leave the car itself undamaged. I think
it's more flexible than a through-the-glass antenna - I used it on someone
else's car last weekend, for example.

If you want to avoid drilling the hole, hire someone else to do it.
Most two way shops will do it for a reasonable charge. The through
glass antennas are no substitute for a properly mounted antenna.

If you're worried about aesthetics, the on glass antennas look
even sillier. If you're worried about resale, just market it as
"cellular ready", a feature. If you've got a power sunroof, well
now you've got an excuse. Your best bet in that case is the Antenna
Specialist *disguise* antenna. It replaces your original entertainment
radio antenna, in the original factory hole, and comes with a duplexer
to allow both radios to work. It's not as good as a Larsen NMO in the
middle of the roof, but it'll beat hell out of through glass antennas.

Magmounts are good expedients for rental cars. Hertz tends to get
a bit testy when you return their cars "cellular ready". :-)
