After seeing the ads and calling to get the fax, the ACE Communications
AR-2500 wide range receiver is looking pretty good, with computer operation
software and an RS-232 port, not to mention the $450 pricetag.
Has anyone out there bought or seen one? I have the tech specs, but how does
it really do? I'm interested in any opinions on the BFO for SSB and how well
that performs, how well it's put together and, of course, any mods.

I had the same problem with 2 F1T's at about the same time, neither one
was used much. It seemed that pressing the buttons very firmly worked
ok, but pressing lightly caused just was you mentioned, each other's
functions, so attempting to change the power would start a scan, etc.
I called Alinco and talked to a tech, and when I mentioned the problem,
he said that he had never heard of it. So I told him to try it right
then a few times, and sure enough, by pressing lightly, he was able
to make it happen on each of the four buttons.
At the time, I was unwilling to send the radio's in for repair due
to the price he quoted me, so I am just living with it. I don't
think that it is dirt, Coke, etc. because it happened to both of
these rarly used radios. I was a bit bummed that Alinco didn't
feel the need to solve the problem.
Let me know if you have any luck solving the problem.

I replaced a 726 with a 736 and have never regretted it. The 726 is
IMHO the easier to operate, but I called cq on 144.200 with the -
offset on one time to many. Luckily I never received any pink slips,
but IMHO it would be poor operating practice to have a rig that I tend
to use that way.
If you are looking for an "everything" rig the 736 is it. It has 4 module
slots instead of 3 and the 440 module is the same as the 430 module (on
the 726 it is not). The only disadvantage of the 736 is that the 726 has
an hf (20-30mHz) option. But if you shop around you can get a decent
used hf rig for the cost of the module. (about $250)
The 726 is also very noisy compared to the 736.

The 726 is probably a better sattelite rig, but you will probably need a
seperate fm rig if you want to work repeaters. One that you can program
the offsets into.
If I only did sat or ssb/cw I would go for a 726. Unfortuantely, I
spend 90% of my on the air time on 2m fm. So for me the 736 was the
better radio.
N.b. the satelite board for the 726 was an option and may not be included
in a particualr rig.

Yes.

New, no. used maybe. There are some dealers that specialize in 726 modules
and may actually have them in stock. Around here there was a flurry of 726
activity as several of us upgraded to 736's within 2 or 3 months. There
were radio's, sat boards and modules everywhere. Now it has died down and I
have not seen a used 726 or module for sale since sept.

I have never heard of such a thing. You will need a terminal node
controller and radio for packet. Any modem should work for connections
to other computers through the phone line.

I don't think this is available. THe shift is different and too many other
standards. It could be done but I have never seen it done.

Ok, I've been a real humbug this year when my wife asks what toy I want
for Xmas. She is now promising to buy me a power tool for more Honey-Do's.
ANYTHING but that. In 73 mag, Icom had to go and put ad for their IC2SRA
2 meter/25-9xxMhz handi-toy. Any reviews been done on this? Better yet,
anybody own one. ANY comments? Please help! I don't want any more house
projects!!!! Yeah, I know I shoulda done this last month......

A lot of my friends are experiencing intermod on the Kenwood 732. Recently, we
conducted a test using the Kenwood 732 & the Icom 2410H connected to the
Diamond 5100m Antenna. The Kenwood continued to have intermod where the Icom
had none what so ever. We found that this was the case in three different
locations using varied antennas including a 5 element quad.
I am not endorsing Icom over Kenwood, since both machines are relatively
expensive. By the way, the Alinco 570 which can be found for under $550.00 had
no intermod at these locations when compared to the Kenwood 732.
I would suggest that you do your homework and look around to see what other
Hams are using in your neighborhood before you purchase a new or used rig.

Love my Yaesu FT2400H. I don't know what intermod is yet, have not heard
it. Using both a Larsen 1/4 and 5/8 whip on the Larsen mag mount (just not
at the same time guys).

Hi there.
Another question regarding the TH-78A/E. The "control panel" seems to be
quite fragile, especially the rubber keys. Did anyone ever experience any
problem with these ? Or is it really hazard-proof ?

That's right, mainly because our repeaters are activated by a 1750 hertz
tone. Whereas overseas it may be different, no ?
