I'm looking for a 2meter/440 all mode radio for satellite work. If you
have one, or know of one, reply here, or phone 708-489-0030.

Subject: Backlit Yaesu mike on an Icom 901?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have a buddy who was using a Yaesu 2400, and recently replaced
it with an Icom 901. He likes the 901, but REALLY wants a backlit mike
for it. We have talked to Icom, and they have no intentions of releasing
such a critter, so we were thinking of making our own. Has anyone tried
to adopt the newer style backlit Yaesu mikes to an Icom radio? Can this
be done? (If so, why the heck won't Icom sell something like it?!?)

Any comments would be appreciated! Send them to me directly. Thanks!

Subject: Help a new guy - dualband HT?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

Well, I got the Tech+ CSCE and waiting for call-letters. In meantime, am lucky
enough to live 30 mi. from AES, and checked it out. Got BURIED in info.

I'm thinking about taking a deep breath and going the route of
a decent, well-featured dual band (144/440) HT. My area is
populated enough for both 2m and 70cm, I am told.

Don't think I want to mount a mobile in car, therefore looking at
going to dualbander HT. I have read literature on Kenwood, Yaesu,
ICOM. No particular budget, just looking for recommendations, and
mostly what to stay away from.

I caught the very tail end of previous posts to this newsgroup on
request similar to mine. Guess I jumped into it a hair too late
to catch it all.

Thanks for any advice nonetheless.

Mike, ( ) <--- space for call letters when they come.

I've had a Quantum battery for about 2 years. I use it with my W2A and
it's worked fine.

I use one for my TH-77A. It is three years old and still going
strong. It is heavy, but great for portable use and those days
when you will be helping with an event all day long. It also is
nice to get the full 5 watts on high power (12v).
The comment about the charging circuitry is correct. These are
lead acid batteries and they use an excellent charging circuit on
them.
Hope this helps.

I have wondered about that. I was about to buy an on-glass dual-band antenna
because a sunroof pretty much precludes center-of-roof mounting, and I saw
that the claimed antenna gain figures for such antennas were quite respectable.
However, assumed that the gain claimed included the loss associated with
the mount. Is this not the case? How much loss is associated with the
on-glass mount, assuming that the inside portion is properly grounded?
