Subject: 2meter/70cm cross-band repeat
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I am considering the purchase of a 2 meter/70cm dual-band
rig with cross-band repeat capability.

Are there "standard" or agreed upon frequencies (other than
the usual simplex freqs) that are preferred for the
cross-band channel? Is cross-banding becomming so popular
that one must be concerned with frequency coordination?

I understand that PL encode on the cross-band channel
can help, as can "password" protection.

Thanks!

Subject: Alaska radio gear
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have a friend that is planning a trip to the Brooks range/Artic Ocean
side of Alaska this summer. He has been asking me about what kind of
radios to get for the trip. They would be used for emergencies and
for contact with their pilots and linking up with different groups of
people that will be joining up with him during the trip. He does not
have a ham license yet, but is starting to work on one. I suggested
getting a marine UHF radio for at least the sea kyaking portion, but
did not know how to advise him further. Does anyone have experience in
this area? What can one legally use up there? What kind of repeaters
(if any) or satilite coverage can be expected? Any suggestions on
RUGGED equipment, modes and frequencies?

Subject: IC-22S help needed
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have this Icom IC-22S hanging around from years ago and
I want to put it to some use. The diode-matrix programmed
frequency synthesizer won't go below 145.8 MHz, and most
of the action here in my new location is below 146. I can
program it below that frequency, but the unit appears not
to function - just like if there are no diodes in that
slot at all.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to extend the frequency
range on this unit, down to say 144?

thanks, clint KC7XX

Subject: IC-27A hum
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have an IC-27A (2m mobile) that emits a terrible hum in the transmitted
audio. This hum is more prevalent on high power, and in the range of transmit
frequencies between 144 and 146MHz. I can also hear this hum on the speaker
(at any operating frequency).

This is *NOT* a 60Hz hum.

I have come to suspect that it may be related to the multiplexing of the
radio's LED display.

Anybody out there experience this? Anyone have a solution?

Thanks.

i have had all of the tnc's you mention (including the bay-pac)... i still
have the dpk-2! it is a semi-clone of the tnc-2, and it does run KISS
mode with the standard rom that comes with it... any software that runs
in a tnc-2 will run in/with the dpk-2... the changes/improvements over
the tnc-2 is much smaller size, has a 9.+ mhz clock and a real baud rate
generator... it will go up to 38.4 kbaud to your terminal... it has the
standard tnc-2 modem disconnect header in case u want to run an external 9600
baud modem with it... my dpk-2 is from the first production run that
drsi made... i have had absolutely no problems with it...

Subject: TS-940s dead, any help?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

Hello!
We have a sad story abt Kenwood ts-940. It has been little
sick allways, but now it's finally total dead! Our station
is located on a little cabin out of a town, and equipments
are stored there without any heating. Sometimes on wintertime
temperature there goes some degrees below 0 C, and ts-940
was quiet when it was swiched on. PLL wasn't locked until
temperature raised to normal and rig was on couple hours.
Last summer it began to do the same, even that temperature
was at least 10 C all time. It took just couple hours with
power swiched on, before the PLL get locked and frequency
was seen instead of dots on the screen.

When the rig finally started to work, it was ok as long as
it had power on. We just get used to that, because no one
was able to fix it (no good Kenwood service on whole country).

Well, just last friday, when we went to station to make things
up for the contest, we found that rig was not going to work
at all. When the rig get warm, it just showed F_LOCK on the screen
and we didn't got it off! Nothing worked, band and mode couldn't
been changed, it didn't receive or x-mit, but the frequency was
on screen instead of dots.

The only way to get F_LOCK off was hold A=B on , while power was
switched on (reset), but it was ok only one second before the
F_LOCK come back on. Then we tried everything and find that if
we hold TF_SET on while resetting the rig, it stays ok as long as
TF_SET-button is kept ON. It received and x-mitted ok, but band
couldn't been changed, and of course nobody could keep his finger
on TF_SET-button while operating contest!

We started to operate contest with our spare rig (ts-440), but after
few hours, its PLL didn't stay locked on upper bands and we had to
find another ts-440. That one was ok entire contest. (I had also my
own IC-735, but it couldn't be used because it needs different
interface to talk with computer.)

So does anyone have any ideas what to do with that TS-940? Any similar
cases anywhere ?

Any help appreciated!

TNX in advance, Pete
OH3MEP

P.S. Just glad that my own rig is Icom!

In the last few weeks, Tokyo Hi-Power has decided to leave the U.S. market.
They will no longer sell anything here. As far as I can tell, from newsline
and other sources, that Orion found out when everyone else did. They are
now a distibutor without a product :-(

This is a shame as I have only heard good things about Tokyo Hi-Power equipment
and planned to buy the 40/15/6m ht when I finaly passed my 13wpm test.

Today I found out that Kenwood has just issued a service bulletin for this
problem on the 742A. Tonight I will get a copy of it. The bulletin lists
the S-meter squelch mode as *one* of the possible ways to trigger this
problem and gives ranges of serial numbers that have the problem. The fix
is to replace two IC's. I'll post full details as soon as I get a copy of
the service bulletin.
