I have two ICOM BP85 12V rechargeable batteries with broken connectors
but good cells. Actually they are clones from "Batteries R Us" or
W&W Associates. If you have a good case but dead cells I would
like to buy it from you.

radio shack also sells radios for use in the gmrs service, ie vhf
mobile uses. they can be used by anyone that will least them repeater
space or they can apply for a specific frequency if it isnt being used,
or use in interant frequency <low power in between standard channels>
if okayed by fcc. dont blame radio shack for its unwillingness to
police the radio bands when they are within their rights to sell the
radios. if you had a handheld you wanted to sell and someone offered
you a thousand dollars, i dont think i would ask to see a license as
long as the buyer was made aware what the requirements were to use the
radio. its a big bad business world out there, anyone wanna buy my
frequency for 1000 dollars? <g>. 73 wb5kxw

It is pretty much user replaceable. Open the radio as if you were
going to install a UT-49/50/51 (RTFM) and the battery will be at the
bottom, it unplugs from a wire.

Try calling one of the battery shops in the back of QST of a
replacment.

Radio System Inc. in Florida makes the PRC-60, which is xtal controlled,
and another PR-??, which is 99 channels synthesized. It is, IMHO, tougher
than the Sabre, and submersible to boot. From what I've heard, it can be
used to chip off ice accretion from the deck of a ship, as well as using
it to subdue unruly "perps". :-) Hate the handmike, though! It's
downright shoddy compared to the transceiver.

It might be half the price of the Sabre if you buy directly from RSI.

The original schematic for the IC22A shows only two connections to the
J-2 accessory jack...Pin 1 = discriminator, Pin 8 = Ground...with a .01
capacitor across pin 1 to 8.....Thats all!

Although in the past several companies made ht's and ht like units that had
fm and ssb, as far as I know the only current production models are the
Yaesu "mark II" series. There is one for 2m (the 290r mark II) one for 430/440
and one for 6 meters.

The units are fairly nice except that the ctcss board is on the bottom of
the main unit and it needs to be exposed to change frequencies. :-(

The radios consist of a portable main unit with a clip on linear amp.
If you remove the linear and clip on the optinal battery pack, you have
a 2.5 watt portable. The linears give you 25 watts on 2m and 10 on 6m/440.

If the battery pack is on, the antenna gets connected to a bnc on the
top/front, if the linear is in place there is an so-239 on the back.
The unit includes a car bracket for use with the linear.

The 2m unit uses less than 4 amps at full power (25w fm) IMHO thats pretty
good.

I have had excelent results with my 290r mk II, and recommend it highly.

Interesting. The most muddy audio I've ever had was from an
Icom R71A, even on headphones. I have a Ten-Tec Omni V and a
Yaesu FT-990, both with their external speakers, and, on phone,
the Omni has a more pronounced muffled audio than the Yaesu.
But, boy, the Omni is _so_ sweet in CW.

Subject : Re: Best 2m handheld?

I too am considering purchasing an HT. My requirements are different
though and more demanding.

I would like to have the following
Dual Band 2m/440 with enough extended range for satellite

The misc features that make a good HT for walking around and use
in a car with an amplifier.

Any additional useful whistles and bells that don't add
significantly to the price.

What would you people recommend?

Please respond via email and I can summarize if needed.
