Speaking of tough HTs, does anyone out there own any
by Azden? I'm considering the AZ-21A 2-meter unit.

They claim mil-spec (MIL-STD-810) reliability.

I also understand it has wide band receive.
So how bad is the intermod? Thanks.

I picked up an SWR meter at a hamfest but don't know how
to read it. It is a Heath AM2 SWR Bridge for HF Bands.
Any information about the quality of the unit, how to use
it, or a manual you don't need anymore (maybe a copy)
 would be appreciated.

 Thanks in advance.

Is the internal battery in the Icom IC-2SAT user replacable or must it be
done by a factory repair center? If it can be done by me, where can I get
one? I apparently ruined this one running it on the cigarette lighter in
my car. How can I run external power and not destroy the "charge memory"

It's less than that if you don't buy all the accessories and/or programming
cables/software. The radio itself is around $1800 for a hi-power Saber III.
At least that's what I paid directly from Motorola.

It's a nice radio. I own a hi-band III and have a county issued uhf II. The
II is an early Saber and has a lot of problems. The III with a newer
processor and software is much better.

As far as ruggedized, I think other Motorola HT's are better. Our department
has a lot of MT1000's that appear (case wise) to withstand a lot more. The
Saber line seems to be a much thinner-wall case material.

: BTW - Most of the Motorola HT's will survive about everything you described
: with the exception of submersion.

And they even have submersible models! (at least for the Saber)

Hi folks,

I just got a spanking new Kenwood TS-50S, and boy is it a beauty!
Even fits under the dash of my compact car...

Searching around the local LLBBS's I found a very simple mod for
full transmit from 1.7 - 30 mhz....

Remove the bottom cover of the TS-50

Locate the PLL board -- it is the pc board on top of the main board,
it has a shield on it's right side.

Locate the only non-surface mounted component on the PLL board --
look near the rear left-hand side of the pll board
(front of radio facing you) and remove the very
obvious diode. You can't miss, there's only one.

Replace cover.

Perform microprocessor reset as described in your manual.

Please -- This mod for use only by persons authorized to use those
frequencies outside of the ham bands - such as MARS, CAP
and such. This radio is not type accepted for commercial
use outside of the ham bands....

Napoleon, I believe the only Ham VHF/UHF SSB portable/batttery powered
gear currently available is made by Yaesu. Check out catalog specs
and prices for the FT-690, FT-290, etc.

If you look long and hard, you might be able to find the older Icom
202, 402 and 502 2 watt QRP rigs, which can be found used for around
200 dollars. The six meter version is a little drifty, but the 2 meter
and 70 cm models are stable, and all three have good recievers. (They
are SSB and CW-- no FM mode.)

Good luck! VHF "hilltopping" is a lot of fun. --Leigh/KM6JE.

When the radio locks up from the S-meter squelch mode, you can't do anything

reconnecting has no impact, either.

Still waiting for information from Kenwood. It still really amazes me that
they haven't tested this radio (and its various Rev chips) more and then expect
people to shell out $700 for the base radio.

Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me. I'll bet that kenwood
is going to lose some long time customers on this deal. Perhaps they'll learn
from the mistake. I know that I have.

 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Damn straight!
I bought my unit from Radio City and after experiencing the first lockup
like you described above I drove 3.5 hours to take it back to them in person.
There was no way I was going to wait while they sent the radio back to Kenwood
for repair. I had only used the radio for 3 hours before it went schizo and I
was rather upset. The techs and Radio City and I figured it was a problem
with the 3rd band unit I installed, so it went back to Kenwood. They swapped
me a new radio and I went happily along my way. I had problems with various
squelch modes as well. The microprocessor squelch was useless. I kept having
to reset it all the time and when you're mobile you don't have time to be
messing with crap like this. S-meter squelch was the only squelch mode I
could tolerate. I called Radio City to complain and got the standard "new
radio, may have glitches" and the "such a wide front end it's bound to have
some selectivity problems" excuses. Fine. I continued to use this radio for
about 3 more weeks and finally decided that I was never going to be happy with
this rig and even though I was looking at a restocking fee in the range of
$100-$200 dollars, I decided it was worth it in the name of happiness. I
packed it up and drive another 3.5 hours up to visit them. When all was said
and done I was told that tentatively they were not going to charge me a
restocking fee! I guess they finally got enough complaints from other users
and decided that it wasn't fair or something. They told me that they were
going to have some big tele-conference with kenwood in about a 1/2 hour and
that I could call him when I got back home to verify that they were not going
to charge me a restocking fee on the unit. I called when I got back home and
verified that they were *not* going to charge me a restocking fee. I was
overjoyed, to say the least.

I went and bought a Yaesu 5200 and am quite happy with it. The 742A would
have been a great rig if it had worked. For $1100 a unit had damn well better
perform flawlessly! Radio City told me that Kenwood was sending out ICs to
their distributors as a sort of maintenance upgrade. I'd be very interested
to hear what problems this is supposed to cure and what problems it actually
*does* cure.

My advice: ditch the 742A, and if you must buy Kenwood get a 741. If not,
check out the Yaesu 5100 and 5200. I know of several people who have them and
I don't hear them bitchin'. :)
