Subject: converter for shortwave band?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

I have a Kenwood R-599D ham-band HF receiver that I'm very happy with,
except that I would like to be able to receive shortwave broadcast
frequencies as well as ham bands. Does anyone know of a company that
makes a converter to give general coverage (something like 3 to 30 MHz)
to a ham-band-only receiver?

Help! I recently bought an Alinco DJ-560T, and have discovered the
wonderful world of uninformative, unintelligible radio manuals. I have
two questions; one, what is he pinout fir the speaker/mic on the top of
the radio (so I can interface a TNC) and second, I heard rumors that this
radio was crossband-repeat capable. Help!

Dave:

Our Ham club owns a TS-440S and I really love it. It is easy to use, works
well, and has some good features. I am about 3 months new to HF, so can't
give you a complete rundown, and we do use an external antenna tuner to a
triband beam and a folded dipole. I am leaning towards the TS-450SAT
though, since I would like to have the included computer interfaces and use
HAMWindows. A posting last week listed actual transactions for HF rigs,
and I will add the Kenwood portion of that list at the end of this mssg.
The package price sounds just a little high to me, depending upon the
options installed in the radio for filters, etc. Again, I am not the
expert, but just my opinion.

I don't know if my last post went out when I put distribution as NA.
Does this not mean North America?

I quote the following equipment in Canadian dollars. Of course, I will

A fellow ham-firefighter mentioned hearing that some of the newer 2m
HTs from folks like Icom might be FCC type accepted for use in the
commercial/public safety bands.

It sounds like wishful thinking to me (I wish too!). Is anyone aware
of an HT sold to the ham market (ie front-panel programmable, VFO,
normal ham bells and whistles) and that meets certification for nonham
use such as FCC part 22, 74, 80, or 90?

thanks,

With the number of radios on the market that can be easily modified
to transmit "out of band", there are more and more folks using
one radio for both ham and <insert other radio service here>.
   [Crystal ball = ON]
Its probably just a matter of time that this starts to cause real
problems. Frequency abuse will start to occur when these radios
fall into the wrong hands. "Hey, I can use any d*m* frequency I
want!" Expect this to cause the FCC to clamp down on the manufacture
or import of radios with out-of-band capability.

Remember, you heard it here first.
