To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu HI. I recently purchased an IC-725 and to use it in the mobile, I would like to build a small controller device to remotely control the rig, which would be installed in the boot of the car. This device would control the rig via the RS232 interface. Questions : The device needed which plugs into the ICOM rigs to convert it's communications protocol to RS-232 (I can't remember what it's called) - a) How much does it cost ? b) Is it possible to build this device yourself ? c) Are any software libraries available to control the rig over the RS- 232 ? Do you know of anybody who has done something similar. Maybe you saw something like this in a magazine ? Thanks for any information that you may have for me. 73's KEITH ZS6TW Potch Univ. To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu I own a Kenwood TS440 and am generally happy with the radio but wonder why there is no power out control. The only thing I really set upon transmit is the ALC control. Is this radio always at maximum power out? Do most HF rigs have a power out control? One is from Buffalo and 50,000 watts the other is from a town outside of Amherst, MA, not sure how strong the signal is, which is where I am. At night and up until sunrise the station from Buffalo overpowers the other station. So, my question is, if I buy a AM signal enhancer will it: 1. Make the Buffalo station overpower the other 24 hours a day OR 2. Just make the station closer to me stronger Please e-mail me your ansewer Thanks Joshua Rice Internet Address jjr@student.umass.edu ------------------------------ Date: 3 Nov 93 05:43:06 GMT From: ogicse!uwm.edu!spool.mu.edu!umn.edu!csus.edu!netcom.com!consult@network.ucsd.edu Subject: Yaesu vs. Kenwood HT info wanted To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu In rec.radio.amateur.equipment you write: >I am considering the purchase of either the Yaesu FT-530 or the >Kenwood TH-78A. The local dealer had a stand-up sign from Yaesu that showed some of it's advantages over several competing units. Unfortunately, it wasn't available on paper. Right now I'm leaning towards the Yaesu for the following reasons: $100 cheaper, $25 rebate currently, more channels, reduces output power to minimum automatically to save batter power. >I'd like a compare/contrast between these two units. I own an FT-530 and I think it is a good buy for someone looking for a new HT. The standard rubber doesn't work that great on 2M but it seems to work well on 70cm. As far as intermod is concerned, I live not too far from a big pager antenna farm and the 530 does very well with intermod. Battery life is very good with the xmit save and the rx save, I just use the wall charger and the HT lasts for hours depending on how much you use it of course, so that might vary with your use. Also one of the great features I think is how easy it programs compared to the Kenwood. I t seems the Kenwood has very few buttons and each button has 2 or 3 functions each which can get a little bit confusing. Hope I was of some help in making your decision.
