Here's a koan: If you have ice-cream I will give you some. If you have none,

Bill, there are plenty of calibration labs about that can calibrate your DVM (s) for you to a national (NIST) standard price should run at about $40 a shot. The manufacturer should be able to help you too, but often they are pricier. Send your most accurate unit (according to the manufacturers spec's). Then just cal the others to that ones readings.

I am considering buying the above equipment second hand, along with a GAP DX-VI and Butternut HF-6VX antennas, power supply for the HF rig, and some assorted bits and pieces. Both radios are about 4 years old.
Could anyone who has or currently owns either radio give me an opinion on them. The asking price is $1400 for the package.
Thanks in advance...

The only thing that comes to mind (and you've probably already tried this,
though you don't say) is to proceed back from the driver stage. I think
the HW-101 is basically the same as the SB-401, and all the other Heath
tube type xmtrs, but I don't know. Any low level, the mixers on, could
cause the problem. If you have access to all the tubes, you can try
substitution, one at at time. Otherwise, try signal tracing from the
driver back. I know this doesn't help much, but it's the way I would
do it.

Subject: Standard Radio Repair Experience
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu

Last Sunday at a public service event, I noticed that my Standard C558A
portable was having intermitent receive (and transmit) problems. In
addition, I noticed that the antenna connector was loose. The BNC was a
flanged connector, with two tiny screws fastening it to the rear half of
the metal case. Tightening the screws had no effect. Upon further
inspection, I discovered that the case was broken around the connector and
that the center conductor was disconnected from the BNC. I could solder
the connector back, but part of the case was broken and there was no way to
securely mount it. Checking the warranty, I found that it was one year.
Checking my receipt, I found that I had owned the radio about three weeks
longer than one year. I called Standard Radio to get return authorization
and the mailing address. On Monday afternoon, I mailed the radio out 2nd
day. On Thursday evening (the repair shop has evening hours), I called to
find out the expected bad new$, only to find out that the radio had already
been repaired and sent back to me, no charge! I received the radio back in
less than one week, better than new. I say better than new because if
there are any 558 owners out there, they know that the battery does not fit
onto the radio very securely. With the new rear case, both my OEM battery
and my aftermarket battery fit securely. I am very pleased with the
service that I received from Standard and wanted to share it with the net.
We often hear of bad service stories and I wanted to relate a good one for
a change.
