I dropped my HT on the ON-OFF/volume control knob.
The knob is now loose and the HT will not turn on without
being forced to the side. One on everything seems to work.
The question is - how difficult is going into this HT?
Are there spring loaded items which when I open it will
pop which are impossible to put back??
The only thing I found to be careful with is that you don't allow the
keys in the keyboard to fall out -- they are a pain to figure out which
went where :-)
Seriously though, these units, while compact, are not difficult to
dis/re-assemble.

I got my Kenwood TH78A about 2 months ago and really like it. I'm new at
thiham stuff and therefore don't have any experience with any other models.
I have had no problems with this unit at all. Intermod is pretty bad in some
areas of the city, though. Those with other models have the same kind of
interference, too, although they say the Radio Shack 2m radio is better than
any of the dual-banders. I am really happy to have the radio and wish you
the best with whatever you get. Oh yeah, you asked about the knobs... I have
seen no problems there. They seem to be holding up just fine and I am always
fiddling with them.

I have an old Hy-Gain 2 Meter Handheld radio for sale ... you know the
kind ... the one that uses those dreaded crystals :-)
Anyway, it's a six channel unit ... but I only have one pair of crystals
for it (146.52 simplex). Uses 8 AA's but has a 12V in jack as well as an
earphone jack. Some enterprising amateur could easily get into
this box and make it into a cheap packet xcvr.
Works fine ... I just got back from our lab where a fellow coworker tested
it with his handheld.
Also can be used as a club in case of emergency :-) Dimensions are
8.5"x3"x1.75" (HWD).
Best offer takes it!

Subject: Problems with Kenwood TM-742A

I purchased a Kenwood TM-742A a couple weeks ago. I have noticed some
quirks with the unit and would like to hear from other 742A owners about their
experiences with this rig. Here are my experiences:
==> Initially, I had the 6M band unit installed as the third band. After the
first 3 hours of use, I went into DTSS mode on the 440 band. The unit froze
up and appeared to turn itself off. I pushed the power button, went into the
440 band, and pushed DTSS again; same thing happened. I had no problems
getting this to work on the 2M band. After repeating this 7-10 times the unit
finally got into a mode where it would turn on (show "-on-" on the display)
and then turn back off rather than display the three bands. I took the unit
back to the store that I purchased it from and swapped it for a new radio. I
installed the same 6M band unit an had the same problems. After removing the
6M unit DTSS worked fine on both bands, so I'm returning the 6M unit to
Kenwood.
==> I'm usually scanning on both bands when mobile. I have noticed that the
unit will beep and stop scanning on the 2M side, seemingly at random. Even if
I have set the control mode to the 440 side, the 2M side is always the side
that will stop scanning. Most puzzling.
==> I have had problems with certain squelch modes. I started by using the
"default" squelch mode (not Microprocessor or S-Meter control) and had
problems with the squelch suddenly breaking. I would end up turning the
squelch all the way up, yet the squelch would still be broken! *BUT* if I
turned the radio off and then back on I would have to turn the squelch all the
way back down to its previous position to find the threshold. I have
experienced this problem several times. I started using S-meter squelch and
have had no problems. Yesterday, I enabled Microprocessor squelch control. I
found that I had to keep resetting the squelch control a lot so far. I'll
probably go back to S-meter squelch eventually.
Those are the major gripes (so far). Anyone know of a mod to speed up the
scan rate? 2 ch/sec is too darn slow!

I'm a little hesitant at this point because of the problems you're having.
Please post (or mail to me) any information you get from Kenwood about these
problems.
If these "problems" turn out to be "restrictions" I won't be happy with paying
the $1100+ for them...

I am trying to find out how the old BC-35 ICOM rapid desk chargers (for the
large old style batteries) charges the batteries. It it constant current
until shutoff? Is it pulsed? How does it decide when to stop?
Ultimately, I would like to know how hard on the batteries the charger is.
If it is in general bad for nicads, I would like to know of plans for smart
chargers so that I can retrofit the charger with new electronics.
I have already tried to make the rapid charging a switch operated option but
I have a bug in my revised circuit diagram.

Does anyone know the mic plug witing scheme for the Kenwood
TM-732A? It uses that modular Kenwood plug. I am trying to hook it up to
an autopatch. I have the cable but I don't want to play with it because
the first time I did that it went into this "protective" mode. Now, I am
an electrical engineer so I was careful, but has anyone experienced this:
The radio will not transmit at all, on either band, although
it indicates that it is transmitting on the display. It will not make
a sound. There is no audio out- not even a beep. It will not register
incoming signals at all. Other then that, the display and functions
work perfectly.
Obviously, due to my poking, it has gone into some kind
of protective mode- maybe I've blown an internal fuse?
I tried all resets and the usual. I know how to op. the
radio so I'm not missing something. Obviously, this is not a problem
where I've broken something major as it is only 2 days old- it is in
some mode and I can't get it out.
Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone have any ideas about
this type of "partial involuntary shutdown?"
Insight would be appreciated!!!

Well ther may be a small problem ... the Kenwood mikes have the capability
to lock or unlock. There also may be a repeater mode in the radio in which
case, the microphone capabilities are bipassed. Check the manual.

Apparently Alinco made production changes on units shipped after about
April of this year. I bought mine in June and had no intermod problems
until earlier this week. I was in downtown Atlanta and experienced some
slight intermod problems but not nearly as bad as owners of the earlier
radios described. The 'fix' can be done by Alinco - they have not given
out any specific info on it. One person got back a note that said that
they replaced R419 and R472 and performed a 'general check'. I suspect that
if yours is still in warantee that they'll do it for free. They may even do
it for free ouside of warantee...
With current technology it is difficult to make an HT which is compact,
cheap and intermod free. I have heard that the Standard 558 is as intermod
free as possible given the cost, size and technology constraints - and they
are a little pricey. I suspect that if users would tolerate radios slightly
larger or more expensive, then the manufacturers could seriously attack the
problem...
