Lin P.O.Box 536 Tel:310-9263682 | : | Artesia, CA 90702 Fax:310-9269526 | : | U.S.A. | John - You will need a 9600 baud modem that works with the TNC in question. I am using an MFJ 1270B + 9600, I have friends who are using the MFJ 1278+9600, and the Kantronics DataEngine+appropriate K modem. There are others on the market also. Most radios will work. The controlling factor is that the radio must use real FM (not phase mod with pre-emphasis). You will have to modify the radio to introduce the modulation right onto the modulator (usually a varactor diode) and pick the received signal directly from the detector (bypassing de-emphasis, squelch, audio amps etc.) There are quite a few radios that will work. The Icom 290 and 271 are among them. One detail I have not seen mentioned anywhere is that the radios (tx+rx) must be within 500Hz or so or 9600 won't work. Using a multimode radio is nice because you can usually tune in 1KHz steps. If you're stuck with 5KHz steps and your radio is 1.5KHz (or more) off frequency, it will work fine for normal FM/rpt amnd even 1200 baud packet but will bw a dismal failure on 9600 - worse, if you don't know it's off freq, you'll wonder what's wrong! 70 miles? Sure - depends more on the antennas in use and the terrain than anything else. Note that 9600 is somewhat more susecptable to multipath distortion than voice or 1200 baud FM/FSK. WEFAX on Soundblaster card ? To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu I just read the latest issue of 73 mag. It features WEFAX as a fun-to-copy mode. Looks great, but the prices of the receiving modems are outrageous ($600!). I flipped on my Radio Shack Scanner and at 3:47a.m. it started beeping away (XYL not too pleased :-) as one of the "birds" passed over Chicago. It looks like the Soundblaster (or clone of SB) would be a NATURAL receiving board for the WEFAX sigs. What do you think ? has it been done yet ? John Langner, WB2OSZ, author of the Pasokon SSTV board was contemplating WEFAX as an add-on, but with the advent of affordable DSP cards maybe this the SB is a better idea ? dah-dit-dah, ___________ Ken Hopper, November 9 Vivid Video | ___ | HF biggot - PacTOR,RTTY,SSTV,CW |o o \_/ o o| |o o @ o o| khopper@midway.uchicago.edu |___________| ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Feb 1994 19:24:49 GMT From: lll-winken.llnl.gov!overload.lbl.gov!agate!howland.reston.ans.net!vixen.cso.uiuc.edu!sdd.hp.com!col.hp.com!news.dtc.hp.com!hplextra!hpcss01!markb@seismo.css.gov Subject: EMail between the Internet & Packet To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu Yes, I am using N0ARY-1 here in california, send him an internet Email message and get set up on his machine(s), SUN SPARK II, quite a setup. try sending to root@bbs.arasmith.com his gateway this week has been having some trouble.
