To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu I have used 1.2, 1.4e, and 1.5. The latest release is quite better. I had numerous lockups with 1.4, and was really annoyed with it. BTW, the program called GP can run on a Baycom modem. You may want to give it a try also. -- *-----------------------------------------------------------* * Pat Masterson D12-25 | KE2LJ@KC2FD * * Grumman Data Systems | 516-346-6316. * * Bethpage, NY 11746 | bat@gdstech.grumman.com * ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1993 02:51:58 GMT From: psinntp!gdstech!gdstech!bat@uunet.uu.net Subject: Beginner in packet To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu If you are just going to LISTEN to packet stuff, a Baycomm or Poor Man's Packet is the cheapest way to go. The Hayes modem that you have is not able to decode packet, you need a packet modem, called a TNC. This will plug into one of your com ports, and you tell the software which port to read by setting the port number in the config file. And, you run audio from your receiver's audio jack thru the cable to the TNC, where it gets decoded, and sent into the com port. The software (in this instance) recontructs the packets, and displays them on your screen. Many of the more expensive TNCs do the decoding in their own firmware, and send plain ascii to the computer. In this case you can use any com software to read them (like procomm). -- *-----------------------------------------------------------* * Pat Masterson D12-25 | KE2LJ@KC2FD * * Grumman Data Systems | 516-346-6316. * * Bethpage, NY 11746 | bat@gdstech.grumman.com * ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Nov 1993 06:53:11 GMT From: sdd.hp.com!math.ohio-state.edu!howland.reston.ans.net!vixen.cso.uiuc.edu!moe.ksu.ksu.edu!crcnis1.unl.edu!news.unomaha.edu!cwis.unomaha.edu!ncc2001@network.ucsd.edu Subject: CoCo2 for packet To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu 73 de N0YBC Michael -- | Michael Fortner N0YBC | Where are we going? | | Internet: ncc2001@cwis.unomaha.edu | PLANET 10! | | Packet: N0YBC@WB0BLR.#SWIA.IA.USA.NA | When? | | | REAL SOON! | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1993 02:25:35 GMT From: noc.near.net!lynx!chaos.dac!wy1z@uunet.uu.net Subject: Internet to Packet gateway? To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu Using a directional antenna on packet will give you a better connection to your remote station, but may very well screw up the frequency for everyone else. You are creating a "hidden transmitter" because staions off to your sides wont be able to hear you transmit. And, they will probably transmit at the same time you do, creating a collision in which nobody wins, and lots of packets have to be resent. The best thing for you to do, is make yourself be heard by EVERYONE on the frequency, where practical. Do this by using a high (25 feet or better), omnidirectional antenna. And, at least 20 watts (no HT's). Too may people live only a few miles away from their PBBS and can connect on 1 watt with a ducky. But noone else can hear them, and throughput degrades remarkably for evryone on the frequency. So, be thoughtful of all the other people out there, we have to share with everbody. -- *-----------------------------------------------------------* * Pat Masterson D12-25 | KE2LJ@KC2FD * * Grumman Data Systems | 516-346-6316. * * Bethpage, NY 11746 | bat@gdstech.grumman.com * ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Nov 93 19:03:51 EST From: library.ucla.edu!europa.eng.gtefsd.com!howland.reston.ans.net!noc.near.net!news.delphi.com!usenet@network.ucsd.edu Subject: PK-88 KISS/NOS HELP!!! To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu I am trying to set up nos (the dos version was ftp from Baltimore Area users) and the k5jb version is running in unix (ATT 3.2 on a 3B2/400). Both versions will activate the PK-88 TNC transmitter and the trace mode leaves the impression that the X-mit data is ok. The local node will even respond with a connect ack. On occasion (dos version only) I get a connect but he performance is terrible. Can't get a connect via unix. I have noticed in the KISS $01 mode the CON light blinks intermittently when the DCD light is on. Some of the questions in this section seem to apply and I was wondering if anyone else is running nos on a pk-88 and do I perhaps not have a parameter set properly or need a firmware upgrade. Direct ax25 via terminal to tnc seems fine. Any suggestions appreciated, I'm desperate!!!!! NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS ----------------- TRANSMITTED BY ZL1AMW -------------- -------------------- H A M I L T O N ----------------- 07 November 1993 This is a weekly unofficial bulletin of news and views from ZL amateurs. It does not represent any official viewpoint, and all opinions are those of the contributor. News Transmission ----------------- From ZL1AMW As mentioned in last weeks news, the Sunday broadcast has been shifted to 40 metres, on 7045KHz, in place of 80 metres. At the same time the ZL1AMW SELCAL has also been moved to 40 metres, and to date (after 2 days) the reports seem to support the shift. I look forward to receiving reports of better signals as summer proceeds. - de ZL1AMW New Items --------- from ZL1AMW This sheet has survived continuously for many years (since 1984 in fact) by receiving interesting and varied items from a broad range of amateur operators. This week, as has happened on a thankfully small number of occasions, no news items have been received at all... so we will definitely have a brief newsletter today! Maybe the lead-up to the elections has been so gripping we have not had time for our hobby? If you have any item that could be of interest to the amateur community, drop it to me by SELCAL, packet (`ZL1UX) or post. Selcal News Pages ----------------- from ZL1AMW As noted last week, I have restored the 'news page' facility, where items from this newsletter are extracted each week, and form the contents to the replies to the PAGE command on the ZL1AMW RTTY SELCAL. This has increased the number of users accessing, and seems to be providing a useful service to callers. STOP PRESS STOP PRESS --------------------- From ZL1AMW Reports received after the 9:30am broadcast indicate good signals in the South Island, and very poor, or non-existent signals in Auckland and Tauranga. 40 metre signals improved significantly about 1 hour later for North Island stations. Any more reports? That concludes the Data News for this week, this sheet is Prepared at the shack of ZL1AMW from contributions sent by post, RTTY and packet. Text is also obtained from packet BBS stations, and Selcals on 7045/3545khz. This news is transmitted weekly on Sunday mornings at 0930hrs (local) and repeated at 1900hrs. Both transmissions are on 3545khz. It is first sent in Baudot at 75 baud, then repeated in AMTOR mode B (FEC) on both occasions. 73 to all from Alan, ZL1AMW, 20 Lorne St., Hamilton. ========== End of message #13161 ========== -- carl@codewks.nacjack.gen.nz (Carl Trommel) The BBS Works -- +64 9 630 7739 NZL New Zealand's Oldest Laptop Driven BBS ------------------------------ End of Ham-Digital Digest V93 #109 ****************************** ******************************
